Hello all,

I've been slop coding a little project and decided to share. It started with a simple question:

How long would it actually take to travel from A to B in a fictional world?

That quickly turned into generating an entire map/world, sheerly because "I wonder...".

Which led to Cartalith, it is a single-page HTML application for generating and working with realistic fantasy maps (I know realistic and fantasy not just in the same sentence, but following each other).

Features because we love those:

- Procedural world generation
- Plate tectonics, mountains and erosion
- Rivers, lakes, seas and continental shelves
- Climate and biomes
- Wind and ocean currents
- Geographically sensible settlement placement
- Roads and optimised routes
- Travel simulation with different transport methods
- Customisable map colours and terrain styles
- LOD-based zooming for large maps (because ew pixels)
- Save and load generated worlds
- Map editing and additional layers
- Limited 3D visualisation
- Bring your own heightmap and infer tectonics and all the other cool features!
- Feel like the generated map could use a tweak there's a set of brushes and manual tools!
- Runs in a browser, including on smartphones (dear lord if you go higher than 2k, go get a coffee. It's html, not a dedicated program)

The idea is that the systems build on each other rather than simply placing random features on a map.

Mountains affect rivers.
Climate affects biomes.
Geography affects settlements.
Settlements affect roads.
Terrain and roads affect travel.
(so yes it's all simulation)

It's still very much a work in progress, but the goal is to make something useful for worldbuilding, mapmaking, figuring out whether a fictional world actually makes geographical sense and giving you a solid estimate on travel time.

And yes, it's just an HTML file.

If you're on a phone, I'd advise cycling trough seeds and settings at 512px resolution. If you got a visually pleasing map hit the button for a higher resolution. Higher resolutions are considerably more demanding within the constraints of a browser.

All calculations are taken en based on academic papers.
