Maelstrom

Deep within me lives a demon
Seen within my shallow face;
Waiting for my guard to drop
she surges forth, steals a base.

Deadly to say the least,
Painful to say the most,
Always greedy, scheming-
Not a second lost.

Unable to trust myself-
My own worst enemy-
Life falls to pieces,
Two strikes become three.

Flames consume the wreckage,
Maelstrom in my mind,
I'm losing my mind.
Hope is lost, home is lost.
Problems are like mould; if not stopped, they grow and spread until even the air is filled with the poison of their spores.

Hi! I think there is one main point you could consider to improve this poem, and that's having a more consistent structure. If you made sure each line had eight syllables, for example, or if the number of syllables in the lines of each stanza went 8-6-8-6, then you would have a spot-on rhythm. You don't even need to change too much about the poem as it is. If you go for eight syllables in each line, you could have:

Deep within me lives a demon,
Seen within my shallow face; - You can get away with 7 syllables here, but you could think of an alternative to repeating 'within'.
Waiting for my guard to drop,
she surges forth and steals a base.

Or if you go 8-6-8-6, then:

She is painful to say the least,
Deadly to say the most,
Always greedy, always scheming-
Not a second lost. - You can get away with 5 here.

I'm unable to trust myself -
My own worst enemy.
My life falls into pieces and
Two strikes turn into three.

My suggestions aren't great but if you read it aloud then you'll hear yourself the lines that stutter a little because they're too short.

Did you break the rhyming at the end to reflect how the speaker is losing her mind? I'm not sure how effective it was - it might work better just to continue rhyming:

Flames consume the wreckage,
There's a maelstrom in my mind,
Hope is lost, home is lost,
Impossible to find.

Again, not a brilliant suggestion. But that's just an idea - you might want to keep the break from rhyming.

Aside from those points, I liked the personification in the first and second stanzas and I didn't feel like the rhyming was forced at all.

Hope some of these comments help you out!
