Dear Journal.
It’s been a long year since that horrible night when I was faced with the horrors of death. It was the most horrifying day of my life. I remember it only to well. I remember the tears that were cried, and the screams that echoed in the night. My heart still swells with sadness thinking about this nightmare. It was the last night that the R.M.S Titanic was above water.
On April 10th 1912, me and many other joyous people got on board the R.M.S Titanic. It was the biggest, most beautiful ship, no doubt the world has ever seen, and the thought that it was unsinkable made the whole experience much more enjoyable (or so we thought). Cheerfulness filled my body as I reached the sturdy plank that was going to assist me on the gigantic ship. When I reached the top my heart was pounding with excitement.
Though the outside of the ship was beautiful, it was nothing compared to the inside . Big oak doors carved ever so carefully, lead into a very classy dining room, with the smell of good food ,and the sound of relaxing music, and to top it off they used the finest china and silver wear. The best part was that services were waiting on your hand an foot. This room was defiantly my taste . I could hardly wait to see the room I would be sleeping in on my way back from England. I really hoped that it was a room I was going to like. When I saw the room it was nothing like I had expected it to be. I didn’t like it, I loved it. This room had all of my needs and wants. I loved every thing about, and there was nothing I disliked. The big Four poster bed stood in the corner of the room with even prettier carving on the headboard then the oak door to the dining room. A dim light from the bedside lamp shone on it, giving it a cozy affect. I could tell that the bed was the main attraction of the room no doubt about it. The rest of the room was filled with a dresser, nightstand, closet, and flower wall paper that looked as if it was hand painted. My heart filled with happiness as I looked around, I could tell I was going to have a good time on this ship.
After wandering around for a bit I realized that this place had everything. A daycare, swimming pool, ballroom, it even had a church. The four days I’ve spent so far on this ship was the best time I have ever had. I was almost to sad to leave .I decided I needed to get relaxed. So I went back to my room to read one of my books. It turned out to be very relaxing. Sitting on my bed and reading quietly. Absorbing every word I read. But suddenly A “CRASH” threw me to the floor like I was rag doll. The crash was followed by a horrifying scraping sound and then silence. I stood terrified in my first class room, were half my stuff was scattered across the floor. Then there was a knock at the door.
It was one of the Crew members. I asked him breathlessly
“ what’s going on” followed by his reply “we’ve hit an ice burg” I sighed in relief. Nothing to worry about, this ship unsinkable. I turned to go back into my room, but he stopped me and asked me to grab a life jacket and get out to the deck. That was when I saw panic in his eyes which soon filled my own. We were sinking.
Just as I got outside and on to the deck sad sorrowful music filled my ears. Nearby a band was playing. It seemed to calm me down, and a realized at once that, that was what they were there for. Another crew member ordered me to get into the life boat he was standing next to. I turned it down and offered it to a woman and her two children. I kept helping people in to life boats until I decided it was my turn. As I went to the life boat the crew member stopped me and said I wouldn’t make it far before the Titanic sunk, and the suction pulled the boats under. I didn’t listen. I grabbed the oar and gave it to the woman next to me. Then I took one, climbed into the unsteady little boat and prepared myself to row as hard as I could. I was terrified for the lives of the people still stranded on the Titanic. I wanted to help them but I knew this was the best I could do. We reached a spot where we wouldn’t be dragged under. In the distance I heard a loud “crack” and I saw that the ship had cracked in two. Then it started to sink. When it sank , my happiness that night sunk with it, and I could hear the screams in the night that I always heard in my nightmares.
After we were rescued by a nearby ship I was saddened to think that the people I had been talking to, the band, the captain, and many others were suffering in the cold night, and were probably already dead. That night changed my life, I’ve never been able to look at a ship the same way again. A lot of people thought I was courageous when I helped people get on the boats, and help the people on my own boat row to safety. From the night of April 14th 1912 people have referred to me as “The unsinkable Molly Brown”
