Introduce Your Writing

Do you guys know the About The Author section? Basically, I want this thread to be something like that one, except with it being concentrated on the writing itself, not on the writer. Ramble, show, explain, and tell us all about it. Give details, your writing deserves it!

Here are a few pointers, not in any particular order: Topic of first story/novel, previous story/novel, current story/novel; published?; finished?; genre: fantasy, romance, horror etc,?; time periods?; short descriptions; cast, characters; by what it is inspired? etc.

Add, say, and go on and on about anything you want, as long as it concerns your previous/current writing projects. Give titles and feel free to add some links if you want, perhaps with a short description of what it is about.

Okay, I'll go first.

Topic of first story/novel:

My first story ever??? Wow. Um...That would have to be "The Adventures of Jack Frost" which I wrote when I was five. I think I got down two pages. My first novel would be your typical fantasy gig. Boy lives in small town, boy's town is ransacked, boy's Uncle gives him a fantastic magical object and sends him on a quest half way acrossed the "country", boy runs into trouble along the way, finds himself, etc., etc. I think that particular project spanned over 600 written pages, in three seperate journals before it fizzled out. I just got bored. Needless to say, I've never touched fantasy since.

previous story/novel

My most recent story would be "The Oil Fields Are Burning" ( TOFAB ) which is about a fuel cell company which decides to eradicate all petroleum based competition by destroying a Middle Eastern oil monopoly with the help of an assassin. Intiquing, huh? It's a three-part here on YWS. If you'd like to read it, it's in my portfolio. I've sent this story to four different literary journals, one of which is the Young Writers Journal, and have gotten two rejection slips back. Still waiting for the other two.... My previous novel is a SF story about clones called "Pastless". This is also a typical, follow-the-yellow-brick-template type of story. It fizzled out after 200 written pages.

current story/novel

Right now, I'm writing an action/adventure novel called "Honor" which is about a member of a chinese Tong (the chinese-american version of the mafia) who begins having second thoughts about his membership. Throughout the course of the story, the MC finds out about a terrorist plot his Tong is participating in to gas a Los Angelean airport with a genetically engineered version of the black plague. And he becomes uniquely entwined in the whole mess. It's in the action/adventure forum and in my featured works if you'd care to check it out. It's probably my best work, but I'm sure I've said that about all my other failed projects. I'm thinking it'll end up 60,000 words when I finish it, which will hopefully be before New Year's.

Yes, I know - what I wanted is something smaller, something not quite like starting your own thread. Something that you write once, can edit if you need, but don’t necessarily maintain. Just for it to be there :) It doesn't neccesarily have to work out, though.

Topic of first story/novel:,

Uhm... The Tribe of the Hawk XD I was 10 and it was about elves. very cool :D i read through it sometimes, its actually pretty long, but lacks quality whatsoever ! ! oh well i was young :D

previous story/novel

I've written a lot of stories, such as The Power of Menobyr, The Power of Menobyr : Dark Moonlight, and The Power of Menobyr: In The End. meant to be a trilogy and i wrote A LOT on it. hundreds of frickin pages.
i dont know why i gave up on it but i guess i lost interest. Also short stories, most of which are on the boards; such as : Accidental Felony, Panic, Crazy! and The Stranger She Once Knew.

current story/novel;
The Darkness Within.
Basically the main character, Jess, runs away from an abusive home life with her mom, siblings and stepdad. She leaves her younger brother and sister behind and finds herself a new home. With a bunch of teens.
Then the trouble kicks in, her past is explained, and we see the events that shook up her life a year and a half prior to her running away.
Then people start to die.
LOL it becomes pretty grim and mysterious and everything. Chapter one and 2 are on the boards in case anyone wants to read it.

published
Only in the school magazine and yearbook :D in both cases i was the editor or editor-in-chief XD :D lol

finished?
Never 100% finished a story to be honest.

genre
mystery, crime, horror, dark things.

ime periods?;
modern day :D
except for my old story The Tribe of the Hawk which was somewhere in 1605 or something :D

Characters:
My all time fave is Jess, the main character of The Darkness Within. I LOVE HER XD lol
She's outspoken, independant, a good fighter ( ) and much more.
Then there's Jason, who is THE PERFECT GUY in my eyes
if only he was real

LOL this is a fun topic !!

Hey!

