In the Zodiac Realm, a strange truth lies at the heart of power: the rulers are the weakest of all Starbornes.

Unlike their kin, they were born without the celestial gifts granted by the Zodiac. An anomaly among their kind, they possess no inherent magic—only the mysterious Starstones, relics of immense power that make them both revered and vulnerable. Because they hold no allegiance to any one sign, and require the most protection, they were chosen as rulers—neutral, symbolic, and closely guarded.

For centuries, peace reigned. At least, where the light touched. Whispers of darkness stirred beneath the surface—minor crimes, quiet secrets—but nothing that threatened the realm itself.

Until two weeks ago.

The Emperor and Empress were found murdered in cold blood, their bodies discovered by their twelve-year-old daughter, Princess Sapphire, alone in the dead of night. The assassins vanished without a trace—taking with them the royal Starstones and those of the fallen guards.

Since then, the realm has teetered on the edge of chaos.
In just the past week, several attempts have been made on the young princess’s life. In response, the royal court assembled an elite guard—a group of twelve, sworn to protect her at all costs.

You are one of them.

Your mission is simple: keep the princess alive until her coronation, one year from now.

Long ago, the skies above the mortal world were watched over by thirteen celestial guardians—the Zodiac Warriors. They protected the spiritual realm, a hidden plane above the clouds inhabited by radiant beings called Starbornes. These glowing orbs of energy would drift into the human world at night, silently bestowing good fortune and peace upon those they passed.

But the night held shadows.

Dark entities called Nightbornes lurked in the same realm, feeding on the Starbornes' energy to increase their own power. One among them grew far stronger than the rest. With each Starborne he devoured, he evolved, until he became something far more dangerous—a spirit capable of cursing entire cities.

This creature became known as Nightmare.

Taking on a ghastly, shifting form, Nightmare hovered over a thriving mortal city and cast his influence across it. His tendrils crept into every home, draining the dreams of sleeping citizens and replacing them with horrors. The city slowly collapsed—its people sleep-deprived and frightened, its economy ruined, its spirit hollowed out. Crops failed, trade died, and families lived in a constant state of unrest, too afraid to sleep. Even the skies above the city grew dim.

The Zodiacs realized Nightmare’s threat had grown too great. They chose to send Zeagredes, the Warrior of Balance, to end his reign. Though not their strongest, she was known for her precision, wisdom, and harmony—qualities they believed could counteract his chaos.

She descended to the mortal world and met him at dusk.

But Nightmare had changed.

Using his new power to split into multiple forms, he overwhelmed her. Zeagredes fought valiantly, but was defeated. Her energy—her very essence—was consumed. When Nightmare rose again, stars now shimmered along his form, and a glowing yin-yang symbol shone above his eyes. He had absorbed her power and nearly matched the strength of the mightiest Zodiac.

Devastated, the remaining Zodiacs made a desperate decision: to divide their essence and grant it to chosen Starbornes, transforming them into new warriors. These Starborne champions trained quickly, and when they were ready, they joined their creators in one final assault.

The battle was long and brutal. Nightmare consumed many, growing stronger with each. But the combined might of the Zodiacs and their new warriors began to turn the tide.
Cornered and near defeat, Nightmare chose destruction over surrender.

He unleashed one final, devastating blast of energy—obliterating himself and the remaining Zodiacs in a single, blinding burst.

The war was over.

In the aftermath, the surviving Starbornes were left without their protectors. But rather than fade, they built a new civilization—one shaped by sacrifice and held together by the legacy of those who gave everything to protect the balance between light and shadow.

POWER DESIGN:

STARSTONES: When a Starborne is killed (basically any way that a mortal would (side note: Starborne’s have gold blood)), their body launches out of it what is their heart, otherwise known as their Starstone (this goes for unevolved and evolved Starborne’s). A Starstone contains the power/essence of the defeated Starborne, and if consumed (it's easy to crush up and eat) the person who ate it gains power. Think of it like leveling up. Each Starstone only “levels” up your power once, however, if you kill a powerless Starborne (read premise for more info), their Starstone gives your powers the same effect as consuming 10 regular Starstones would.

GENERAL POWERS:
They control the element connected with their sign

Water signs:
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Earth signs:
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Air signs:
Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Fire signs:
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

INDIVIDUAL POWERS:

ARIES: Can surround themselves in fire and launch into powerful, explosive dashes that break through barriers and enemies

TAURUS: The power of trapping their victims in illusions of the mind as well as individual illusions in the real world.

GEMINI: Can create carbon copies of themselves, the limit of copies they can make is 20. When the copies are struck by a fatal blow they disappear.

CANCER: Can give up to three allies temporary armor similar to their armored skin, however, the more they give the more dangerous the repercussions.

LEO: Their abilities lie in the emotions of others. If their comrades have faith or cheer them on, they gain strength. If their allies have no spirit or trust for Leo’s then they lose strength. If their enemy fears the Leo then they gain strength. If their enemy isnt fazed then they lose strength.

