This is the story
of a young man, or boy
He grew up in a home
with a family, lacking joy

No one was mean or cruel
they treated him with care
but it was always work, work and work
no time, for games, to spare

His life drew on
businesslike and dull
but in his heart something grew
emotions wakened from preteen lull

Time and time again, he tried
to find a girl, free of sin
who could love him back as he loved her
who would flutter in his wind

As his quest continued
He failed without exception
and after a while
he simply lost conception

As the years passed by
he grew older and bitter
but deep inside his thirst
for love just wouldn't wither

It warped inside him
desire bent his mind
he began to resent this life
this love, he could not find

He frowned at lovers
He spat at hope
He built himself an inner wall
to escape, to envelope

Dismayed he hung his head
His wish for love, remained untold
So one night, he bid a hush farewell
and departed, into streets so cold

He wandered through his town
heedless of his step
his forehead in a frown
Grief within he kept

Away, away he went
Down to the dreary dock
in the air a rotten scent
on the ground, deserted stock

The mist was cold and wet
through distressing eyes he saw
a grand, grim silhouette,
A towering shape and gaping maw

Amazed, confused, astounded
he marvelled, high and low.
at the masts and hull and shipdeck too,
at the mermaid in it's bow.

Then down the plank came running
a man with captain's hat and rank
eying our lad from top to toe
He looked pleased, to be frank

"I need another sailor, boy"
Have you ever been to sea?
You look like a proper man, say
won't you come with me?"

Considering the offer
our sailor thought "why not?"
what binds me to this place?
Do I not detest this wretched lot?"

Family, friends and neighbours too.
all greed, deceit and plot.
Bound by their routine
and hardened by their lot.

Shaking hands and laughing
He enlisted on the ship
embarked unto peril nights
letting all held dear slip

He travelled the world
For many a year
desperately trying
to drown his thirst in cheer

Though deep inside
it lingered still
that searing longing
he couldn't kill

Off the coast of Bangkok
they encountered a typhoon
Our sailor thought ironically
"ain't this a boon."

through waves and thunder
The ship came crashing
Both wind and rain
and lightning flashing

The call went out
"all hands on deck!"
Every sailor to the fight
to keep the ship in check.

But standing at the gunwale
our sailor heeds a melody
painfully reminding him
Of a long lost memory

Something wakes within
wrenches away his wall
standing naked before the surge
of life, that is love's call

and that which was buried
long ago, in inner mire
is brought back again
strong, with raw desire

He hearkens to the Siren
Hears her solemn song
Fromout the depths she calls him home
Into the abyss, where he belong

He dives into the water
swims into the deep
reaches her in wet embrace
A soft caress, then blissful sleep

He sees no future
He fears no past
For within the darkened sea
He's found his bride, at last.

'Cause baby I´m a lazy thrillseeker, I hang at home watching horror movies while you're in the dark dropping smiley groovies.

Hello and Welcome to YWS!!

Your Worst At Its Best
Well my worst would be not saying that I did love this. (is that bad enough?) Ok, I must say that this is by far one of the most beautiful and technical poems I ever read. What I mean is, usually poems are short and to the point lacking a story but this was a nice length and it told a story. To make things even better the story followed through but it did take a few curves.

I Took A Shortcut And Ended Up In The Future

I love this poem, don't get me wrong but a few times I felt like things were going by too fast. Maybe its just me but I think another stanza should be added after the sea captain asks the MC if he wants to join his crew. This kind of decision is a big one no matter what the circumstances are...well that's just my thoughts.

Watch It!!

Considering the offer
our sailor thought "why not?"
what binds me to this place?
Do I not detest this wretched lot?

I'm known for having an eye for simple little mistakes which actually turn out to be huge. Here, you call our MC a sailor when he is not one...yet. Use another word-guy, man, boy, bloke, whatever...just not sailor ...it feels wrong.

Off the coast of Bangkok
they encountered a typhoon
Our sailor thought ironically
"ain't this a boon."

Your rhyming is eloquent and it easily flows but this is a little bit too random. I think this stanza really messes up the whole flow and beauty of this poem. Don't take it away...just fix it...but whatever you do burn this stanza and never think of it again. BEGONE O WRETCHED STANZA!

Putting The Sur In Real

Knowing a little about Sirens I know that they are not really angels more of sins if you take a look at the story of Odysseus. Our lovely MC spent his time looking for the one angel amongst the corrupted souls of some women only to fall off the wagon for this chick...that is the all time low! Really its beautiful and all to know that he has found his bride...but its just so surreal. You should add a stanza explaining why he would do such a thing. Why he would take a leap. Why he would forget what he believed in for this one woman who he didn't know from Eve.

When In Doubt You Gotta Be Unless
Thinking over my last section I think you can work this scenario with the Siren and all to your advantage. Sirens voices can make any man jump into the sea...looking back to the story of Odysseus...maybe you could make this Siren keep the MC as a prisoner thus he falls in love with her thus learning that we all have our personal flaws but we can love even that and more.

Beauty Makes The Picture Form
Your descriptions are brilliant. I felt like crying because the way you write is amazingly magical. My favorite stanzas are:

He frowned at lovers
He spat at hope
He built himself an inner wall
to escape, to envelope

I liked this stanza because this really bottles the MC's emotions up really nice and it tells the reader how much he gave up-in other words, to what extent did he fall.

Stop Look And Stare, That's My Philosophy

Some stanzas don't make sense sorry.

But standing at the gunwale
our sailor heeds a melody
painfully reminding him
Of a long lost memory

Something wakes within
wrenches away his wall
standing naked before the surge
of life, that is love's call

First of all, what lost memory? Now I find myself lost. You can either change this which I highly suggest or take it out which I also highly suggest. The rest of the lines are fine but then of a long lost memory messes it up.

Also, explain how this thing that wrenches away his wall is love's call? He hasn't experienced love so how can it call him. Fix...please!

No one was mean or cruel
they treated him with care
but it was always work, work and work
no time, for games, to spare

This is a great beginning but 'for games' really messes up the flow so scrap that and you're good to go.

Dismayed he hung his head
His wish for love, remained untold
So one night, he bid a hush farewell
and departed, into streets so cold

I love this stanza as well but the whole thing that turned me off was 'into streets so cold' Its like a freakin' fragment and it really needs to go and it needs to be fixed.
Endings Are For Genius's Unless They're Bad

This ending stanza was good so obviously you're a poetic genius. YAY!! Don't change it and if you do I will dress in all black and mourn the loss of such great words.

Speaking Of Words
You have a great vocabulary. I've never read any poems with words written in this way...but I like it.

Enough Of My Rambling, Bring Out The Test Results

And the winner is.....

You duh! I know that I completely complained throughout this whole critique but its for your own good. This was a great poem and with a little more work it can be even more beautiful. You have talent and you really should keep writing poetry in this same caliber.

Well I am Angel of Death (prefers Angel) and I have been your critiquer today. Good Job and Keep writing :D :D :D

P.S. Lovely Title.
True love, in all it’s celestial charm, and
star-crossed ways, only exist in a writer’s
mind, for humans have not yet learned
how to manifest it.
