Chapter 15
-Finally Free
The entire ride home was spent in laughter, as was the walk into the house. Everything was funny for some reason, Jamie figured she had finally lost it.
But that has it's good sides as well.
“Where the fuck were you?” Richard demanded when she got to her room, “I've been waiting here for nearly an hour.”
Jamie looked at him, trying furiously to conceal her laughter, succeeding
only in a bunch of short hiccups.
“Useless bitch,” her father muttered.
“Useless?” Jamie asked, “because you seem to have found a lot of use in
me this past month.” Her words weren't angry, or even laughing. They were
flat, void of emotion, even though on the inside she was still a laughing
hyena.
“Yeah, but what use are you if you aren't here when I need you?” Richard
practically spit the words at her. A small laugh made it's way from her lungs.
“Why don't you find someone else to bug?” She asked, walking across the
room to put her back against a wall. This way it was harder for him to push
her to the ground, just in case.
“Because I haven't gotten what I want yet,” he licked his lips. Disgusting.
“Neither have I. You haven't left yet,” Jamie pointed out, pushing herself
harder against the wall, willing it to let her through. Fear finally made it's
way to her heart, spreading with her blood.
“Why haven't you gotten that I don't care?” Richard said.
“Same question!” Jamie said, throwing her arms up and freeing her back
from the wall.
“Oh you care,” Richard said, “you care enough to avoid me, you care
enough to write it down in that fucking book of yours, you care enough to
cry.”
“Everybody has their faults, Richard. Would you like a list of yours?”
“Don't call me Richard, bitch.”
Jamie pushed herself back against the wall as he walked toward her.
“Don't call me Bitch, Richard.”
Now furious Richard lunged at her, she jumped to the side at the last
second, just as his considerable bulk hit the wall. The floor shook with it's
force.
Jamie sprinted to the door, leaving her room and pushing all of her weight
to close the door, preparing for the moment it would fly open. In her room
she heard as Richard recovered from the shock of hitting the wall and
started with heavy footsteps to the door. He turned the knob, Jamie
pushed harder as he tried to open it.
The door opened in slits, each one getting bigger as she lost momentum.
It fell closed with a loud thud as Richard let it go. Jamie jumped back and
grabbed a chair from where it rested against the wall. She moved back to
where she could be hidden by the door when it opened.
Richard slammed into the door, Jamie threw the chair with all her might as
the it flew open, hitting her side with a thud.
Richard flew down the stairs, assuming Jamie had gone that way as well.
Quietly she fled to her dark room, finding her last bit of solace in that small
familiarity. Taking the chair from her desk she wedged the door shut. One
last move of desperation before she broke down into shaking tears.
Her back hit the wall as she slid to the floor large tears forcing their way out
of her as loudly as they could. She shook with every breath, her nerves
twitched and her lungs ached for air. Despite everything her body refused to
quiet down, and she wasn't the only one to notice.
Richard was running full force up the stairs, getting closer with her every
heaving sob.
Fight or flight.
Fight or flight.
She choose flight again. With her last but of energy she scrambled away
from the door to the window, turning to take one last look at darkness
before ripping the curtains down and letting light flood into the room for the
first time in years.
Richard reached the top of the stairs as Jamie shoved the window open.
She swung one leg over the sill, followed it by her other, they dangled over
open air. A straight shot down two stories. Impossible.
Rage filled her as she let out a long ragged scream. It filled the air, adding
another layer of anguish to the fucked up world she resided on.
With one hand she reached over and put her hand on the top of a
protruding rock on the house, with her other hand she gripped the
windowsill easing her legs down. One foot found a small place to rest
between two other rocks as the other scrambled to grip the surface.
Richard was in her room now, running to the window. Jamie carefully moved
a few feet down before he saw her and turned to run back downstairs.
With a jump and a jolt Jamie landed on the front lawn, her legs screaming
in disapproval, but otherwise unharmed. She sprinted toward her car, glad
her keys were still in her pocket and the doors unlocked. The front door of
the house opened as she closed and locked the doors, encasing herself in
thin aluminum. Her hands shook as she scrambled to get the key in the
ignition, with a small click it slid in, tuning with ease.
“Bitch, get out of the car!” Richard yelled furiously, across the lawn.
Jamie pressed down on the gas pedal too hard, and the car backed up with
a screech, slamming on the brakes made another screech. For the life of
her she couldn't drive.
Richard reached the driver's side door and tried shoving his hand through
it. The glass cracked menacingly, spider webbing as he pulled back for a
second shot.
Jamie pushed down on the gas easier and backed up quickly as his hand
hit air, throwing him across the hood of the car. He rolled to ground cursing
furiously as Jamie sped away.
Finally free.
