After more than two years of on-again, off-again discussion, a vote on whether to change the name of Young Writers Society to WriterFeed was held from August 1 through August 31. Everyone who had created an account before August 1 and had either logged in within the past year or completed at least 10 reviews was eligible to vote.
A total of 251 people voted. Of those, 93 voted to keep the name Young Writers Society, while 158, roughly 63 percent, voted to change it to WriterFeed.
This is a major change, and it is not without risk. Young Writers Society has existed since 2004, and changing such an established name may, temporarily I hope, lead to less traffic.
However, the new name better reflects the kind of community YWS has become. Some of our active members were not even alive when the site began. Others have been here long enough that the “young writer” label no longer feels as though it applies to them. Many people have also left over the years because they felt they had aged out of the community. Removing “Young Writers” from the name is meant to make it clear that the site is for writers of all ages.
Young writers will nevertheless remain at the heart of the community. The design of the site, its events, and even its background color reflect its roots as a place created primarily for younger writers. That is not going to change.
Most importantly, WriterFeed will have the same mission as Young Writers Society: to promote creative writing as a favorite pastime. We are not focused on making every work publishable. We are focused on making writing fun. Given the direction social media has taken and the emergence of AI-generated content, I believe that mission is more important than ever.
