PROLOGUE

"Goodbye"

The single simple word, which should not have affected me in the least, caused my heart to give an unexpected lurch of pain, as I stared at the dangerous, breathtakingly handsome boy who'd spoken it.

So this was goodbye...

I'd known all along that this moment would come; it was as inevitable as death itself.

I'd just never imagined that it would hurt so much...

"Okay." My voice cracked and I quickly turned away from him. I couldn't bring myself to return the word that only stated aloud what was already known within. This was goodbye. I would never see him again. Speaking the word “Goodbye” back to him would just be a verbal confirmation of the obvious. Plus if I was to say that one word to him, I knew I would break down right then and there, and that was something I would not allow myself to do.

So I turned away.

And leaving the word unspoken from my lips, I took a step forward into the shallow waters of the lake I'd found myself in when I'd first happened upon this dimension. And as I did so, I couldn't suppress the gasp that escaped my trembling lips as the clear water met my warm skin with an icy surprise.

But despite the waters unpleasant chill, I made my way deeper. Inches from the center of the lake, inches from my journey back home to my own dimension, I stopped. I turned and allowed myself one final look at him. I studied his every feature until his unblemished image was etched in the back of my mind, until I was sure I could never forget him.

Then suddenly, there were unpredicted tears rolling down my cool cheeks. I brushed them away with my fingertips and blinked away a few more that threatened to break through.

Why was I crying? This was what I had wanted, right? The entire year I’d been here I’d been searching for a way back home to my father and little sister. So why was my heart being consumed by sorrow at the fact that I was finally about to leave?

I suddenly knew the answer as I met his fiery gaze. He was always cranky and cynical. We were always arguing, but in that moment, now that I was about to lose him forever...

I realized that I had fallen hopelessly in love with him...

More tears formed in my eyes and I quickly turned away from his scorching gaze before he had the chance to notice them. I was in love with him. But how had that happened?

“It’s time.” His melodic voice caused me to turn my head. My heart dropped to my toes as his lips broke into a crooked smile, that I’m sure was meant to comfort and reassure me, but all it did was torture me.

So this was truly goodbye...

I returned the smile, faking a happiness I was sure I would never feel again. I turned away from him and shut my eyes and without a word, stepped into the center of the lake, and as I did so, I stepped beyond the invisible barrier that separated our two worlds.

I heard the water before I felt it. I opened my eyes just in time to watch it rise up into the air, twisting about my body like a rose vine around a post. It was a beautiful sight, but at the same time it was also heartbreaking. It confirmed my journey home. Soon I was being swallowed by a bright light...

This was it. This was the beginning. This was the end. Soon I would be home. My chests tightened as I realized that I would have rather stayed here and made this place my home. I would have rather stayed here with him.

But that had not been on my list of options. I had been told by the elder of that dimension that my being in a world I do not belong in, would cause everyone’s future to alter from its original course, and that would have thrown destiny way off track.

Plus I still had a father, and little sister to get back to. If they were still there waiting for me...

My thoughts ceased as the sound of vehicles passing by filled me ears. I didn't have to open my eyes to know that I was finally home, but I did anyway. I was standing outside, facing a huge mansion that looked very famliar...

Chills raced down my spine as memories crept there way through my mind. This was where it had all started. That night, one year ago. I'd come to the Old Newberry's Mansion on a dare. It was said to be haunted.

That day, I had stepped through the doorway picturing a dim dusty room, with cobwebs in every corner. But that was not what happened. I didn't find myself in an old dim dusty room. No, I had found myself slipping through a void of darkness, slipping through the gateway that led to another dimension.

Tears collected in my eyes, and before I could stop myself I threw myself through the doorway, picturing nothing but his face, imagining all of the adventures we could find in his world...

Only this time, I didn't find myself falling through a dark void. Instead, I found myself in a huge room, much like the room I had imagined that day.

I wanted to go back though. I needed to see him once more, but I couldn't and I knew I couldn't. My heart seemed to stop for a moment and then speed, pounding violently against my chest. I would really never see him again.

The reality of this tore at my mind until I was rocking back and forth on the verge of insanity...

"Red." His name rolled off my tongue, leaving a bittersweet taste in my mouth.

Then all at once everything faded from around me as the earth tilted and collided with my body and I found myself slipping into a dark oblivion. In that moment, I found my mind drifting from me, it drifted so far away that it was a wonder if I'd ever find it again, if I'd ever find my way out of the darkness...

But that was okay with me, because my mind had drifted to a place I now longed so much for. In my mind I was remembering every moment of that year in that other dimension. i was practically reliving that year...

Helloooo
I really liked your piece, it was very interesting and absorbing. I really liked your descriptions. In my opinion they were vivid and not overly descriptive. The one thing I noticed, was that some of your sentences are a bit long; such as the first one.
Other than that though, I really liked it. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work on this story.

Hmm as for the name.. I guess it depends on what kind of names you like. I can give you a list and if you like any.. :]

-Theodore [haha I'm thinking of using that one in one of my current pieces. Theo, Teddy]
-Rhys
-Rune
-Jak
-Desmond
-Kylan
-Adonis

But anyways I really loved your story.

Here's a quick review.

I turned away from him and shut my eyes and without a word, stepped into the center of the lake, and as I did so, I stepped beyond the invisible barrier that separated our two worlds.

Too many things happening in one sentence.

Tears collected in my eyes, and before I could stop myself I threw myself through the doorway, picturing nothing but his face, imagining all of the adventures we could find in his world...
Confusing... Who is being referred to here? The main character and Red or is she already with someone else? Also, the myself sounds a bit repetitive here. And lastly, the "could find" should be replaced with a "have found"... if it was Red being referred to here... (I'm having a feeling it's him.)

I wanted to go back though.
Remove the "though" since it's already been said above that the main character wants to go back to Red's world. Having the "though" here somehow makes it sound like an option...

I needed to see him once more, but I couldn't and I knew I couldn't.
Okay... something's wrong here... replace the last "couldn't" with "it".

My heart seemed to stop for a moment and then speed, pounding violently against my chest.
Replace "speed" with "sped".

So, there. :D
Overall, the story was good. I like the idea of you starting with how everything ended. Nice touch. And I really like the last two paragraphs wherein she seemingly goes insane. And I'm having a feeling that she's going back to that other dimension. Is she? Gah. I have to wait for the rest of your story.

Keep on writing!
Best of luck.
