For a couple years now, I haven’t had the brain capacity to lend my energy for NaPo. This year, I am determined to have some kind of consistency even if I have to blend it as a daily reflection on teaching, my day-to-day life, and the weirdness of being an adult all at once.

Also, I’ll be fresh off a trip to Japan and will hopefully be adopting a cat by the first few days of NaPo, so some very exciting times ahead! c:

P.S.:
Past NaPos:
25 - alone in the garden
24 - the beauty of the untold.
23 - light, ethereal, bliss, awe.
22 - a summation of my schooling
21 - stuck behind the scenes, between the notes.
20 - i liked it better when my fears were faceless
19 - these benedight flowers
18 - my hopes are as strong as bubbles

0. a twenty-six year-old

a thirty-six hour long day greeted me
as a grand happy birthday this year.
my eyes read until they drooped and shut
until the short walls started to shake.

1. a dreamer

seven questions to show yourself,
your identity as a person,
your philosophy as a teacher,
whether you should restart.

but it’s not that simple,
not giving answers to a panel,
no there’s more to this idea,
to this method of understanding
yourself so well that no one
could misconstrue your words,
that everyone sees who you are.

and who you are, truly, deep
down into your soul, someone
who cannot help but hope.

2. a fan

you are one of the lucky ones -
watching your favorite band rise to the top,
gather more and more internet fame,
leave you wondering when the dream ends.

amongst the ever-expanding internet,
there are those with a narrowing vision,
an elimination of interests over time,
but they cannot stop it themselves.

you can only watch from the sidelines
and hope that something will change
for them and for the better, and that
you can support them as a friend.

Oh my goodness! How exciting! Would love to hear about your trip (and your cat if you got one!)

Strong start so far key - I definitely detect your sense of voice in these - and there is a sort of wise-scholarly / riddle-like feel behind the poems here.

Hope you have a wonderful April!
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

these poems have been a splendid read! i find the voice brooding, actively trying to teach or guide the reader while also sharing a personal experience. on the most recent poem "a fan", i found it interesting how the poem turned a limited, luck-based experience of fame into this commentary on a broad subject such as the internet.

the lines: "leave you wondering when the dream ends." & "you can only watch from the sidelines and hope that something will change"
really holds your place as someone who is a witness, but has no control over not just what ends but *also* begins, which fascinated me!

i also found it wonderful how number one and two both share this overall link about hope in an experience you have trouble figuring out (identity & fame/limitations). it's a lovely connection between two distinct poems that makes them vary, but also familiar. these have been great pieces!!

@alliyah - the Japan trip was super cool and invigorating since we went with other teachers, students and a few parents!! Also, I did in fact adopt a cat hahah have had her for a week! I feel like I’m always experimenting with how I want to convey tone and the message in my poems but I like there you can sense some kind of connection between them!

@lalalucky - I think I very much approached my NaPo thread this year as a teacher would, in wanting to inform an since while conveying a message so I’m glad that seemed apparent in both of these poems! My inspiration for “a fan” was mainly feeling like all of these crazy things had been happening on the internet in recent weeks but nothing fully was impacting me, which led to a weird feeling within me. Thank you so much!

In the winter months, gale storms in Svalbard can reach wind speeds of 130 km/h. Accompanied by or following snowfall, such storms can reduce visibility dramatically, more so in the winter months of the polar night. During these storms, travel is not advised.
