Kingdom of Rain

Introduction:

There is a city located between the sea and the mountains, governed by a Royal Family for many centuries. As precipitation often occurs, the Royal Family hires scientists and magicians from all over the world in researching the chemistry of water. They were nicknamed "Rainmakers", because they were able to synthesize rain to produce various benefits.

The economic sectors of manufacturing and health and community services made full use of this technology. As a result, the city helps generate most of the country's capital.

All was well until the days when rain no longer fell onto the city.

Setting: A city of 4 million people.

Rules and important details:

The storybook takes place in a modern fantasy world. In this world, technology is dominant over magic, as magic in the world has been fading away for the last hundreds of years. As well as modern aspects (electricity, sky-scrappers, cars, cellphones, television, motorways etc), there are also fantasy aspects (mages, colonial era weapons, spells etc).

For example: The Queen's Royal Guard. They are the queen's bodyguard, donned in a clean suit, shades and uses guns. However, they also carry swords with them.

Another example: Though the city itself is modernized, the outskirts (where it is more rural) is more colonial era like, such as people riding carriages, people dressed in robes etc.

The focus of the story book is more on how characters would react and develop within their society and with the plot. The ongoing investigation by officials will move the plot forward and will help tell the narrative on the whole. There is a beginning, middle and end to this story book which we will discuss together. It would be really nice if we have people's contributions as to how we should move the plot forward. I really want this to develop into something much stronger.

People in this world are either magic users or mortals. Whether a person can use magic or not is determined by their DNA.

1. No God-Moding.

2. Do not make your character powerful or a mary-sue. Treat them like a real person.

3. Try to include other characters. This will allow for character relationships as well as character vs character conflicts.

4. For the character cast, you can't choose to be a member of the Royal Family.

5. Writing style: You may write in any style you like.

6. Please ensure proper spelling and grammar rules are applied in your posts.

7. As rain falls often onto the city, consider that in your descriptions and character interactions.

8. No killing off characters. You are allowed, however, to fight each other if needed.

9. All discussions related to this story book is to be done on the discussion thread.

Name: Alyssa Hadley

Nickname: Allie

Age: 21

Description of appearance: Alyssa is of average height with wavy, shoulder length, white-blonde hair and cornflower-blue eyes. Her body shape is curvy but at the same time athletic.

Fighting status: Medium to high. Alyssa is an experienced fighter and, though not the best, she is a challenging adversary. Alyssa favours her sword over her guns.

Magical status: Low to medium. Alyssa hasn't received any official lessons for her magic so she does not know how far her ability extends but at the moment, she can do a few simple things:

1. She can create a blue tinted, dome like shield that can withstand almost any collision when it is around just her. She also has the ability to extend it but for every few metres she extends it, it grows weaker and the largest she can make it is big enough to protect five people from minor to medium collisions.

2. She has a limited control over water, usually used to keep herself and fellow guards dry.

Character background: Alyssa grew up in a rural town just out of the city where she worked as a guard for her town but at the age of nineteen, she travelled to the city and found work as a city guard. As such, she is usually on day duty, patrolling the streets and making minor arrests, lacking the opportunity to use her full abilities and dreaming of the days when she might work as an independent guard, selling her skills to the highest paying merchant to protect valuable goods and important people.

Morals: While Alyssa's job is currently to protect the people, it is just that: a job. If someone offered her a job as a smuggler that paid more then she'd take it and in the event of a crisis, she will be thinking of herself before anyone else. However, Alyssa values human life and if someone is in real danger, she will help them, even if it means risking her life. If someone is being robbed and she is off duty, she will usually look the other way, especially if a bribe is involved.

Personality: Alyssa comes across as easy-going and friendly, which she probably is, but at the same time she can be cunning and sly. Alyssa has ambition and she loves money. In fact, there's probably only two things she loves more than money and those are adventure and fame.

