[056-11: Pig]
5 years old
Lemon squealed with delight as the sun peaked over the crops. As if the rays from the morning star were calling to them, the horses neighed and whinnied against the wind. With her worn pink bunny slippers on, Lemon jumped down off of her bed and made her way to the kitchen. The house wasn't big. It was just an old silver rectangle on wheels. Sometimes, when she couldn't find anything else to do, Lemon would pretend that the trailer was a submarine sailing the big blue seas. Lemon took a seat in one of the chairs adjacent from the radio and listened for a moment. Her mom, who had alcohol pouring from her lips, was breathing in the smoke from her wilted cigarette.
"Lemon you hungry?" she asked, coughing.
"Yes ma'am," Lemon nodded, smiling.
Lemon, who was feeling grown up already, got down from her chair and waltzed over to the sink. She grew about two inches in the past couple of months, so she was able to reach the rusty faucet without standing on her tippy-toes. All night she lye awake thinking about what she was going to wish for when she blew out the candles on her cake.
"Five candles " she had said," means five wishes."
Seeing as though her teacher, Miss Candy, helped her with her ABC's, Lemon was able to write and memorize her five wishes. Her first wish was that she'd get to meet a fairy because she always wanted to know one. The second wish was that she'd get to go meet her daddy because her mother told her she had one. Lemon's last three wishes consisted of an endless supply of cotton candy, riding a horse, and helping her mommy get better.
Amongst all the rattling Lemon's mother was making, she could hear the smooth voice of the singer. Lemon didn't know how to say the words but she liked humming along to the simple melody. A sigh broke the harmony, making Lemon look over at her mother. In her hands she held a blue can with strange letters on them. Once Lemon asked her mother what she used the can for and she said: It's so that I can go to my happy place. This was a surprise to Lemon because usually when her mommy had the can she wasn't happy. She'd forget to do things that she was supposed to do and sometimes if she was really into her happy place, she'd hit Lemon really hard. Miss Candy asked Lemon why she have that red spot on her face and all Lemon could say was: Cuz mommy was in her happy place. Ever since then, Miss Candy made it a ritual to keep Lemon over at her house. And Lemon never minded much to tell you the truth, especially since she got cookies and a tall glass of 'lemon.' Because Lemon liked lemonade so much, she nick-named her Lemon but her real name was Kristy-Ann.
"Look, sweety, mommy's in her happy place, so go on over to Miz Candy's and I'll come get you later," mom said, tiredly.
Before Lemon could protest, her mom grabbed her by the arm and pulled her to the door. Setting her can on the steps, Lemon's mother thrust open the door and pushed Lemon out into the day. Still in her pink bunny slippers and her flower pajamas, Lemon took one last look at the silver rectangle and took off down the grassy road towards Miss Candy's house at the end of the road.
"Happy Birthday, Lemon!" Ms. Candy exclaimed when she opened the door. Lemon didn't have to wait long for Ms. Candy to let her in, usually she was waiting for her.
Inside Miss Candy's trailer it was bright and colorful. Since it reminded Lemon of a bag full of candy, she deemed Miss Sarah Sharpe, Miz Candy. There was a pink couch across from the door and it had red and orange pillows on it. In the kitchen, everything was either yellow or different shades of green. The first thing Lemon noticed when she came farther into the house, was the plate of chocolate chip cookies on the table.
"I made a batch just for you," Miss Candy explained, pouring a glass of lemonade for Lemon.
"Thank you, Miz Candy," Lemon said, smiling.
"Nick! Lemon's here!" Miss Candy called, handing Lemon the glass of lemonade.
Lemon heard quick footsteps marching down the hall and soon the door dividing the bedroom from the kitchen and the living room, flew open. Standing, all dressed up in his khaki shorts and plaid shirt, was Nicholas, Miss Candy's son. His dark brown curls fell gracefully around his cherub face which shined beneath his ocean eyes. Ever since Lemon could remember, Nick has always been her best friend. Without him, she couldn't play hide-and-go seek or play jump-in-puddles.
"Hi Nick," Lemon said, softly.
On her face she held a wide grin, especially since she was already thinking of the fun they were going to have later on.
"I have a gift for you," Nick said reaching behind the couch.
What Nick pulled out was taller than her and it was wrapped beautifully in yellow paper. Excepting the gift, Lemon said thank you and before she opened it, Nick and Miss Candy, sang happy birthday to her. Afterwards, Nick stuffed his face with ice cream while Lemon chowed down on her cookies and drank her fifth glass of lemonade.
"You gonna open your gift now Lemon?" Miss Candy asked, eagerly.
They were outside playing in the fields, when Lemon's mom had called for her. Before Lemon could go home, Miss Candy got her camera, the one that spits the picture out and told Lemon to open her gift. Lemon pulled off the wrapping paper and almost cried with joy when she saw what it was. In her hands she held her very own horse and it was perfect. The mane was blond and it was brown with a yellow stick coming out of its head. Lemon hugged her new friend against her tightly, closing her eyes as the sun shone against her face. There was a flash and then two arms wrapped around her.
"Happy Fifth Birthday, my sweet little Lemon," Miss Candy whispered.
"Thank you, Miss Candy," Lemon replied.
"Whatcha gonna name him?" Nick asked, petting the horse on his head.
Lemon thought for a second and then listened to the sounds around her. The horses stopped whinnying and now all she could hear was snorting. She laughed, knowing exactly what she was going to name her horse.
"His name is Pig," Lemon said, running back to her home.
