This is the very beginning of my novel (I'm not sure how its going to be organized yet, so that will change). Its been very lightly edited. I want to know what you thought of it. Was it interesting? Did it grab your attention? Things like that. Please point out any grammar mistakes that you see because I'm horrible with grammar. Please let me know what you thought, and I'm open to any suggestions.

The girl watched, eyes wide in fear and awe as the creature descended upon her. It was the most beautiful thing that she had ever seen, although terror clutched her and knotted the muscles in her stomach as it approached.

It was obviously human, but it kept changing. Portraying different faces, genders, and appearances. All the while it was painful for the girl to look at, she squinted her eyes to help protect them; not wanting to look away. The only light in the dark chamber was emanating from its skin, lighting up the girl’s pale face and hollow eyes.

It smiled mockingly as it looked upon the girl. At this cold look, the girl shuffled away; fear overcoming her awe.
You will listen and obey me. It's voice reverberated through her head: harsh and beautiful, burning her ears. The girl clutched her head trying to still the pounding waves that were traveling though her. She nodded, not wanting to anger it, or make it speak again causing the horrible echoes to start anew. It smiled at her wider and wider until the smile was merely a contortion of teeth. The girl shoved her fist into her mouth to muffle the scream of horror that tried to escape from her.

The soft blanket of night was settling over the still city. In past years the city would still have been alive filled with cheerful people celebrating the end of another days work. Now everybody was locked up in the relative safety of their homes by the time dusk fell. But there were always the reckless few that tested the dangers of the city.

One man was hurrying down the cobble stone street as the shadows lengthened. He stopped in front of one deserted alley. He wanted to get to the protection of his home as soon as possible, but he didn't want to risk whatever might be lurking in the shadows.

Swallowing and clutching the pendant that hung around his neck he stepped hesitantly into the shadowy alleyway. He strode down the alleyway choking down the fear that constricted his breath and screamed at him to run as fast as he could away from there.

A creature slowly awoke smelling the adrenaline and fear that passed its resting place. Its burning eyes narrowed to slits as it watched the panic-ridden figure hurry past. The creature rose to its full height, and crept along the wall until it overtook the man and was well ahead of him. It waited at the end of the alley while the man approached it. Its eyes burning a chaotic red as the man came nearer. The shadows that it seemed to be made of were boiling and shifting in the creatures frenzied excitement.

The man stopped dead in his tracks. He had reached the end of the alley.
"Goddess, help me," he whispered, his face ashen, knuckles white over the pendant he clutched. He turned and started to run the other way tripping and stumbling over his own feet in his terror.

The shadow thing, seeing that its prey was trying to escape, lunged at the man. He had time for one soft scream before he was completely enveloped by the angrily rolling shadows. The shadows eventually slowed as the thing sat without moving, slowly digesting its meal. Some time passed before the creature finally moved and returned to its hiding place dozing patiently.

Jenilyn sat with her knees resting on her chin while she watched the weak flickering flame that ate away at the candle stub. Her mother was humming quietly to herself, eyes glassy and staring but not seeing. Jenilyn's brother, Rion, was gone. He always left, sometimes it seemed like minutes and others hours. The constant dark had warped Jenilyn’s perception of time.

"Mother?" Jenilyn asked. A stutter in the quiet humming was her only reply. Jenilyn sighed, she hadn't heard her mother talk rationally in years or maybe it was days. It was impossible to tell.

A stuttering light appeared in the distance. Jenilyn sat up and watched its slow approach eagerly. Three shadows were illuminated. A small smile broke on her face as she recognized her brother. The other two were the soldiers or servants -- Jenilyn didn't know exactly what their role was -- who always escorted him away and back. The two men were whispering quietly, sneaking glances at Jenilyn as soon as she was visible.

Jenilyn wanted to throw herself into her brothers arms, but she resisted the impulse. Instead she stared at the two men. She had never heard them speak before and they had always acted as though they couldn't see her. Their sudden attention made her uneasy, and she looked at Rion an obvious question in her eyes; Rion only shook his head.

The two men lingered a minute or so longer before hurrying away, deep in discussion. Jenilyn waited until their light was lost from view before turning to her brother.

"What was that about?" Jenilyn asked.

"I don't know," Rion said, his brow furrowed in thought.

"Do you think that I might get to leave soon like you do?" Jenilyn said, eyes bright with excitement.

"I wouldn't wish something like that."

Jenilyn looked at her brother for a moment; studying his vacant expression knowing that he wouldn't say anything more. Eventually he turned over and closed his eyes. Jenilyn followed suit hoping that sleep would find her.

On the red part i think you need a different word like Upon. It will flow better. The green is unessecary. Dispose of it. It did grab my attention.

It was obviously human, but it kept changing. Portraying different faces, genders, and appearances. All the while it was painful for the girl to look at, so she squinted her eyes to help protect them; not wanting to take her eyes of it. The only light in that dark chamber was emanating from it's skin, and the girls pale face and hollow eyes were illuminated.