Description of appearance: 5'8, slender with obvious curves and slight muscle, blonde hair she keeps in a ponytail with bangs hanging in her face (like Ino, from Naruto), blue grey eyes, she tends to wear dark brown- and gold-colored leather with a gold cloak

Character background: She lives by herself. Her family - her father, in particular - is pro-science, and she is the only magic-user. Ergo, she was disowned - by her father, especially. Now, she hates science and lives in the outermost parts of the city, where she runs into very few people and little science. She needs someone kind and caring to soften her hardened heart.

Name: Damien Marsh

Age: 20

Description of appearance: Medium tall and athletic, with short black hair and bright green eyes.

Fighting status: Damien fights as a duelist, and can handle either his rapier or pistol with ease. Even so, he prefers sparring with his friends over serious duels.

Magical status (whether if he/she can invoke magic or not): Yes, but only a little.

Character background: Damien was born into a wealthy, quasi-noble family that chose to live in the city's outskirts, favouring the more classical atmosphere. His father dictated that he and his two sisters should learn magic as part of their schooling. However, Damien disliked learning magic, partly for his sisters' natural talent, partly for the perfection required by it. He was fascinated by the scientific advances in the main city, however, though his father forbade him pursuing his so-called 'fantasies'.

His weakness in magic serves as an embarrassment to his father, who sits on a council of mages in the outer suburbs. While not officially sanctioned by the government, the council's ties to certain noble familes means that they are able to exert a certain amount of influence over the outskirts.

The family expects Damien's older sister to take over their father's seat on the council, while he and his younger sister will divide up the family's merchant holdings. Damien intends to increase the scientific focus on the businesses as soon as he can, although his actual input would be relatively small. High society expects the nobles to do relatively little work, only to reap the rewards of owning the business.

In public, Damien behaves like an average noble brat, the result of his older sister bullying him with her magic in private.

Name: Karman Mayfield

Age: 18

Song which represents her: Californication- Red Hot Chili Peppers

Description of appearance: Karman is of above average height, has dirty, dark brown hair at shoulder's length (often tied in a pony tail, especially for more physically demanding tasks) and dark eyes. She is curvy with broad shoulders and wide hips. She is dressed in a cargo black pants with a belt, red collared t-shirt (long sleeved), black boots and sometimes a cowgirl hat.

Magical status: High. She has her mother's alleles which allow her to easily call upon magic. From an early age, she is tutored in the arts of elemental magic as it is a highly sought after type of magic in terms of combat and industry. Her most powerful form of magic is lightning based spells with other elemental spells following closely. If the situation calls for it, she can also enchant a weapon with the elemental magic. She also has knowledge of chemistry-related spells.

Character Background: Karman is a single child raised from a wealthy and a noble family in the city. As they are high in social status, her parents are often referred to as lord and lady. Her father works as a chemistry researcher at a university campus from afternoon till night. In the morning, he lectures at the theatre for up to a thousand chemistry students. He helps contribute a large portion of the family’s income and some of the reputation.

Her mother works for the F.B.I and is considered to be more of the masculine role of the parents, because she is manlier in appearance as well as being physically stronger than the father. It is from her mother that Karman was trained to be high heeled in elemental magic and competent in the use of a long sword. She carries it in a scabbard attached to her belt to show that she is of nobility.

Karman is a university student at the same place that her father works and studies Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English. She sees her dad often, but they hardly exchange greetings or talk unless it is necessary. As her parents are often busy, it is seldom for them to get together and discuss their experiences and feelings as a family. As a result, Karman is either by herself or with her friends, growing to be the independent and mature person she is.

In her free time, she travels to the outskirts of the city to be with her childhood friend and family. They live in a rural and isolated area, working as farmers. As she visits them often, she has gained a deep appreciation of their lifestyle, involving herself in their farm life for leisure and to increase the efficiency of their business. She is careful not to show reveal her deeper feelings for her friend. In the past, Karman took their friendship to another level, resulting in conflicts and confusion from her friend and her parents.

She comes across as a serious and friendly person, though her friendliness is more due to her being able to tolerate others.

