Kyle moved quickly not bothering to slow his pace for his friends who walked along a yard or two behind him. As he walked, he switched the straps of his book bag from his left shoulder to his right. It was a smooth fluid movement—one he made often over the course of his day. If he was blessed to have the deltoids of a football player, he would make sure they were equally developed.
“Jesus, Kyle, slow down!” he heard one of his friends calling after him.
“If you can’t keep up, get lost!” Kyle yelled over his shoulder at whoever it was.
He scanned the hallway carefully. It was hard to find anyone in the over-crowded hallways of the school.
Where was she?
“Kyle wait!” a girl’s voice called after him.
He cast a glance over his shoulder. Lana was elbowing her way through his friends while giving one or two a spiteful look. Kyle knew for a fact that Lana hated most of his friends—‘the assholes’ she called them.
She caught up with him and started badgering him the way she had been doing all week, “Kyle, please do that line form the movie, pleeeeaaase?”
He glanced in annoyance at his friend, “I’m not going to do it. Stop asking.”
“Please. I promise I won’t laugh this time.”
“That’s what you said the last time. And the time before that.” God, why had he attempted that stupid imitation? He was just fooling around and Lana had acted like it was the most hilarious thing in the world. Now she wouldn’t shut up about it.
“That was the old me. I’ve changed since then.” Lana said.
Kyle frowned at her then checked the hallway one more time.
“Do it!” she demanded.
“Do what?” Saffron, Lana’s friend asked joining them.
Kyle looked over Saffron’s shoulder.
If two of her friends are here, why isn’t she? He asked himself.
“The line from the movie.” Lana told Saffron
“Hi!” Jenna said joining in.
“Kyle is going to do the line from the movie.” Saffron told Jenna.
He looked at them. They were trying his patience. He frowned, expertly making it seem like he was fed up of all the attention—then he saw her; Madeline. It was amazing. It didn’t matter how pissed off he was; the moment he saw her, everything just disappeared.
“What’s up?” Madeline asked linking her hand through Jenna’s.
“Kyle wants to do the line from the movie.” Saffron told her.
“No I don’t.” Kyle protested.
“Please do it?” Madeline said.
He looked at her while debating whether or not to do it. If he did it, she might think he was a complete retard, but then again, who would it hurt?
He sucked in his stomach, stuck out his chest and in a lady-like voice said; “Go call the po-po whore!”
Jenna, the expressionless one of them all, turned and whispered something Kyle couldn’t catch that made Saffron shriek. Madeline looked amused. Lana managed to keep her deadpan for about five seconds then let out a scream so loud it echoed clear across the hallway. It was a wonder she didn’t start rolling on the floor.
What is it with these girls? Kyle though as he walked off. Were they just relentlessly amused by every stupid thing that happened on the goddamn planet?
