I wrote this for 1dering at stars' Fairytale Contest. I've never written anything close to this style, it was hard to keep it simple, see how you like it!

The Three Little Foals

Once upon a time, there were three little foals. They were all born on the same day and in the same place, but they were very different.

The first foal was handsome and swift. Everywhere he went, people pointed and smiled.

The second foal was powerful and graceful. Everywhere she went, people admired her form.

The third foal was tiny and weak. Everywhere he went, people shook their heads and walked away.

The three foals played together often, even though the third foal sometimes had a hard time keeping up. They did everything together and if they were alike in some way, it was that they each had a dream.

The first foal wanted to be a racehorse. People would travel for miles to see him run, he would be legend!

The second foal wanted to be a show-horse. People would travel for miles to see her prance, she would be legend!

The third foal wanted to be a wild horse. Horses would travel for miles to run in his herd, he would be free!

The other foals laughed at the third foal’s dreams. “You’re too weak to survive out there!” they said, “No horse would want to follow a weak leader!”

Only the farmer believed in him, he fed him supplements and encouraged him.

When the foals were nearly two years old, the farmer sent the first one to a famous racehorse trainer. He sent the second one to a dressage and show academy. And then he set the third one free.

The first foal became a famous racehorse. He ran against the fastest horse in the world, and he never lost. People traveled for miles to see him run, he was legend!

The second foal became a famous show-horse. She performed against the most elegant horses, and she never lost. People traveled for miles to see her prance, she was legend!

And the third foal became a wild horse. He ran across the prairies at the head of his herd. Horses traveled for miles to join his herd, he was free!

One day, the first foal, now a racehorse, slipped in some mud at the turn of the track. He went down like a pile of stones, never to race again. He returned to his birthplace with the farmer.

Not long after, the second foal, now a show-horse, got her hoof caught in her bridle during a performance. She went down like a pile of stones, never to prance again. She returned to her birthplace with the farmer and the first foal.

Soon, the third foal, now a wild horse, got into a fight with another stallion over his herd. He went down like a pile of stones, but he had been a fighter from the start, on account of his difficult birth. He got up like a loaded spring and won back his herd.

Back at their birth place, the first foal, once a racehorse, and the second foal, once a show-horse, caught a glimpse of the third foal, still a wild horse. He was handsome and swift, powerful and graceful… and he was free.

When the third foal noticed his old playmates, he reared up on his hind legs, whinnied a hello, and then galloped off at the head of his herd.

The first foal lived to a ripe old age. He was known for his old skill and went down in history as one of the greatest racehorses to ever grace the track.

The second foal lived to a ripe old age. She was known for her old skill and went down in history as one of the greatest show-horses to ever grace the stage.

The third foal lived to a ripe old age, though he had many narrow escapes. Not many knew he existed but those who did regarded him as a beautiful wild horse. He never went down in history for his many accomplishments, but to this day his fighting spirit lives on.

Aww, that was really sweet and reminded me of a real fairytale, which is what you were going for, so congratulations. :D Really though, I wouldn't be surprised to see this in one of those illustrated picture books, next to Goldilocks and Hansel and Gretal.

Because fairytales aren't really supposed to be works of art, but rather a simple telling of a simple story, I just have one negative comment: "showhoarse" isn't one word... at least not according to my spell-check. ^_^ Maybe try hyphenating it?

Good job, and good luck with the contest!

P.S. Sorry if this is a completely useless review.

I'm not very good at reviewing children's books, so I won't be nit-picky. I do have one comment, though. I don't think you should repeat the words so often. It gets very annoying. It was just Dr. Suess week, so my English teacher read us one of his books a day, and he didn't do that. I do like the simple story, though, and it shows that those who are fighters make it all the way, and those who are perfect from birth will not always be so.

The bigger the issue, the smaller you write. Remember that. You don’t write about the horrors of war. No. You write about a kid’s burnt socks lying on the road. You pick the smallest manageable part of the big thing, and you work off the resonance.
