Since it's April, we're in the midst of spring in the Northern Hemisphere - share some of your favourite spring poetry with us! Feel free to elaborate on why it's your favourite / comment on other things, too, if you want.

Not entirely stereotypically springy - but somewhat fits the bill... one of my favorite Spring Poems, and probably in my top 5 poems in general is "Departmental" by Robert Frost - https://www.robertfrost.org/departmental.jsp
Spoiler

This is one of the few poems I have memorized having memorized it back in High School. It has stuck with me. It's about the imagined process that ants take when encountering another dead ant and the thorough departmental work they go about in response. On the surface it seems uncaring and robotic, and yet in this strict process they adhere to maybe there's is love in the order... I don't know why I love this poem so much, I guess for many reasons - one of them being as part of a more formal church expression that follows a precise liturgy for worship I think some might assume it is absent of emotion (like the organized process of ants) and yet, in this careful order and repetition there is a precise truth and yes, love and honor and devotion are expressed.

The poem also makes me think about how some of our (human) responses in light of death and grief and disaster are a desire for "gentleness" and "care" but that there are many expressions of that. There is gentleness in sitting with someone and listening to them, there is gentleness is a quiet hug, but there is a fierce practical gentleness to the person who makes a casserole and leaves it at your door without a word, or the person who quietly takes care of your trash, or vacuums your living room, or drives you to an appointment. These are not opposing sides - but true realities of life and need - and it seems ants in this imagined depiction have mastered that more utility-driven side gentleness.

I don't know - I just re-read a whole mass of text I wrote about the poem in 2017 and I'd say I disagree with many of points I made back then :) that's the beauty of this poem - it is very rich with meaning as an allegory for humanity and also as a thoughtful mirror to ritual, duty, utility, and work - all tucked into a poem that looks deceptively simple on its surface (Robert Frost is a master of this!).

In spring I tend to thing most about spring animals I guess - so my favorite spring poems have birds, and ants, and grasshoppers, and fireflies. :) though gardening poems are also lovely! <3

Looking forward to hearing what other people's fave Spring poems are too!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

@alliyah, love Robert Frost!

My all-time favourite spring poem has to be Worm Moon by Mary Oliver. A "worm moon" traditionally is the first full moon of spring and is typically when earthworms begin to rise out of the soil - really significant / meaningful for me. Like:

1
In March the earth remembers its own name.
Everywhere the plates of snow are cracking.
The rivers begin to sing. In the sky
the winter stars are sliding away; new stars
appear as, later, small blades of grain
will shine in the dark fields.

And the name of every place
is joyful.

Oliver wrote a book of poetry called Twelve Moons, one for each full moon that happens during the year. Worth checking out, for sure!

I've also recently loved At the Equinox by Arthur Sze (who is the current United States Poet Laureate!) - so much lush sensory detail. My favourite lines:

the lapping waves
cover an expanse of mussels clustered on rocks;
and, giving shape to what is unspoken,
forsythia buds and blooms in our arms.
In a shadow there is the blessing of a shadow.

Wisława Szymborska ~ Parting with a view (Pożegnanie widoku)

I don't reproach the spring
for starting up again.
I can't blame it
for doing what it must
year after year.

I know that my grief
will not stop the green.
The grass balde may bend
but only in the wind.

It doesn't pain me to see
that clumps of alders above the water
have something to rustle with again.

we read it best from another person: "Whatever goes on in the affairs of human beings, spring goes its own exultant way."

Salomeja Neris ~ By The Spring

Nettle-bed tulips line...
Who shall say no?
Willow and birch entwined
By the spring grow.

Apple-tree listening
In the warm dusk.
Pale sky, stars glistening,
Every breeze hushed.

Thus little sister gave
Solace to me...
You're not a swallow grey!
You're her, maybe?

Come from my land, maybe?
Once more, please, trill!
That spring, that apple-tree,
I see them still...
[ they/them ]
