For some people, it's not one of those 'duh' things. One of my friends wants to be popular. She knows she's not perfect and will openly admit to it, but she wants to be. She tries to drag her un-popular friends (me) along with her, and trys to make them something they're not. She'll try to convince me to go to the mall or something with her and I'll flat out refuse. She refuses to give up for a few days. Other times, when I actually want to be part of her conversation, she blows me off and says "You wouldn't want to know, Kit Kat."

I completly agree with all that you wrote, though. It's sad how often people that love wearing jeans get looked down upon because of it. I mean, contrary to the popular people's belief, there are those of us who wear what feels comfortable and would rather spend time online than going to a football game, because they don't feel comfortable with the people that go to them.

Since I'm not exactly sure how to critique a non-fiction piece and I already gave you my opinion, I'm going to point out a few grammar errors:

Isn’t it true that people will do anything to be emotionally unstable, have no true friends, and oh yeah, have everyone you trusted stab you in the back.

You kind of controdict yourself here. Don't popular people want to just have friends, not caring if they're true or not? Popular people, I think, like to trick themselves into thinking that they are emotionally stable and don't care who they hurt in their quest for power. Maybe you should reword this sentence?

Power is like a symbol to them. It’s a symbol saying “I control you.”

Anyway, I liked the article, and I don't blame you at all for letting off steam; it gets to me every once in a while too.

Yeah I know, friends are always dragging me over the boundary to the popularity line and I always refuse. I hate it when people try to change themselves to fit in. It's really sad.

You do have a point there. It's sad how people often call the loudest, the prettiest, the thinnest, and the most wanted girls popular, even though some of them are more of cold and cruel. I consider people popular when they are friendly to others and people want to be their friends because they're so nice, not because they're good-looking. You know how the stereotyped "bad girls" are in some people's opinions "popular"? (Like Kirsty Brightman? ) I know myself a couple of these "popular" girls, and I always thought it was so pitiful when some very kind, but unfortunately also unsure, girls wanted to be like them.

However, I wasn't so sure about one thing: was this piece about these not-sure-of-themselves girls who want to be "popular", or the "popular" girls who aren't so cool after all? I take it's the first one?

I'm sorry, I'm a little tired, so my words may seem somehow weird. Hopefully that doesn't disturb you

This is the most bitter, hateful piece I've read here. Really, it's quite awful.

well anyway, i kinda agree with his main and basic, underlying thought about the piece, it's pretty typical and it's called school politics, humans generally want to be good in something, and acceptance, it's just an insecurity, or something they think their lacking, or whatever.

anyway, if that friend thinks your not popular and tries to make you someone you're not, then why hang out with her?

so back to the point, it's something that's been going on for centuries already and there's already tons of pieces and media out there that's about this. it's something you have to live with and get over.

oh, suggestion: you can try satire. mock the childishness.

Around for centuries, this, yeah - Would think that we'd have come up with a method of raising our kids out of it by now, but nooo... Ah well.

No new points there, it's all been pretty much said elsewhere a million times. Good to say it again though! It's just too bad the 'cool kids' tend not to take the time to indulge in 'nerdy' activities such as reading. They might learn something about life.

You do seem a bit bitter though, angry even (Like someone pointed out up there in a rather upfront manner...) I honestly don't mind, since your arguments seem pretty much sound to me still, a little bit of emotion put into the text works wonders. It'd get dry otherwise, I think.

You're going for a bit extreme words and views here, aren'tcha? I doubt many teenagers fit your view of the 'popular kid'. True, there are some really nasty people out there who honestly aren't worth anyone's time, but most people are just a bit insecure, go along with the flow due to peer pressure, don't understand the consequences of their actions (How much a single word can hurt!)... And so forth.

Now I'm not saying it's right, what would be right is to have the strength of will or the perception to break out from the wrong (harming others), but remember that most people aren't monsters, and have quite humane reasons for being who they are - And I'm pretty sure that most feel bad about what's happening to the underdog, it's just that everyone thinks everyone else accepts it... And strength of will required to intervene is hard to come by in a teen environment, where everyone tends to be at least a little bit insecure.

I have faith in that, anyway. I hope I'm right.

Oh, and about that beaten track of yours - You could look at the other side here again, consider that the 'cool kids' won't have it easy either, especially in the years to come. Coping with inner insecurity plus the endless drive to be on top, along with possible consequences for the cool things they try, like smoking and excessive drinking... It's a bit nasty to think, but doesn't it bring a sort of morbid satisfaction?

It's their choice. In most cases, the 'cool people' tend to become uninteresting, mainstream with mainstream views. Those who dare to be different bring change, hopefully for the better.

Woah, this ended up kinda long. Anyway, keep ranting, and regards from someone who has been pushed around by the coolios for years in the past!

PS. A little thought regarding Parisanmilo's view: Why should we just 'deal with' (ignore) behavior that's proven to be very unhealthy for everyone involved plenty of times, regardless of how long it's been around?

I thought it did sound a little like the stuff I write when I've got the temptation to blow somebody off. And the thing is, it always works: glad you wrote it. It gives those of us who have felt like you a sense of understanding. Check the piece for typos-I spotted a few misused words and stuff. Growing should be throwing, and there were a few others like that.
Still conveyed the message very well. keep writing!

I thought it was a nice piece also. I've never tried to be popular. In fact my mom once told me 'Cassidy if you're going to lower yourself just to make somebody like you,don't because by the time you lower yourself to their standards it won't be worth it'. Sometimes I would've loved to be 'popular' whatever popular may be. I'm popular with the crowd of people I may hang out with. In some years that would be the 'oddball' group. I mean we were not really odd it was just that people looked at us as odd. Anyway its a good piece.

this is truly bitter and meaningless. i agree with your point, which is that people should be free-thinking individuals. but by attacking them like this, you're just playing their game. live and let live. that's how i live my life, and it's worked out pretty well for me. don't let their behavior get to you. put yourself above that.