Current story/novel;

Well, this is my first novel, so I guess this is the only sub-heading to write about. It is a high fantasy novel, set in my own world, currently unnamed. I try not to draw attention to the stereotypical monster enemies, or vast fantasy world, rather the MC, Aedomir. He is great, and is what the novel is all about. It follows an adventure of the lost exile, after he wakes up from a deep slumber, 1000 years after touching a waterfall. He is drowned in sorrow as he tries to find his company of old, through beauty and fire.

Currently, I am at around 22000 words, rewriting the first 10000. I aiming for around the 200k mark, possibly less/more.

My first story/novel
My first short story was in 3rd grade for a science project, it was really fun, actually. my first novel was titled A Broken Trance, and is currently unfinished. (I stopped writing it at the very end, so now I'm working on finishing it and rewriting it). I'm hoping that the first version is at least 24k, enough to be considered a novella or a short story.
Current story/novel
The current piece I am writing about is called Family Tree, a revenge story, with my friend. It has 240 something pages. The genre is horror, something that we both love to write. Family Tree is almost done! Part 13! : )

Budding Author: I don't think publishers can not publish a book because of your age, but its best if you try and get short stories, poems, and other things published before, and get an agent. They may not take you seriously,so make sure your book is the best it is. Good Luck!
I realized that I said I'd be gone for only two weeks...but I was gone for much longer.I hope to stay on this time. :)

Hey, this is a good idea! :D

First story:
Sarah in Pink and Purple Land. Yeah, it's pretty self-explanatory.

First REAL story:
The Keys. I started the first one when I was nine and finished when I was about 11, and I was convinced it was the best piece of writing on the planet. I followed the first one with three more full-length novels before I realized that the first one was crap and I was going to have to re-work the whole series. Actually I'd really love to rewrite them someday - they have a nice storyline: Three kids who are given keys that unlock the minds and hearts of lost souls, parallel universe kind of thing. But it's going to require a lot of thinking and all my thought is focused on Firebrand right now.

Current Story:
Firebrand - first in a trilogy, I think.

For two years now Marc has dreamed of fire. The nightmares that began when she was fifteen continued through her junior year of high school and the painful move to a sleepy town in Colorado.

After an accident leaves Marc with stitches in her skull and strange hallucinations, her nightmares begin to invade reality.

In our world, Marc fights with fainting spells, headaches, nausea, and voices that tug her into fitful dreams. In the world of her hallucinations, she battles a dark disease that is slowly polluting her body - and the only cure is found with a stoic young man and the Fire he offers.

Ideas Rolling Around in My Brain:
Defective - a world where beauty is bred and anyone who doesn't measure up is cut out.
The Keys - Already explained this. :D
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness - the story of a shy, slightly quirky homeschooled girl going to high school for the first time. Complications arise. Hilarity ensues.

Stuff I'm Good At:
Fantasy. Dream sequences. Flashbacks. Sarcasm. Subtle romance - boy meets girl, boy can't stand girl, boy and girl find something in common, boy doesn't hate girl quite so much anymore. Think anti-Stephenie Meyer. :D

Stuff I Suck At:
Mysteries. Serial-killer-horrors. Intelligent sci-fi. Characters who don't like talking (*coughJakecough*)
“We’re still here,” he says, his voice cold, his hands shaking. “We know how to be invisible, how to play dead. But at the end of the day, we are still here.” ~Dax

First Novel

My first story was called The Chronicles of Pyra: Rise of the Phoenix (some of its posted here but it was written when I was ten, so my grammar is horrible.) Well anyways, its about this girl named Lily, who finds out she's from another planet. She then goes on this quest to save the magic world, find her family, and ultimately herself. Its basically an Fantasy/Adventure/Romance kind of book but I never finished it. I'm thing about trying to fix up because its like five hundred pages long but I am to busy with countless other stories.
This was basically inspired by my love of fantasy and I hope to get it published one day, when its fixed up.

Previous Novel
My previous novel is called Cupid's Arrow. I only got done with one chapter and about half of the second chapter. I was inspired to write it because of my love for vampires and romance. Basically, its about this Princess named Esperanza who falls in love with Cupid, who is a vampire, and Aaron, a guy who plays an important role in this story. If you want to check it out its in my portfolio, I might post links here soon.

