*Holds breath* I hope it's good, for the amount of time I spent on it!! Here it is, finally!!
Chapter 2
“Thanks, everyone, for coming out to watch our show. Is everyone ready for some magic?” He said the last word pointing two fingers into the crowd. As he finished, green and golden sparks erupted exactly where he pointed. As they fell, I figured out they were tiny sparkles. I looked up at the ceiling, but nothing was there anymore. These guys were good. The question was how did they get so good, so fast? They were only teens.
“Where the heck did that come from?” Gabe asked in absolute amazement, putting out his hands to catch the falling confetti.
“I thought you didn’t like magic shows,” I retorted, trying to hide my own amazement.
“Yeah, but that was awesome! I’ve never seen anything like that!” he stated, shaking his head in wonder. I smiled. He looked like he was seven again, when we were at my house playing on the jungle gym. He had always marveled at how I could do the monkey bars five times in a row before landing gracefully on my feet.
The crowd had erupted in shouts of amazement, laughter, and applause. The boy bowed humbly.
“Thank you. Before we begin, we’d like to introduce ourselves to first-timers. My name is Kaden,” he stated, bowing again as the room erupted in whistles and applause again. The boy looked to be very tall, with thick dark red hair and gray eyes that were visible even from where Gabe and I sat.
“…my name’s Rafe,” the boy on Kaden’s left continued, smiling broadly and waving as more noise exploded from the crowd. He had lighter short black hair, like the color of a raven, and dark skin. It looked like he had eyes as dark as his hair, but I couldn’t be sure because of the distance. He was taller than Kaden.
“…my name’s Venus,” the girl next to Rafe explained, giving everyone a dazzling smile and a tiny curtsy. Her hair was honey-blond, and she looked to have very fair features. She had such amazing green eyes that they could almost be compared to Gabe’s.
“…and I’m Eglantine,” the girl right of Kaden stated, waving and smiling, and the crowd detonated once again. She had long light-brown hair and very gentle brown eyes. She looked almost like a queen. Her grace and elegance radiated off of her.
The four teenagers seemed to glitter in front of me. The two girls looked like gypsies, with their flowing flowery skirts. I passed it off as a trick of the light, shining off of their clothes and jewelry.
“Are you guys ready to be amazed?” Kaden asked dramatically, spreading his arms wide and smiling.
The crowd blew again, this time louder than any before. The boy’s hands flew to his ears.
“All right, all right! Here it goes! Prepare to be shocked!” He said back, laughing a little.
Those words seemed to be a queue, because once he said it, they all moved into their positions.
There were tricks they did together, tricks they did separately, and tricks they did with volunteers from the crowd. Each one was more amazing than the next.
“Man, how are they doing that?” Gabe asked, clapping along with the crowd after another astounding trick.
“I have no idea,” I stated quietly, frowning.
I knew a bit about magic. I mean, I had read about it and performed a few tricks myself, but I’d never really got into it; I preferred watching it more than actually doing it. It seemed more real when you were observing. But what these guys were doing seemed more than just the slight of hand. Things exploded throughout the crowd, volunteers stumbled off the stage looking very confused rather than amazed, and there were tricks that almost defied the laws of gravity. Sometimes, they would be suspended above ground, but there was no sign of anything strong enough to hold them. There were several tanks, where they would lock themselves up, disappear, and then reappear on stage. What was so amazing about that was that there was no shooting out of somewhere. It was like they were actually transporting themselves. There were lots of animals involve where they seemed to change in front of your eyes. Nothing was covered with these kids. There were no handkerchiefs or small sheets. All they used were their hands.
“Okay, for my trick, I’m going to need another volunteer!” Kaden stated to the crowd. Instantly, all hands were thrown up in a silent plea that they would get picked. Without conscious thought, I threw my hand up out of spite, laughing. Gabe looked at me like I was crazy. I laughed more, and then looked at Kaden, who was staring straight at me. My eyes grew in surprise, and my hand fell instantly.
Maybe he wasn’t looking at me. Maybe it was the person in front or in back of me, I thought desperately, but something told me otherwise.
I looked back at Kaden, and he was still staring at me, but this time, he was smiling.
“The girl in the middle of the room, with the strawberry-blond hair, next to the boy with the green shirt. Yes, you!” Kaden stated, pointing at me.
Gabe stared at me, now laughing. He took my hand and pushed me out into the aisle. People were now sitting back down, looking disappointed and jealous.
I stumbled out into the aisle and shot daggers at Gabe. He only laughed more and sat back down. I walked slowly, desperately hoping I didn’t trip and make a complete fool of myself. The other three magicians were smiling and beckoning encouragingly at me. Kaden was smiling, obviously trying not to laugh.
When I finally reached the stage and stumbled up the stairs, I had to resist the urge to push him off the stage. I swallowed nervously. Thousands of shining eyes were staring up at me.
“I hate you,” I stated, not moving my lips and saying it quietly so that it didn’t reach the microphone.
“Join the club,” He stated, still smiling.
“Okay, what my new friend…”He began, leaning closer to me, as if asking for my name.
“Adalynn,” I stated through clenched teeth.
“...Adalynn is going to do, is stand over there with Venus. She’ll tell you what to do next,” He finished, pointing at her.
I stalked off, and moved next to Venus.
“Okay, what Adalynn’s going to do next is point at Rafe, and when we say go, she’s going to snap.”
“Wait, I’m supposed to do this by myself?” I whispered incredulously as she moved to back away. I shot a nervous glance at the crowd. I swallowed again.
“Don’t worry- we’ll back you up,” She stated, smiling encouragingly. I looked for anyone to come and help me. Obviously this was a set-up. They all backed away from the center stage, smiling. Kaden was laughing quietly in the shadows. I realized with anger and nervousness that nobody was going to help me.
Trying to quell my anger, I raised my hand and got ready to snap.
All four of the magicians began the countdown.
“Ready, set, go!”
I snapped feebly. I knew nothing was going to happen even before I did it.
The crowd let out a long "aww" before quieting again. I sighed angrily, feeling humiliated. I heard Kaden in the shadows still laughing. Anger bubbled up inside me again.
“Focus. Try again,” I heard Eglantine say behind me.
Before realizing what I was doing, my hand shot across my vision, completely outstretched, like I was wiping a window without a rag.
Instantly, water in the form of rain began cascading down from above Rafe. He was soaked in less than a few seconds.
But, as soon as it started, it stopped. What was so amazing was that it seemed to come from nowhere, and as I looked up, I realized that there was nowhere the water could have come from.
It was either the greatest magic trick ever created and performed, or I had made that water come from nowhere.
