Certain Twilights: A Mix for YWS This is really dedicated to Nate, and in conjecture Big Brother because hey, we would not have YWS without them, and as such deserve lots and lots of cookies. The other day I was on a run, listening to some music, and though “I should make a writing themed mix”, and so I have. I quite like how the cover art turned out. The title ‘Certain Twilights’ is from this quote by Jorge Luis Borges: “Music, feelings of happiness, mythology, faces worn by time, certain twilights and certain places, want to tell us something, or they told us something that we should not have missed, or they are about to tell us something; this imminence of a revelation that is not produced is, perhaps, the esthetic event.” If there are any problems with the downloading shout out to me and I'll see what I can do. A Theme from A Fistful of Dollars [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] From my favorite composer ever, Ennio Moriconne, this is the musical equivalent to this image I have in my head of YWSer’s as outlaws and cowboys in the Old West. 3. Pay Attention/In a World of My Own from Alice in Wonderland [ box link ] all the flowers would have very extra special powers they would sit and talk to me for hours Because most often writers live in a world of their own, and something about this song in particular and it being from Alice in Wonderland makes me think of really far out poetry. 4. The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny by Lemon Demon [ box link ] This is the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny! Good guys, bad guys, and explosions As far as the eye can see. And only one will survive, I wonder who it will be? This is the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny. I love this song, makes me laugh every time I hear it. For YWS Geekdom. 5. I am a Rock by Simon & Garkfunkel [ box link ] I am a rock, I am an island. I have my books And my poetry to protect me. Another song about the insularity of the art of writing. 6. Puttin' On the Style by The Chad Mitchell Trio [ box link ] Young man just back from college makes a big display With a fancy adjective that he can hardly say It can’t be found in Webster, and won't be for a while But everybody knows he's only puttin’ on the style. Because we talk a good game, and for all those newbies out there, you youngsters. :wink: This was song that got me thinking about making this mix in the first place. 7. Dangling Conversation by Dar Williams ft. Joan Baez [ box link ] And you read your Emily Dickinson, And I my Robert Frost, And we note our place with bookmarkers That measure what we've lost. A cover of a very, very good Simon & Garfunkel song. But hey, Simon & Garfunkel is always excellent in my book. 8. The Engine Driver by The Decemberists [ box link ] And I am a writer, writer of fictions I am the heart that you call home And I've written pages upon pages Trying to rid you from my bones An ode to our characters, especially those who become real to you and a part of your soul. 9. The Death of Girl Number Two by Say Hi to Your Mom [ box link ] …she's been inhabited by an oddly whimsical creature. She was a marionette to its hand. Another song for characters. 10. Life on Mars by David Bowie [ box link ] Take a look at the Lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars? Erm, favorite Bowie song of mine, it just screamed YWS to me. 11. Baby Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] A lovely instrumental by my second favorite composer Henry Mancini. 12. The USS Make Shit Up by Voltaire [ box link ] and i say 'bounce a graviton particle beam off the main deflector dish.' 'that's the way we do things, lad, we're making shit up as we wish.' the klingons and the romulans, pose no threat to us cuz if we find we're in a bind, we just make some shit up For the geeks in all of us and because writing is a lot about making shit up as you go along. 13. Kitten is Angry by Lemon Demon [ box link ] My kitten knows TAE KWON DO. She can take you out, I know. A song for SPEW. Kitten, anyone? 14. Violin Sequence from The Godfather [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] Well I found a song for SPEW, so that meant I rather should find one for CCF. So here is CCF’s theme song. This is by Ennio Moriconne and I think it rather fits the mob/Mafioso front that CCF projects. 15. Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby by Islands [ box link ] total void tells me stories sometimes they make me sorry but i need another i need another sugar dumpling muffin baby this world is going crazy i think i'm through listening to you An odd song that I really, really enjoy listening to, for all that inspiration that comes from the black. 16. Comptine D'Un Autre Été: L'Après-midi by Yann Tiersen [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] Lovely summer’s day interlude song, great for inspiration. The title roughly translates to Another Rhyme for Summer. 17. Mr. Writer by Stereophonics [ box link ] Mr Writer, why don't you tell it like it is? 18. A Perfect Sonnet by Bright Eyes [ box link ] But I guess I'll have to settle for a few brief moments And watch all dissolve into a single second And try to write it down into a perfect sonnet Or one foolish line. 19. Swinging London by The Magnetic Fields [ box link ] I read your manifestoes and your strange religious tracts. You took me to your library and kissed me in the stacks. 20. March of the Sinister Ducks by Sinister Ducks [ box link ] Everyone thinks they're such sweet little things Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack! Soft downy feathers and nice little wings. Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack! Random, ridiculous, yet funny song that I just thought I’d add in here. 21. Pink Panther Theme by Henry Mancini [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] This song makes me smile. 22. Walt Whitman's Niece by Billy Bragg and Wilco [ box link ] And it takes a night and a girl and a book of this kind A long, long time to find its way back. 23. Ode to Crayola by Lemon Demon [ box link ] Outrageous Orange, Laser Lemon, and Jungle Green. That's what I said. Wild Watermelon, Midnight Blue, Atomic Tangerine... Radical Red, Sky Blue, and Shamrock too, and Gold so true it glows. I love the Razzmatazz, and Purple Pizazz, and Razzle Dazzle Rose. Had to add this song, no way around that. 24. The Grey Wolf/Gevudan from Le Pacte de Loups [ box link ] [ Instrumental ] From my favorite movie of all time, The Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte de Loups), the music from it is very inspiring. 25. Hoist the Colours by Hans Zimmer [ box link ] Yo, ho, haul together hoist the colours high heave ho, thieves and beggars never shall we die. Because ya can’t kill us. :P Enjoy, Cal.
