Wow. That was seriously the first thing that came to my mind. Wow.
This was really amazing. I liked how the girl finally sucked it up and said what needed to be said. It made me sympathize with her, even if I hadn't agreed with her earlier decisions. Very nice. I'd have to agree with christy way up there above me that this was hard to read, but in a good way. The emotions it jerked out of me were great.
Only thing that I could find was that when they are "thanking god", "God" should be capitalized, since we are talking about a single entity and that's his proper name.
And yeah, about the apostrophe/quotation thing: there is a reason it is called the "quotation mark". I hear where you are coming from and while there may be published authors out there who misuse it, there is a conventional usage that is more universally accepted and respected. It makes it look like you don't know the difference and it confused me the entire time, since I'm used to the double mark " . As it was, I kept thinking that there were a bunch of contractions. The reason we have that mark is so that it is recognized that there is a missing letter or a quote within a quote and the double mark is for quotations. That's the way they were designed to be used and when you abuse them, people just get confused and it doesn't reflect well on you. Neither (and I don't mean any offense) does your refusal to change.
Don't take what I am saying the wrong way. You are a magnificent writer and obviously an intelligent person. But this isn't just a style thing, it's a grammar/punctuation thing and it's going to reflect poorly on your in most circles.
I'm going to tell you to do what you think is best (it's your story after all and you can do whatever the heck you want with it) but I'm also going to warn you that there are people (and these people might be in the professional ring who may one day handle your work) that will not treat it so tolerantly.
Nevertheless, the story was amazing and I hugely enjoyed reading it. You are quite the talented author.
*thumbs up*