She is willing to help others if it means that her ideas and thoughts will be considered by the other person. She also listens and respects other people's opinions and feelings, for she doesn't want to cause any harm or be in any form of trouble.

Name: Kennedy Trinnen (Kenny)

Age: 17

Description of Appearance: Flaming red hair and bright green eyes. Thin and petite. She has small, angular features, and could be considered beautiful. Magical status: Very high. She was born doing magic, according to her grandmother. She was educated in the proper use of magic since the age of three, which is the magic number. Her specialty in magic is in healing and in the four elements (fire, water, earth, air), and she can regularly exercise telepathy and telekinesis.

Background: She was born to Hessa Trinnen, who died in a strange explosion. Her grandmother and grandfather have raised her. She is just graduating from her private school and plans to become a healer for the magical doctoral practice across the street. She lives between the outskirts and the city, in the 'suburbs' and she has her own house, as both of her grandparents died. She has no siblings.

Personality: Kennedy is extremely dramatic, and loves to be in the limelight. She is outgoing and loves to make friends and talk, but she knows when to stop invading someone's personal bubble. Kenny has a tendency to pull on her bottom lip with her fingers when she's uncomfortable.
The song that would best describe her is 'New Soul' by Yael Naim, because it's bouncy and bubbly like her.

Name: Echo Bryce

Nickname: Known as Wanderer sometimes

Gender: Female

Age: 19

Description of appearance:

Overall body: Light olive skin. 5'5, slight build.
Eyes: Incredibly light gray. She seems blind but her black pupils give her away.
Face: Angular, elfin face with a scar on the side left jaw from when she was in a knife fight.
Hair: Ravens black. Blue-purple sheen.

Magical status: Medium - High. Echo can only do defense and healing magic. EX. Force fields and wound healing.

Character background: Echo grew up in the middle of the city. She was always the odd child out so she decided to explore. Soon her time was occupied by the exploration and mapping of the basic and secret routes around her city. Echo, being a social person, started making friends in both high and low places. She spent her days wandering and making everlasting friendships that she could call upon anytime. Most people respect Echo and she is possibly the highest status person that isn't nobility. She wanders throughout the city now, keeping close ties with 'her people' and her mother and father.

Personality: Echo's a natural rebel. She likes to get into trouble and haul herself back out. She leads raids on the rich so she could help the poor. She's a lot like a modern day Robin Hood. The mischievous Echo also has a good side to her. She's very compassionate and sympathetic. Loyalty is her first priority.

Name: Ilum

Age: 23

Magical status: No

Personality: Quiet and distant. He has a soft heart, but sometimes has trouble showing it.

Character background: He used to be a scientist for a major corporation specilizing in robotics. The company known as Aqua Tech was working on ways of limiting manuel labor. Ilum specialized in cybornetics and loked for ways to improve human phycic.

He was reconized for his ideas and sent to work on the project known as "Aqua Pulse." Unknown to him he was to be the test subject. The inplanted him with cybernetics infusing him with many out fits. he was implanted with reflex inhancers, a machanical eye, and infused with an advanced alloy that can block almost anything.

"Aqua Pulse" did not wish to advance labor, but create an army. Ilum was only a test subject and was quickly tossed aside. He was to be exacuted, but he escaped swearing to revenge and descovering the truth.

Weapons: A pistol and knifes. If need be he can improvise.

Other: His implants and inhansments never perfectly bonded with his body. He is continuesly under strian and is slowly dieing. (so he's not godmodding)

Lily: Yip, that's better.

Layleun: Hrmm interesting stealth/ support character. I really like the mapping of the city and the robbery raid ideas, it adds quite a nice layer with the story book.

Piepiemann22: Everything is fine until you mentioned him being a test subject of Aqua Pulse. I haven't exactly decided if experiments are conducted on people or not. Right now I'm more leaning towards there being no experiments done on humans.

For the advanced alloy thing, even if he malfunctions, there has to be quite a high malfunction rate to even out the advanced alloy idea. I think adding another weakness of him being vulnerable to lightning based attacks would make him seem not that powerful.

