Welcome to the Short Story Weekend in September! The Gen Lit Crew brings you a weekend dedicated to short stories, where you can either finish a draft of your short story or write one from scratch. This event runs from the 12th until the 14th of September!

In general, short stories can range from approximately 1000 to 7000 words, or even up to 10.000! But ultimately, you set your own goals. You can even try your hand at some flash fiction (under 1K words), novelettes or novellas (exceeding 7.5K words).

How to Participate

Claim a spot in this thread and update your word count as many times as you like during the weekend, or just mention parts of your progress - this depends on your goal.

Start Planning

Visit the Planning Hub to begin with some planning, share your premise, brainstorm ideas, and more!

Weekend Write-In

A Write-In is coming soon! This will remain open for the entire duration of the event, where you can write and have a fun time! Stay tuned for the link, which will be shared in this thread and in the People Tab.

Awards?

Of course! Along with a good feeling of satisfaction and a story ready to receive reviews, you will also receive a shiny badge for your work ;D See the post below.

If you have any questions, post them in this thread or shoot a PM to any Gen Lit moderator. Start your planning and happy writing!

I had a question- does the theme of the story have to be fall or we're free to choose whatever topic we like? I see it's not clearly mentioned anywhere but the banners and posters were all heavily autumn oriented so I just thought I'd just clear it up.
Also if I'm writing a novella, the last chapter needs to be published before 14th ends, right?

@AlexWrites The event’s theme is fall, however you are free to choose your own topic for your story! The goal is to write a new short story or finish an old one by the end of the weekend (by the 14th). You can simply post your word count in this thread, or publish it if you like and share the link here.

Thank you for the clarification @Roxanne! This is me claiming a spot. Though short stories are not my speciality, I'm willing to try out new things this fall.

Edit:

I'm currently at 1639 words for Chapter- 1, Partners in Fall
Completed 4873 words with Chapter- 2, Partners in Fall

Spot! I'm working on one, currently at 2,609 words.

Edit : At 3,540 words!

Final Edit : Sort of done with the first draft, but I'm not so happy with it, I'll probably have to edit it some more.
