Well, Here I Am.

Hi everybody, I'm Matt and I am yet another new member to the forum. I have (like most everybody here probably), been writing since I was a a little kid, but it's only been a couple years since I've gotten really serious about it. (In other words, since I realized that I was any good ) (I'm 16 now) I used to read and write a lot of fantasy, but I had to stop because I got sick of how generic much of it was. (Though I'm still a big fan of LOTR and Terry Pratchett...) So now I read / write mostly sci-fi (usually of the of the "realistic" or steampunk varieties, and I'm also a Browncoat [yay! ])

So anyway, that's me, and I think I'm going to enjoy it here.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, but it's great that you like it! It's a fun genre to write, I think...but it's just a guess :]

I'm also quite a big fan of Pratchett and science fiction in general though I lean more towards fantasy a lot of the time or historical fiction or a nice chunk of dark fiction and comedy is always good.

Why not tell us a little more about yourself? What other interests do you have? Sport, music, etc.

I'd say that dark fiction and comedy are good in my books too, although I don't read as much of them. I too like historical fiction, and a lot of the stuff I write seems to cross over in that territory (I write a lot of steampunk), and a lot of stuff I've been writing lately has been set in a pseudo-1930's setting. (I have a big interest in history, especially the early 20th century, what with both Great Wars.) I wouldn't say that I really write historical fiction, but I definatley draw a lot of inspiration from that era.

Ok, sure.

Well, I'm not a huge sports fan, but I do love baseball (Boston Red Sox for the win! ) I've never acctually played on a team or anything, just screwing around with my friends. Other than that my idea of recreation usually involves sitting around playing Xbox. Although I do bike a reasonable ammount, so I guess that counts for something.

Like I said, I play a lot of video games (especially historical strategy; right now I'm atticted to Hearts of Iron). My future goal is to someday work in the video game industry, doing 3D art/animation work. (In addtion, of course, to becoming a published author ) I also build plastic models and play tabletop wargames and the like.

As for music, it's a bit less "generic". I'll listen to pretty much anything "as long as it's good", so my musical tastes are all over the place. I listen to a lot of indie music that no one's ever heard of, mostly involving some form of rock, punk, reggae or ska. (Or various combinations of all!) My favourite band of all time is State Radio (which also happens to be a mix of varying degrees of all the aforentioned genres); my avatar image is a variation on one of their logos. I've also played trombone for 4 years, and I'm in my school band and jazz improv group.

So, yeah, feel free to ask me any more questions about myself, and thanks for the welcome.

Edit: wait, I have a question: what's up with the points system? When I posted this it said "you spent 0 points". What does that mean?

Oh wow, that sounds like an awesome career, quite similar to what my younger brother has in mind actually. And I'm with you on the lack of interest in sport though I do quite enjoy rounders (a little like baseball), swimming and basketball. Occasionally tennis, skiing and horse riding too.

I'm not a huge fan of music though you'll be sure to find some members who have similar likes in that area. There's a usergroup called 'bank geeks' or something actually that you might be interested in joining.

The points system is to regulate posting, you spend 100 points or so posting a story, and gain points by critting other's work. so basically, you can't post over and over without earning points

I also play an instrument, but not for as long as you- I got my clarinet about a year ago. Music is great.
I'm a fantasy reader/writer, but I enjoy Sci-fi too. My favourites in that area would have to be orson scott card and Anne McCaffery- though her work sometimes borders on fantasy.
Graphics design, eh? Sounds like fun. That always interested me, but I was never good enough with a computer, or drawing something over and over.

Generic plots are rather annoying, I agree. Though I still love fantasy, I just skip the stuff that looks overdone. If you like sci-fi, I'd recommend reading Ender's Game. It's the only sci-fi I've read really, but that was because I really liked it (a bit long though =P).
