Hi,
So this is what I have for my speech so far, please tell me what I can make better. It is not finished, I still did not put feeling into this speech.

Abuse

Have you ever gone home after school and everyday you had your mom tell you that you were stupid, fat, ugly, or useless? Have you ever cried your self to sleep every night because one of you parents was beating you every day? Have you ever felt that you were not good enough because of the things that your parent/guardian said to you?

Good evening judges, teachers and fellow students. My name is Nicole Hackett and the topic I have chosen to speak on this year is Abuse.

There are many different types of abuse, the first one being Emotional Abuse. Emotional abuse is consistently telling someone that they are worthless, for example. Telling someone they are not worthy of love is emotional abuse. Withholding of affection is also emotional abuse. Manipulation of someone so that they do precisely what the manipulator wants is emotional abuse example "If you loved me, you'd do x." "If you don't do this, then you don’t love me.”

The second type of abuse is Sexual Abuse. Sexual abuse is when any unwanted sexual attention is given, such as sexual comments, grabbing, touching, kissing or sex through force, pressure or threats, in other words rape.

The third is Physical Abuse. Physical abuse is any physical harm done to a person. Slapping, punching, kicking, biting, spitting, pushing and shoving, beatings, whippings, hitting, scratching, would all be examples of physical abuse.

The next example is Verbal Abuse. Verbal abuse is a pattern of behavior that can interfere with ones positive emotional development; over time this can lead to significant amount of damage to ones self esteem, physical state and emotional well-being.

These are the five most common times of abuse. Some others include, Religious abuse, is physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, used in connection to religious rite. Also using religious tenets to excuse sexual, physical, or emotional abuse. Like excusing a persons physical or sexual abuse because they are said to be “evil”.

Another example would be Financial Abuse, is when a person is controlling, through whatever way they can, a persons financial sources, such as money for clothing, food, shelter, etc. An example of this would be someone saying “Sign this check or I’ll beat you”.

Abuse is something that occurs everywhere in every part of the world. It is also a form of bullying. Fighting with siblings is normal but when one sibling has more control over what is going on it is abuse, for example, if one is getting picked on more and the other doesn’t have say.

Hey, lakegirls!

You have a really good topic here. However, my response to your intro was, "Uhm, no".

An intro is good. However, you don't want to have an open-ended one that smart-alecks like myself leap and and shred. Best not to start off your intro with a question. Instead, use a story, or an analogy, or something to that extent. When you're speaking, you're the one in charge. You should go in with the attitude that no one in your audience knows more about the topic than you do--so why are you quizzing them? Inform, not interrogate.

Really, once you get your intro down, you have a very powerful speech in the works. Tell me how it goes!

You're giving a speech to a crowd that includes judges? Cool. I would never have the guts to do that. :P

All right, you said that you would put more 'feeling' in this later, so I won't comment on that. I do think you should talk about the after-affects of abuse, though; how kids become more vulernable to insults in school because they've heard them a million times at home, how they may feel uncomfortable hugging their friends because their parents never hugged them, how they hide bruises with long sleeves, how they believe it's all their fault. Don't just define the terms; that's what we have dictionary.com for. :P

Also, make sure you have a conclusion, just like a normal essay. You can't go on and on and then stop. You have to let the crowd know that you're stopping; they're weird that way. :P Summarize briefly what you said, tell them that it's never their fault, tell them to get help if it's happening, etc. Don't just stop.

Also, do you have a time limit for this? Since it's a speech, I read it aloud instead of in my head, and it was rather short. I'm not sure if you can get your point across that quickly. If there is a limit, though, you'll have to make every letter count. :P

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I've actually been a victim of verbal/emotional abuse from my father (half the reason I got a restraining order,) and can help if you if you need it. It usually helps to have someone with first-hand experience, although I've never had to deal with hiding any bruises, luckily. :P

Hi Lakegirls!

Okay. I liked your speech as an essay, but it didn't seem to flow very well as a speech. I'm sure you'll take care of that later, though, when you add more feeling into it.

I agree that you might want to change your intro paragraph, and take out the questions, or at least some of them. If you are reading this in front of students, I hate to admit it, but they will probably shout things out when you ask these questions. This would only distract you and keep you from presenting the rest of your speech well.

Oh, and also---when posting it on here, you might want to take out your full name. You probably didn't even realize it was still in there.

Good luck!
