The day after my Mom got arrested Rob decided that he would invite his ‘date’ over for dinner, to avoid any more trouble. When the door opened this time I very nearly fainted from absolute shock, not fear of being murdered. There on our door porch stood a slim figure, short black hair, deep green eyes. A sturdy handshake. This just wasn’t right. Rob rested his hand gently on my shoulder.
“Jamiy, this is Chris.” His eyes glistened at the stranger in the doorway. Rob was seeing another man. Chris was strangely handsome, he had dressed for the occasion, dark denim jeans, snappy black shoes and a casual but smart white shirt. I took an immediate dislike to him because of this. As we sat at the dinner table Chris and Rob engaged in an in depth conversation which I felt so detached from. It seemed so forced and false when Chris directed his questions at me.
“So Jamiy, Rob tells me that you had a bit of a bad day yesterday. How are you feeling now?” His mouth was sagging slightly to the left side, I was almost certain that his food was going to dribble out. It didn’t.
“I feel ill.” I let my eyes wander across his face, deliberately letting him know that he was the source of my sudden illness. Rob nudged my leg under the table, he gave me the ‘be nice’ stare that he was almost famous for.
“May I leave the table?” I stood, knocking my knees like Mom did the night before. I didn’t wait for an answer, I simply walked out the kitchen, keeping my back to them I went to my room. To be honest I was quite upset that Rob didn’t come running after me to check that I was ok. He stayed down there with that big headed boyfriend of his, probably kissing him and doing god knows what, I didn’t even want to think about it. Instead I sneaked across to Robs bedroom, the phone was in there. I carefully dialled Sappy’s number, the voice on the end of the line was that of her Dads.
“Ok Jamiy, I will get her for you.” He seemed somewhat annoyed that I called, I glanced at the wooden clock on the wall, half past ten, that’s probably why.
“Oi.” Sappy’s voice rang through my ear.
“Sorry I know its late.” I murmured before drifting off into my thoughts again.
“What’s wrong?” She was tapping the phone, the tapping was louder than her voice.
“Rob is gay, his boyfriend is sitting downstairs at our table eating.”
“Eating what?” Sappy laughed. I found the situation extremely not amusing.
“Dinner. My Mom got arrested yesterday.”
“Why what for?”
“She went crazy and threw her body around the kitchen. And now Rob is gay. God I feel like dying.”
“Do you reckon that’s why they got divorced maybe?”
“No…” Yes I did, it was all clear now. “How could you be married and have a kid when your really gay? That’s stupid.”
“Not really. Anyway, can we talk about this tomorrow, just go to sleep and in the morning talk to Rob, I will see you on Monday, just my Mom wants me off of the phone.” She sighed heavily, I could almost feel her breath tickle me through the receiver.
“Ok, talk to you Monday then. Bye.”
“Bye!” She clunked down the phone, I wanted to run around her house, leap through her bedroom window and sob into her hair, her gorgeous hair. But I knew I couldn’t do that, instead I crept back across the landing and wrapped my self in my duvet. I could hear their laughter downstairs.
I let my bottom lip drop into a pout. I deliberately forced myself to make my eyes widen, weather that was making me look more ‘cute’ or just plain scary I wasn’t sure, either in that particular instance would have worked. Rob was trying to explain about this Chris guy, and it turned out in fact that he had been seeing him for a while, even when he was with Clarice. His words were mixing around in my ears and all I could concentrate on was the ticking of my watch. It was ticking far too loudly for it to be normal and it was drawing all my attention towards it. It saved me some what as I didn’t want to hear about Rob’s lurid love story. I just felt dizzy, his words and my watch were not mixing. I wanted to start again, with a new family it seemed that my life had got so many complications within it that it would just be easier to start again.
Maybe…maybe Mom was right, maybe I should have gone back with her to live with her new rich husband, he could have bought me those shiny shoes I saw in town. I would give anything for my Mom and real Dad to still be together, back when you are little you are so oblivious to the problems surrounding you that life is simply perfect. Little do you know that the real world is looming around the corner, waiting at your next birthday to jump out and take over. It was my birthday that he left…my Dad. He woke me up, whispered ‘Happy Birthday’ in my ear and handed me a small box. He told me not to open it until later so I giggled and tucked it under my pillow. It turned out that I was never to open that box. It worried me that the thing that slept inside was something Dad desperately wanted me and only me to have. I didn’t want anything from him. Seeing my Mom crying alone on her bed woke me up to realisation that people just hurt each other, nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes, life is against you and no matter how hard you try to understand why. You will never find answer. You have to keep your head high and keep going. Maybe I should put that into practise.
“Are you ok with all this Jamiy?” What did it matter if I wasn’t, he wasn’t going to leave Chris. His hand was resting on top of mine, his veins poking out again.
“Will he be here a lot?” His grip tightened.
“If its ok with you? Is it?” His voice was desperate. I noticed how small my hand was compared to him. I was thin anyway, too thin, my hands looked almost skeletal under his, he could easily break my hand if he wanted to, he could probably break my whole body. Snap.
“I…I well…I don’t want to share you.” I looked at his eyes, the pupils were small, the light was just catching them through the gap in the curtains.
“Share me?” He smiled “Jamiy you wont have to share me, I’m all yours now.” God how I wished that was true.
“Are you sure? Its just that your all I have now…” He pulled his arm around me.
“I’m sure…listen, I need Chris to be here with me, and if he is here I can afford more things if you understand? I wont have to pay all the bills myself and buy the food and stuff. Understand? If Chris moves in then life will be much easier for us. And you will get more nice things ok?”
“Move in? You didn’t say anything about him moving in.”
“Well…yeah that’s what I was trying to say, I wanted to know that everything was ok with you.” His arm was so tight around me I was sure that he was forcing the answer that he wanted out of me with his arms.
“Ok.” And there it was, the answer. He let go of me almost straight away, he smiled and did a weird clap thing with his hands. I assumed that he was excited so I smiled and clapped my hands back at him. I felt like an idiot and I hoped he did too.
But still, his sudden happiness got me lots of gifts from town. He drove us there, his hopes high and it was amazing. He bought me my first ever ‘Twister’ ice-lolly, it was melting quickly in the sun but the juice was so fruity it made my cheeks feel funny. I found this particularly amusing but I wasn’t sure why, the sudden cold in my mouth felt good. Then I realised that I hadn’t had any ice for such a long time. This thought made me feel empty, like a big part of me had just melted away. But it was only ice right? At that moment all I wanted to do was throw myself into a giant bathtub full of ice cubes, sure it would be cold and I would probably hate it but at least there would be hundreds to melt around me. Rob had noticed my change in mood, I guess he thought it was something to do with the whole Chris thing again. I was not going to tell him the real reason. He didn’t even ask, it was something that had come between us, and not even a delicious ‘Twister’ could help it. He knew that I wasn’t really happy with the whole Chris thing, but I was not going to let him be unhappy with whatever he was planning on doing with his life. As long as Rob stayed with me then it was ok, I could get rid of Chris the long way. And that was going to me my mission.
