Chapter 5- Divide and Conquer
Cerulea had recovered rather quickly, and was happily watching the battles with the others. She sat between Liat and Crystal, her two friends in the group.
“Thanks again for healing me, Cerulea.” Liat said, looking at her.
“Oh, it was nothing. I’d do that for Tor, Viti, or even Tenion under those circumstances.”
“Still, thanks.”
Soon, the announcer called their team.
“Team Alpha’s competitors will be Tenion Fuolose and Cerulea Ghiacio.”
“I’ll be back soon.” Cerulea said, walking to the teleportation pad along with Tenion.
They then appeared in front of two other people, and Cerulea guessed that they were wind and Earth elementals, based completely on clothing and build. She could easily be wrong, as fire elementals could sometimes be nearly as muscular as earth elementals, like Tenion.
“Let the battle begin!”
“I’ll take the wind girl.” Cerulea whispered before charging. She opened he water vial and began to battle. The girl’s black hair was all that got wet, thanks to her speed. This further encouraged that she was wind elemental. Cerulea continued to attack with her vial, though her attacks were evaded easily.
Meanwhile, Tenion fought the earth elemental, caught in a competition of muscle. Tenion sped around, evading his attacks, but he couldn’t land a decent hit and found himself eventually knocked onto the ground.
Before they could realize what happened, the girl teleported away, confirming her element. The boy-who could easily pass off as nearly 20- ran back. The girl blasted wind into the air, flinging him at a perfect angle to strike Tenion. She then used a barrier to stop Tenion from trying to evade the attack. Cerulea realized what had to be done, and used her vial to launch herself above the boy.
He looked up in fear as water began to pour out of her vial, striking him square on the back. He was thrown to the ground, unable to continue. Medics rushed him away.
But this triumph was short lived, as when Cerulea fell to the ground, the girl stuck her unconscious. Medics carried her away as well.
The remaining two, Tenion and the wind elemental, prepared to continue. Tenion tried to calm down as the girl sped at him. He positioned his arms just right so he could fling her into a back flip and attack. The girl hastily retaliated, landing two direct hits. Tenion was almost unable to continue. One more hit like that and he would lose. But a burst of energy allowed him to run around her in a circle. The girl tried to attack, but his speed prevented her from landing any hits. He finally began his attack, using a barrage of fireballs to strike her. She finally fell, and medics came to take her off the field.
Tenion and Cerulea had won.
“Nice job, guys!” Liat said, giving Cerulea a high-five. Cerulea was overjoyed to have contributed to the team. She and Liat had become good friends very quickly. Tomorrow would be the next round, three on three matches. They already knew who would compete: Tor, Viti, and Crystal. Tor wasn’t excited about it.
“What’s up?” Liat said, sitting down beside him.
“It’s just…This isn’t what I wanted.”
“What?” Liat said, taken aback. After all, Tor was the one who suggested entering the tournament to Liat in the first place. Liat was the one who needed convincing
“I don’t want to be in a team.”
“Why?”
Tor shook his head. “When I told you I wanted to enter the tournament, I thought I would win and I would be respected.”
‘Wait…you mean-”
“I thought it would just be me. Fans cheering, mom and dad being pleased with me. I don’t want to have to share that feeling. And when you got exactly that in your one on one match, I couldn’t stand it. I just…It isn’t fair.”
“Tor, do you honestly think I would gloat and soak up that attention?”
“What?”
I don’t like attention. That’s why I work in groups so much, so I don’t get that.”
“So?”
“Tor, I wanted to be in that three on three match tomorrow, and if not, I would want two on two. You saw what I did: made the most of what I had, didn’t go and change everything. Tor, you have to be able to handle not getting what you want and pull through.”
“Well, fine,” Tor said, looking up. “Cheer for me.”
“Tor, I don’t care if you’re fighting with a hundred teammates. I’m cheering louder then everybody else put together.”
Sleep came peacefully that night.
Team Alpha waited patiently for them to be called to the arena. Tor was stretching, and Crystal was drawing energy from her book.
“How does that book work, anyway?” Liat said to Cerulea, figuring that she knew.
“Well, mom was concerned for Crystal because we live in a dangerous section of the lake, but she knew I could take care of myself. So she enchanted one of her books so she could draw energy from it and use techniques without much practice.”
“So your mom’s an ice elemental?”
“Right, and dad’s water. Same sort of case with you?”
“Exactly. Mom’s wind and dad’s thunder.”
They were then called to battle. Crystal, Tor, and Viti teleported to the arena.
Before them were two boys and a girl. The boys stood in front of her, almost blocking the girl from view.
“Begin!”
Viti closed her eyes and focused. Within five seconds, a vine about two feet in diameter sprung up from the ground. Crystal then fired shards of ice at it, causing it to be even more harmful to their opponents.
While their opponents were distracted, Tor rushed forward and struck one of the boys. He wounded him, but he wasn’t out. The girl jumped out suddenly and placed her hands on the boy. He was soon up again and ready to battle.
Tor retreated back behind the cover of the vine. Crystal then moved in with ice shards, this time directly at their opponents. They swiftly dodged, only to be hit by small vines Viti had summoned.
The battle continued, the girl restoring any damage they managed to inflict upon the boys.
Tor shook his head. This couldn’t go on any longer. He blasted the biggest gust he could, blowing them into the wall. His attack had an unfortunate side affect, though. All of Viti’s vines, including the large one, were blown away. Their opponents got up and the fighting began again. Team Alpha came close to victory many times, but the girl would always instantly heal her allies when they went down.
Finally, Viti managed to slip past the boys. She called a small vine, which she used to pull the girl’s leg underground. Unable to move or heal her allies, she struggled to escape.
Tor and Crystal, meanwhile, were growing weary of this tedious battle. Tor knocked them both out and Crystal froze them, then prepared to attack the girl before she healed them. It was then that they noticed that she was knocked out on the ground.
“Team Alpha wins! Congratulations to them, as they will be moving on to the final match against the amazing Team…uh…Whatever. Team Whatever. Talk about uncreative. But they can fight!”
Tor, Crystal, and Viti returned to the room.
“We did it!” Crystal said, jumping up and down. “We’re in the finals!”
