The Business of Hearts
The business of hearts
is not to sell them needlessly
on the market of romance
in the sour hope of a rally in the stock.
The business of hearts
is not to advertise
the owner’s unadulterated profligacy,
trading the product for morally bankrupt sin.
The business of hearts
is not to tax the consumer
with inflated promises
of health, wealth and happiness.
The true hawker of hearts
will bank on the soul
lingering in loveless poverty
as black as velvet;
they will find the one who deserves their heart
is the one who speculates on sheer good fortune.