Dream, I see where you are coming from so if you want be to change the subject part I will. As for the alloy, I ment he could stop a sword with it, use it to hold onto things well and use the claw as a wepon, that's about it. It couldn't stop a bulet, jrust me.

Name: Charles Austin

Description of appearance: Charles has iron grey hair, a deadpan wit and a face that shows no emotion. He works as a private investigator, outside the regular police, in the inner city and has no shortage of work. He wears the long, dark cloak classic of men in his line of work. Cleverly manufactured, it allows him to stand in shadows unnoticed where a completely black coat would show up. He often wears a hat of the same colour and covers his eyes with a pair of shades once owned by a member of the Queen's Royal Guard.

The gun is just for show. A proper investigator, he reasons, would never allow himself to be judge, jury and executioner.

Magical status: None.

Character Background: Charles' seriousness and cynical nature made him ideal to go into the family profession: detectives. So far he has been the most successful out of all his brothers, and indeed sisters, which has only made him more determined to be the best there ever was.

From an early age he was taught, by his parents, to analyse. Whether it was situations, people or places, Charles was expected to take in the information and form solid conclusions based on the evidence. He was a natural.

However, although his intelligence and aptitude for solving crime was incredible, Charles spent more time analysing people than learning how to care for emotions. As such, he is often considered rude and unsociable even though this is not the case. Charles is not in a long term relationship, and, as far as he knows, he never will be.

Apart from an ingrained sense of right and wrong, there is little more to Charles' life. He lives for his job, and in a sense it was what he was born to do.

By himself, Charles is not a strong man. He often relies on just his intelligence and careful planning to create the best situation for himself. His cunning and sinister methods of closing off every opportunity of escape to criminals is both renowned and infamous. But if, by some miracle, he is surprised, then Detective Charles Austin can find himself in very dire straits.

His reputation is reason enough for someone to want him dead.

OK, here goes:

Name: Gordan Josegh
Age/Appearance: 35 years old, 5'4, slight build, he exercises but not in excess, so he's toned, but not muscly. He has brown eyes and brown hair that doesn't get cut often so he keeps it tied back. His face is over expressive, so he can't lie very well. He tends to wear whatever he can find, not interested in fashion or how he looks, the only reason he exercises is because it's healthy.
Magical status: Fully developed and trained, he is one of the heads of the rainmakers and deals directly with the royal family. He loves working with his magic, and sometimes does guest lectures at the university as he wants to encourage younger people to join.
Personality: He's really easy to get along with as he thinks the best of everyone, unfortunately this also means that he trusts people easily as well, making him an easy target for scammers. He believes in helping people, and thinks that magic was created for that purpose, as a means to fix problems, and help create better lives. He doesn't understand how people can not like magic, or not trust it, and that's the one thing that makes him angry, when people reject magic.
Charactor Background: He grew up in one of the rural areas, with a mother that had good morals, and thought that her son should respect all that he meets, should always be curtious, and should always try to help. The community he grew up in was very close-knit, and everyone helped everyone. Magic was abundent, and it surrounded him wherever he went, so when they found out he had talent, they instantly started training him up.
His Mother, had grown up in a city however, and therefore knew that not all places were like this, but if he was going to get anywhere in life he'd have to move away. When it came to the point where he was getting too grown up to want to stay with her, she told him to go to the capital, and apply for a scholarship to get into the university. He did so, and succeeded, progressing to become one of the best students that had passed through their halls.
However, when he came to the city, he had some bad experiences with thieves and scamming merchants, not being used to people not being nice. He found few friends as they all thought of him as being th "country bumpkin" and didn't think him good enough for them. When he graduated he was in depression, and had no idea where to go. Thankfully his good grades meant that he had plenty of references from his professors that wanted him to go into the rainmakers. So he went, and they took him in.
He rose up in the ranks fast, and was one of the heads by the time he was 27, the youngest ever. The royal family favoured him ,and he became the representative of the rainmakers for the royal family.
Now he has settled into life in the city, and his trusting personality has returned, though not quite to the same extent.
