Jon walked through the corridors casually avoiding students who were sat on the ground eating they’re lunches. Jon couldn’t hear what they were saying and truly didn’t care. He hadn’t made any friends at this new school and had taken solitude in his iPod. Right now the tune blasting into his ears was Drinkin’ by Reel Big Fish. Jon pushed open a door and entered a small area of grass, no students could be seen and Jon smiled.
This area, Jon had discovered, was off limits to students but no teacher actually came in here and the odd one that did, didn’t care that Jon was sat here. Throwing his bag down Jon dropped to the grass. Clouds were flitting over head in the strong wind, but here in this small grass area, that was boxed in by walls keeping the cold wind at bay.
The music stopped abruptly and Jon pulled his iPod from his pocket. “Damnit!” He said aloud. No battery. It was media next and now he would be forced to listen to those idiots who thought going out getting drunk and getting busted by the police was, Fun. A sound caused him to look over at the small door he had entered.
A girl just a few inches shorter than Jon with long black hair entered. She seemed to be crying. Jon hated crying girls; he never knew what to do. Though he recognised this one from his media class. Standing Jon moved towards her.
“Hey, err. Are you all right?” The girl looked up. She hadn’t seen Jon and his sudden appearance gave her a small fright. “Your Nikki right?”
The girl nodded. Jon stopped he was still a few metres away from her. Nikki regained her composure, wiped her eyes and looked at Jon.
“Sorry about that. It’s just…” She looked away.
“It’s all right. I don’t know you and you don’t know me. Therefore you don’t have to explain yourself.” Jon replied after a few seconds.
“You’re the new kid Jon aren’t you?”
“That is my name.” The girl smiled at Jon. Her smile made her face light up and she looked beautiful.
“Why are you in here? I used to come here when I was upset but I don’t much anymore.”
“I don’t really have any friends yet. So I come here and quietly listen to my iPod.”
“I’ll be your friend.” She moved forward. “I don’t know you yet so we need to talk.”
She pushed past Jon and threw her bag down beside his. Of all the friendships Jon had made in the past few years this was the strangest start to one. Jon sat next to her.
Jon pulled his bag to him and removed a mars bar. Opening it he broke a piece off and handed it to Nikki. She mumbled “Thanks.”
“Where do you come from, Jon?”
“Scotland.”
“Really, where about?”
“Originally Inverness, but I lived in Aberdeen for four years before coming here.” Nikki squealed and flapped her arms. Jon laughed.
“My grandparents live in Aberdeen. I love it. All those old buildings and the way they look after it rains.” Jon smiled, he loved the rain. The bell for lessons rang and Jon stood.
“We aren’t in our usual Media room. I’ll take you to where we are.” Jon nodded.
“Thanks.” She smiled as if it was no big thing

Jon searched through his bag. He couldn’t find his damn keys. Giving up Jon sat on the doorstep of his house. The house was huge, Jon disliked it because of this. He had his own two rooms at the top of the house, one had a sofa and a T.V in it and the other a bed and a wardrobe. Jon sighed, his mum was working late again and his dad was away on business.
Reaching into his pocket he removed some change. Four pounds twenty five. Tescos was only a five minute walk away. Looking at his watch he checked the time. Half past three, another seven hours until his mum returned. Standing Jon began his walk.
He strolled uncaringly down the various streets. His mind kept drifting back to his last lesson, for the first time since he had begun that school Jon had enjoyed a lesson. Nikki was not only good looking but funny and her taste in music was brilliant. She liked the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and Misfits. All of Jon’s favourite bands.
He arrived at Tescos and walked through the wide doors. The weird security guard stared at Jon, he supposed it was the way he was dressed. Un-tucked shirt, no tie and an ancient hoody covered in patches. Jon didn’t care that much, why would he?
At the sandwich isle Jon decided on a chicken and bacon sandwich, a bottle of coke and a packet of onion rings. He bought it and was leaving when a familiar voice called his name. Spinning he watched as Nikki ran towards him.
She was wearing a pair of black jeans and a tight fitting white Sex Pistols t-shirt. She stopped short of him and smiled.
“Why haven’t you changed from your school clothes?” She demanded.
“I’m locked out of my house. I’ve lost my keys.” Jon smiled. Nikki looked away. “I will be hanging out in the front of my house until ten.” Nikki’s face shot to his.
“Come and to mine. My dad won’t mind.” Jon looked at her dubiously.
“I only met you today Nikki…”
“I don’t care. You’re my friend and your coming round mine. Let’s go find my dad.” She took hold of Jon’s hand and pulled him after her. Her hand felt small and warm in Jon’s. It mad Jon happy for some strange reason.