I dont think you need so. You missed an f in off but i don't think you should use those words anyway. I think away would fit better. Its not It's. and the last bit disrupts the flow of the story.

You introduce descriptions nicely.

I held my breath through this paragraph. The music I'm listening to mixed with the reading gave it a terrifying effect. Very good.

Swallowing and clutching the pendant that hung around his neck he stepped hesitantly into the shadowy alleyway. He strode down the alleyway choking down the fear that constricted his breath and was screaming at him to run as fast as he could away from there.

It should be screamed. It flows better and sounds better. Use was as little as possible. If there is another word you can use us it. Was is one of the most overused words we have. Just a friendly writer tidbit.

Another creature slowly awoke smelling the adrenaline and fear that passed its resting place. Its burning eyes narrowed to slits as it watched the panic-ridden figure hurry past. The shadow thing rose to its full height, and crept along the wall until it overtook the man and was well ahead of him. It waited at the end of the alley while the man approached it. Its eyes burning a chaotic red as the man came nearer. The shadows that it seemed to me made of were boiling and shifting in the creatures frenzied excitement.

I dont really like the word another here. I think A would be just fine. I say it cause of the screen break you put in after the girl. The Shadow Thing doesn't work for me. It just doesn't fit. And the me should be be.

The shadow thing seeing that its prey was trying to escape, lunged at the man. The man had time for one soft scream before he was completely enveloped by the angrily rolling shadows. The shadows eventually slowed as the thing sat without moving, slowly digesting its meal. Some time passed before the creature finally moved and returned to its hiding place dozing patiently.

You missed a comma between thing and seeing. And you used the man twice in a row. The second the man could be he. Since you never applied a gender to the creature the reader will understand.

I read the rest and i am assuming the beginning was like a prolouge like thing. I enjoyed a great deal. It kept my interest and had constant movement. The creatures are interesting to say the least. I have a soft spot for creatures of the shadow.

This has a good foundation with a littel revision and editting will be quite wonderful. Keep up the good work.

I found this piece to go on a bit like "she did this then she did that" - there was little variety in sentence structure.

You can combat this using present participles

"Looking around, she picked up the item"

Character wise it seemed a little 2d. Your characters were bog standard archetypes in fantasy novels. Add mannerisms, real goals and make them different.

Plot wise I cant tell yet where this is going. However, once the prose is made a little more interesting then I will return.

Although the first paragraph contains tension, I didnt feel drawn in by it. You need to be more snappy than that.

for example.

"Stomach clenched, she backed off from the creature."

Its more interesting that "the creature approached her".

Good luck. Yes, its a foundation that can be built upon.

I enjoyed it. I found that the two prologue type sections drew me in, I wanted to know more about these creatures. I was also intrigued by the scene with Jenilyn and her brother Rion, again there was an element of mystery here: where was Rion going, What was he doing? Who was he?

There were also the question as to why these people are have to hide from these creatures at night, when previously they hadn't. I was very drawn into this story, and I can tell that with editing and the further development of the plot that you should be able to create interesting characters.

It is a very good start and it's only going to get better.

Very short addition that I haven't gotten around to doing a thourough edit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jenilyn awoke to a toe nudging her shoulder. Sitting down abruptly, she turned and looked up to a hard unfamiliar face. Jenilyn scrambled to her feet and glared at the man.

“Who are you?”

“Don’t ask questions. You will be told everything you need to know when the knowledge is necessary,” he said, his face cold and expressionless.

“Wha--”

The man grabbed her by arm and started walking down the passage way that Rion always disappeared down. Jenilyn stumbled along behind him; she looked back and saw her mother staring after her fearfully. Jenilyn for the first time felt tears on her eyes and she brushed away the wet hastily; she watched her mother’s confused face fade away into the darkness.

It seemed like hours of tripping behind the man for Jenilyn. Soon the turned a corner into a passage way that was dimly lit by small torches. Jenilyn barely noticed the torches, she felt strangely disturbed by her mother’s infant-like face and the memory kept replaying in her mind.

They turned another corner and bright rays of sunlight fell on them. Jenilyn slipped out of the man’s grip and stumbled back, hands over her eyes. Thousands of pins were piercing though her eyes and a throbbing wave was rolling through the back of her head.

“What is it?” she said, panicked. “Make it go away.”

“It’s the sun,” the man said monotously. “I can’t make it go away. Your eyes will adjust and get used to it soon.”

Ummmm... I think I'm having trouble understanding. It's a well written piece that seems to be composed of three different stories that have no known connection so far. I get the story involving Jenilyn, but what's the deal with the old man and the unknown girl? Please explain.

Yes I agree - different points of view straight after one another may annoy the reader. I have two strands in my book and they meet often. Perhaps write more of one before you introduce another character?
