John's Tale-

John spent most of his days tending to his sheep, raising his children and loving his wife. As he walked across the plain to where his sheep had gathered, he noticed that the day was very hot so he decided to walk them along the field, and down to a creek that bordered his property. As they moseyed along, he noticed that, despite the heat, the day was wonderful. All the birds were singing, particularly the Blue Canfers, which made a low whistle that gradually grew into a near shriek. John didn’t like the sound himself, but his daughter, Ellie loved the little birds. every time John took her out to the woods and held her on his shoulders so she could hear them better. She would purse her lips together and try to sing like them, often ending with John covered in spittle.
John heard everything, all the little scampering of feet on leaves, or a slight pecking of a tree by a Bark Pecker, he even saw a black tailed falcon swoop down out of the sky majestically, and snatch a hare off the ground. Life was good for John, overall.
Finally he and his flock came to the old creek and as his sheep started to drink the cool water coming from the babbling brook up from the north, he decided to take a nap, and refresh himself, he knew his sheep wouldn’t leave his protection.
John dreamt of wondrous things, such as, his oldest boy growing up to be a Shepherd, like he was, and meeting a lovely young woman. And his youngest daughter, deciding that she never needed to get married, and chose to live with her parents the rest of her life, which would delight John and his wife.
John had only been asleep for a few hours when he awoke to his sheep bleating. He jumped up quickly, ready to protect his flock from any predators within the area, he scanned the surrounding woodlands expecting to see brigands or maybe a hungry goblin, but saw nothing. John, holding his quarterstaff tightly, wondered what had spooked his flock and noticed that nothing was out of the norm, except…for the smell of smoke.
John left behind his sheep as he sped towards the direction of the acrid smoke, it was coming directly from his cottage. He cleared the woods and in between gasps of breath, saw what caused the smoke. Before him, there was horrible carnage, his cows laid motionless off the right of his burning cottage. No birds sang, no critters crawled. Nothing moved. John raced towards his cottage slowly, it felt like he was in quicksand, and when he was finaly within fifty feet away, he stopped dead in his tracks. up ahead he saw…..

“John” came a voice. And again, louder, “John, wake up.”
John opened his eyes and looked around, he was in the same room he had been in the past few months, he sighed audibly, “what?” he asked. He had been dreaming of his life before this. Before he came to Fort Peril, or so they called it.
“It’s time for our exercises and some more training. Same as every other day we spend here.” replied a gruff man.
“Ugh." John replied as he sat up. "Do I have to? I was up half the night moving those damn rocks from the east side of the courtyard, to the west. What is the point of that? And why don’t you do it too?”
The man laughed heartily and said, “I don’t do that because I have been here a whole hell of a lot longer than you. Your doing it to build strong muscles on those tiny sheep herding arms of yours, and by the way, you knew what you were getting into when you signed up for this.”
“I know, I just never really thought it through is all.” said john as he pulled on his tunic and his trousers.
“’Thought it through’? hell, none of us thought it through, we’re all here for the same reason Johnny, and it’s the simplest reason there is, revenge.”
John stomped on his calf-high boots and silently agreed as he thought, ‘and revenge we shall have, more than any of us have bargained for.’ John walked out of dark pit that he now called his room and readied himself for another long agonizing day. He would not or, could not, let himself rest or die until the people responsible for his families death were brought to justice. He knew the only way he could make the people truly responsible for their deaths pay, was by being here. The End, so far?

Thanks.

I do think you have something here. It seems almost criminal to end it there. I think you should let John have his revenge after his life and love were stolen from him. A bit of a slow start but it worked overall.
Now, editing.
There were a few grammar mistakes here and there in the beginning, but they looked like typos to me. There were a few more in the last bit so I've fixed them up for you.

“’Thought it through’? Hell, none of us thought it through. We’re all here for the same reason Johnny, and it’s the simplest reason there is; revenge.”

he thought, ‘and revenge we shall have, more than any of us have bargained for.’

I found this sentence a little confusing.Consider re-wording it.
I also noticed that you don't use commas in your dialogue.

It works like this.
'Let's go and see,' Sally said.
'Sally said' is an add on to the dialogue, so it needs a comma.
She said, 'I'm on my way.'
Same idea.

Fix up those few errors and you'll have quite a story on your hands. I look forward to reading more :)

Hmm, I'll admit I'm intrigued. You have a distinct style, darling, not many people can do that kind of wide-scope 3ed-person omniscient voice. One bit of advice--you might want to watch where you put your commas, you've got a few in awkward spots, and also keep an eye on your capitalizations. Aside from that, you might perhaps want to give us more of an intro to your world and character, perhaps a little more "show don't tell," if you know what I mean.

Overall, though, a good start and keep going!

Oh, one small thing: would you mind putting spaces between your paragraphs, please, makes it much easier to read.

I'm actually not a fan of the style at all. I think in modern fantasy novels you really need to zoom in with your characters. Even in worlds of magic a reader needs to have a common ground and empathy with your characters. To simply narrate what happens to them appears a little tacky and poor.

Gyr's show don't tell point is really interesting here. Its not "It was a cold day." Its more of a "He shivered as the ice winds clawed at his skin..." type thing (bad example, but the ideas there.)

Good luck with your future projects.

Thanks for the posts. I was not sure if it was any good. I didn't create a world for the story because it was just a warm up that i liked. I think i will put it into my Novel (I say loosely.) that I am working on and start posting that soon.

Oh gyrfalcon, when you say, "not many people can do that kind of wide-scope 3ed-person omniscient voice" i hope you meen me? haha. its the only way i know how to write, so i hope i can do it good. lol.

Once again thanks.

Well, there were only a few things I personally noticed. There were a couple of run-on sentences that you might want to use semicolons for. There were a few capitalization mistakes, and a few grammar mistakes as well. All in all, a pretty good story.
