Author's Note: Oh. My God.
The cloying, suffocating femininity. O_O
It was tough to write this one, since it's inherently so feminine and girly... and I'm uncomfortable with that. But I'm proud of myself for sticking it out anyway, and it's probably going to be the worst of the set, haha. But I faced the challenge, and I am happy for it. ^^
This is entry #2 for Cal's Some Kind of Character contest. Again, numbers at the beginning are [in order] word number in table, photograph number, and prompt word.
[012-18: Peak]
Miranda skipped through the grass, humming a jaunty tune to herself. The ground beneath her feet began to transform, turning upwards and shedding its grassy covering. Trailer homes melded into the ground, or sprouted branches and leaves in a thousand different colours, and some turned into sleeping dragons, tendrils of smoke leaking from their nostrils. Blue sky gave way to pink, a rainbow sprouting in the distance.
Miranda smiled, feeling her clothes change from secondhand jeans to an elegant dress fit for a princess. She giggled as a butterfly landed on her nose. She was home.
A brilliant white unicorn emerged from behind one of the sleeping dragons. It knelt, and Miranda clambered onto its back, burying her hands in its mane and holding on tight. The unicorn broke into a gallop, and Miranda’s laughter grew from a giggle to a full-blown laughter, ringing out like music across her fantasy kingdom of trailer park dragons and magical unicorns.
As if it knew where she wanted to go, the unicorn galloped up the sloping hillside, Miranda clinging onto its neck. At the peak, the unicorn knelt again, and Miranda slid off. She took a sugar cube from within the confines of her dress and fed it to her steed. Miranda turned around, and walked to the edge of the mountain, gazing out over her kingdom. The wildlife paused to look at their ruler in reverence.
Miranda smiled, opening her arms to her domain. She was free, finally free, away from home and money and all the sad things. Nothing went wrong in her world. Every living thing was happy.
She heard her mother calling her name. She blinked, and the vast meadowed valley disappeared. The mountain peak shrunk, and she found herself standing atop a rusted, useless car. The dragons and trees turned back into trailer homes. Her face fell. Her enchanted world was gone.
She turned around and jumped off the car, head down. She took a few steps, and froze when her head was forcibly lifted by something moist.
The unicorn neighed, and Miranda smiled.
She skipped home, her trusty steed watching her shrink into the distance.
