heist / adventure
urban fantasy / science meets magic
dystopian governments / gentlemen thieves
corruption, power and rebellion / grief, healing, and redemption

In the world of Aphirah, magic is a natural resource, a gift fallen from the stars. Some mages view it as a science bound by rules and conventions; others treat it as an art that draws its power from intention and expression. But for the five Houses of Aphirah, magic is a plague, a weapon too freely deployed by anarchists and criminals resisting the iron fist of their rule. The Heirs of these Houses bear the weight of the expectation to crush this resistance— an expectation they don't know how to fulfill, until whispers of a long-lost power returning present a chance to reverse their fortunes.

Cyrin and Mireya, two thieves of the underground Arcade, don't expect to be the heralds of that change when they accidentally discover the location of an ancient artifact with the power to alter the world's magic supply. One thing is certain to them: it cannot be allowed to fall into the hands of the autocratic Houses. So when the Heirs approach them with an offer to steal it on their behalf, the two of them plan to double-cross them and run off with the artifact and the money. But as the law-bound and the lawless discover they have an enemy in common— a ruthless crime lord planning to seize control of the world's magic to enact his revenge— they must choose whether to work together, or allow the cycle of violence to iterate once again.

Hello, and welcome to my attempt at Camp NovMo! TLS already exists as a completed first draft, but it needs some serious work. I plan to rewrite many of the early chapters entirely, retroactively add some details I thought of too late, and also implement feedback from YWS reviews along the way. I have a busy July, so my goal is 10k words, which should get me a good ways toward having something new and hopefully exciting for my beta readers to read, and allow me to start the sequel sooner. I'm excited to share my progress here!

(Thanks everyone!! Appreciate the encouragement so much <3)

I got a start on the rewrite of the first chapter! I'm going for a new direction with the opening heist and I'm satisfied with it so far— but if I change my mind yet again and you see me switch to a secret third direction in a few days, no you didn't. I was totally doing that all along. Totally.

Also, as it stands, these are the new opening lines unless I think of something a little funnier.

It probably would’ve been a good idea to check the weather forecast before deciding to climb up the side of a building with no gloves on in near-winter. But it was more than a little late for that.

Okay, I promise I have not abandoned the first chapter— I just got a flash of inspiration for chapter 2, and I had a lot of time on my hands waiting for things to happen as backstage crew during tech week today. I think this rewrite introduces Shane so much better, which is good because that poor guy deserves the best. (I say this, as I prepare to put him through something in this same chapter.)

And now for your out-of-context quote, featuring Shane's rather deadpan idea of humor:

“People who are happy with their government usually don’t attempt to burn down a city hall.”

Chapter 2 is rewritten! It's my shortest chapter yet (by quite a bit, at 2145 words— Draft 1's shortest chapter was 2692 words), but I'm honestly happy with it that way. Its purpose is just to have a short and sweet (I mean, arguably more like short and sad) scene to introduce Shane, and one of my goals is to cut down the word count anyway.

I'm a bit behind on my goal, but I just got done with tech week at my job, so I should have a lot more time for this. Onwards!

We're back to writing Chapter 1! It wouldn't be an opening heist without Cyrin and Mireya bantering, and I aim to please, so here you have it.

Before Cyrin could step in, however, they were distracted by Mireya springing to her feet and launching herself up to slap the top of the doorway. Considering it was several feet above her head, it required quite the jump.

“...And that was?” Cyrin asked.

“The superstition I said I’d come up with,” Mireya said brightly. “Slap the doorframe on your way in for good luck.”

“Seems awfully simple. Is that all it takes to be lucky?”

“You’re right. Let’s add an extra step in there.” Mireya’s hand darted out, and although Cyrin saw it coming, they made no move to dodge it before she slapped them lightly on the shoulder.

Hey.

“There, that should be good enough for the both of us,” Mireya declared. “No need to return the favor.”

“How convenient.”

Okay. Don't shout at me, but I might have gotten inspiration for Chapter 4 and skipped ahead again to start rewriting that. Look, heists take a lot of planning and clearly my brain is still pulling together the cleverness >.> Also, I missed Marius...

Speaking of Marius, here's the goofiness of the day:

“I got an interview for a position as a cybersecurity analyst right here in Crystal City, which is in two days,” Marius said brightly, before pausing. “Well… I didn’t wait for them to select me. I found a back door in their system, sent myself an invitation email from them, and scheduled myself on their calendar. I can’t wait to tell them about how much they need me.”