Current Novels

My farther advanced novel is In the Land of Harmony which is also posted on here. I started working on it about the same time I created Cupid's Arrow which was about five months ago. I recently decided to expand on it because my friends at school read the first chapter and they loved it. Right now, I have four chapters and an Intro that I am really proud of. Its about this girl named Francesca who becomes a young actress, everything seems to be going to right for her, until Leo, her boyfriend breaks up with her. Then, this mysterious guy shows up and literally sweeps her up off of her feet. My inspiration for this was my blog, and my love for vampires, love, and fantasy. Its a story that teaches the meaning of love, lost, and light.

The book that I started working on yesterday is basically just a time filler, but I might get it published one day, Its called The Jane Effect and its about this girl named Elizabeth Jane Greenly, who is a smart young woman who is forced to marry Mr. William James Harvey, a rich twenty-five year old man, to help bring money and honor to her family. Later, Elizabeth discovers that Mr. Harvey is only marrying her to make Maxine, her younger sister jealous. When William wants a divorce, her pride is pretty much destroyed and she feels that she can't show her face around town or anywhere else, again. I will not tell anything more because I have already given away too much. This story is basically about finding new love and moving on after life gives you a bucket of sour grapes. What inspired me to write it is the fact that I'm intrigued by the classics such as Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice. Please, if you love 18th century English romances then check out The Jane Effect.
True love, in all it’s celestial charm, and
star-crossed ways, only exist in a writer’s
mind, for humans have not yet learned
how to manifest it.

First story/novel:
ok, so my first story was on my first day of school. It pretty much said that my cat eats catfood (or something of the sort) and pretty much looks like this "jwyuxxzzz kitty hujasguieb eats" (i was a strange, strange child). My first *actual* story was about a city split by a wall and the system tht stopped anyone from getting inside.

Previous story/novel:
Grace Under Pressure - Basically about a woman whose husband is a dirty little cheater.

Current story/novel:
Currently untitled, about a girl who gets turned in to hospital by her boyfriend and how the betrayl that "ruins" her life.

Published:
None...pretty sad really...I think my problem is that I never let anyone read my work...(i'm working up the courage to post something on here.)

Genre:
Micro-fiction/flash-fiction, usually dark, and involving the death of a main character.

Time periods?
Present day and future. I guess the time period isn't really a pivotal part of my work.
It usually takes me about two hours to complete the first draft of a story. Then i revisit it every day for 3 days. Then i leave it for a week. Then I leave it for a month. Then i usually forget about it and discover it in my computer 6 months later...

Characters:
Emmi, the crazy (OCD?), stunningly beautiful, "escape artist" (read:pain killer addict), she fully consumes every single minute in which I am not consciously thinking... I really must finish her story so that she'll leave me alone!!

Inspiration:

Sometimes other people's writing. I'll read something really amazing and think 'if they can do that good, then surely I can write a page of *something*'. Usually though, a paragraph will just pop into my head and once i type it out a whole story just unfolds with minor conscious input form me...

Wowee! This sounds fun! Thanks of thinking of it, Esme!

FIRST STORY EVER
It was when I was about 6 when I started it. Basically, this was a mashed up story, big time. The only things that were revelant were that the people were sexy wizards. I had everything happen from falling in love to going back in time...let's see, what else...oh, and the dialogue sucked.

FIRST NOVEL STARTED
This was when I was in fourth grade--I don't know really. Anyways, this was a basic cross between Confessions of a Teen Drama Queen (which I loved at the time) and The Haunted Mansion. Romance, drama and war. Yayers! I got to 36 pages before I quit

CURRENT NOVEL
This isn't really a novel, more like a novella. I had the idea at camp and started scribbling things down in my notebook while conferring with someone who is a published author. It's basically a horror novel about an insane asylum. Questions?
And we'll be a dream...

Topic of first story/novel:,

Oh I don't know.I wrote a lot of short stories. But I had my first idea for my series The Realm when I was in second year so I was...13? I'm still working on that one now.

previous story/novel

I have a heap of short stories, theres the one about cinderella after her "ending" called Happily Ever After. There was one I wrote in school called Eden, about (surprise surprise) Adam and eve and the Fall. There was one called Via Dolores which I'm pretty proud of which is about Mary Magdalene's (fictional) niece and the crucifiction. Might upload that at some point actually.

current story/novel;

Okay well there is the Realm series, Five novels, none of which are fully planned or written even though I've been working on them for three years. Its a fantasy series follwing the gypsy daughter Myarii, focussing on family relationships and dysfunction with a typical fantasy backdrop.

Then I had the idea for Frozen. And started that too. Its a standalone novel, a science fiction version of Sleeping Beauty where she is cryogenically frozen for a hundred years. Wow that sounds tacky. Its not, I don't think. Anyway its way fun, its sort of cyberpunk and funky, and i love inventing the new technology.

Time periods?;
Most of my shorts are modern day. The Realm is set millions of years in the past, in the first evolution before all the magic was burned away, and Frozen is set in the 4400's

Characters:

My favourites are Hath and Evandar from the Realm and Neth from Frozen. Hath is a robin hood type, used to be part of the royal guard, a thief, pickpocket with blood red hair and a secret- he's actually a dalverine, wolf person. Ev is a bastard prince who keeps himself to himself, he's quirky and a bit weird with a pet snake with wings on its head, he works in a blacksmith's forge and has the power to transport himself to any moment in time for eight heartbeats.

Neth is my overall favourite. He's a complete twat, user, womanizer, good looking charming and completely inconsiderate. He gets all my best jokes. And meets his match in Trinai, his best friend's betrothed, and falls for her.

Wow that was long. Sorry guys.
Is this bass REALLY strong enough?

First Story: A Short Story Entitled A Beggar's Tale - the beggar in question was Merlin, reduced to a wreck of a human, listless on the streets of modern London.

Currently:

I'm always working on a variety of short stories and projects. So, I won't go on listing all of them, both previous and current. But I will mention my first and only novel in progress:

Shadow of the Sun:

A novel/la in progress. Set in the City - the largest, and according to the inhabitants, only metropolis left in a poisoned, inhospitable world. Protected by massive, sorcerous walls, it is a dark place filled with its own share of monsters and demons, most of which exist in the Outskirts - a ghetto like area mainly outside the control of the Council and Magisterium.

The tenuous peace that exists between the two is about to be shattered by one ambitious Magister who intends to claim the last remaining seat on the Council. His campaign to eradicate and control the Outskirts has unprecedented success, that is to say, until his men encounter Sunestraka, a creature that wipes out an elite squadron and takes hostage the young boy they used as bait.

The story basically centres around the boy and the monster and the way they become friends; the evolution of their relationship amidst escalating violence. The Underground, stirred out of its slumber by the increasing raids against their number, is not prepared to lay down and die, however. In a world full of magic and technology, monsters, soldiers, psychics, witches and creatures of myth, some new and some old, the clash between man and monster for supreme dominance is about to reach a whole new level.

*

If you are interested, the first couple of chapters can be found in my portfolio. Also, my project 'Strands of Darkness' has been published in the Young Writers Journal and another, 'Borderline' was published in a literary ezine, Pens On Fire - I have been shortlisted for publication twice, most recently in the Read by Dawn, v.III - an international horror anthology.
Mah name is jiggleh. And I like to jiggle.

Previous Stories: I've attempted quite a few novels since I began writing, and I don't think most of them were all that great to begin with. :? The first story ever that I tried to write isn't even here on YWS. I'm not sure if it had a title, but it was about a girl named Celeste who had psychic powers and she somehow meets up with a red-haired guy named Ray and then stuff happens. :/

Then there was The Deafening Rainfall, which was the first story I ever posted here. It was about a female warrior who lived in some kingdom I made up who entered a contest to become the next great warrior protecter of the land. I actually wrote a lot on this one, but eventually I hit a brick wall and just stopped writing. I don't think I ever attempted it again after that.

Then there was Why (Later to become the Oil Mark) which was set in some universe where people were split into normal people and outcasts. The main character was this strange boy who seemed to have unexplainable powers, and the things he did to try to change the world around him. But eventually the plot bored me and I gave up (this happened twice).

I've also written a number of micellaneous shorter things, which I don't feel like listing...

Current Stories: The current novel I'm working on is entitled A Winter Memory, which is simply the tragic tale of a mother searching for her lost daughter in a forest during the winter. It's somewhat dark and fantastical, and is a novel I simply can't get out of my head. It's a slow process at the moment, but I'm determined to write this one no matter how long it takes. This actually started out as a short story, but I could never feel that it was fully realized in that form, so I eventually took it on as a novel.

Novel-wise I'm not working on anything else, but I do dabble in some short-story stuff now and again. :P