VIRGO: Celestial threads are their magical ability, which are sharper than swords and cut with precision and grace. However, if the Virgo’s reasons for using the Celestial swords are dishonorable, have ill intent or immoral, they are unable to summon the threads. However, the Virgo’s have the unique ability to sense an enemy’s weakness.

LIBRA: Similar to Virgo, Libra’s have an internal scale. No matter who it is, depending on how morally good or bad a person is decides if they’re strengthened or weakened. A person's deeds don’t do as much as a person's inner turmoil and ultimate morals to affect this scale. If they have more good in them, they gain strength. If they have more bad, they’re weakened. Everytime this power is used it is used on themselves as well, a morality check if you will.

SCORPIO: Can create unlimited magical shields that are poisonous to the outside touch. Whatever it's protecting will not be harmed by its poison, but anything outside of it will be hurt. However, the more shields there are, the smaller with less potency with the poison they are.

SAGITTARIUS: Fires starlight arrows of various kinds. Some can heal, others can poison or put to sleep, and some can even track a target. But no matter the effect, they are unbreakable.

CAPRICORN: Similar to Medusa, he can turn people to stone by meeting their eyes and temporarily mind control them when reanimating them. However, if they lose concentration they release control of their minion.

AQUARIUS: Can strike people with magical lightning that absorbs other’s magical powers that they borrow temporarily.

PISCES: Water manipulation to an extreme. They can gather even the tiniest moisture particles to create a water vessel. If you get caught in one of the water bubbles the Pisces can possess you for as long as you’re in contact with the magic water.

The Zodiac Realm is an invisible world that floats high above the clouds of the human realm—hidden from view by day, but sometimes peeking through the night sky in glimmers of light and color. Ethereal and steeped in magic, the realm is deeply tied to nature, exuding an almost dreamlike beauty.

Its design draws inspiration from ancient Greek civilization—the kind built for gods—with majestic ruins, graceful columns, and timeless stone architecture scattered among the clouds. Though rooted in the old world, there are subtle touches of modernity woven throughout, giving the realm a sense of ageless elegance.

The ground itself is soft, glowing cloud, but nature blooms freely across the terrain. Verdant patches of grass, gentle ponds, and flowering plants emerge wherever the land wills it. The realm’s color palette is rich with hues of deep blue, violet, and warm sunset tones, shifting gently as the day flows into night.

Uniquely, the Zodiac Realm transforms each month to reflect the ruling Zodiac sign. Each sign brings its own season, shaping the weather, environment, and even the energy of the realm. During a Zodiac's designated month, those born under that sign become more powerful, their traits enhanced by the energy of their homeland.

Aries: Rocky highlands, lots of wild, windy places where storms often gather.

Taurus: Lush, fertile valleys with slow rivers, thick forests, blooming meadows.

Gemini: Breezy woodlands with lots of hidden paths, twin trees that grow side by side.

Cancer: Moonlit shores, misty wetlands, cozy caves tucked by water.

Leo: Golden savannahs or sun-drenched plains, big old trees where they can overlook their domain.

Virgo: Neat garden-lands, terraced fields, soft rolling hills full of herbs and flowers.

Libra: Crystal-clear lakes surrounded by symmetrical forests, perfect little islands.

Scorpio: Mysterious marshes and rocky canyons, deep caves sparkling with rare minerals.

Sagittarius: Wide open steppes, wild forests, places with huge, open skies for endless journeys.

Capricorn: Tall mountains, craggy cliffs, cold but majestic landscapes touched by snow.

Aquarius: Windswept highlands, weird, beautiful rock formations, places with strange weather phenomena.

Pisces: Dreamy misty coasts, coral gardens, water gardens with floating lilies.

(Note: Weak Nightborne’s still roam the mortal world, as do unevolved Starborne’s. The Nightborne’s purpose is to curse mortals while the Starborne’s job is the opposite. There are also rulers of the Zodiac realm, which will be further explained in the Premise section.)

Zodiac's to choose from:
Capricorn: Warrior of Cowardice
Aquarius: Warrior of Servitude
Pisces: Warrior of Connection
Aries: Warrior of Bravery
Taurus: Warrior of Deception
Gemini: Warrior of Loyalty
Cancer: Warrior of Sacrifice
Leo: Warrior of Strength

Once all the slots of the main warriors are taken you can request human roles if you'd like since a fair bit of lore will be in the humans realm.

This is a realm roleplay, but it also has lots of plot. Its more of a quick responses roleplay for everyone but me (lmao) cause I'll be piloting the plot.

The princess sat alone in the still, suffocating darkness of her bedroom. The only light came from herself. Hundreds of tiny stars twinkled in her midnight-black hair, and identical stars glimmered faintly in her eyes, emanating a soft light. This eerie glow was the only thing that marked her as royal, the only gift her family possessed in place of powers.

She had been trapped in this room for days. The maids came in only to drop off food and water. No words. No glances. No comfort. It was customary. If no one spoke to the princess, no one could hurt her. So Sapphire lay in silence from dawn to dusk, alone with her thoughts. But...she...she wanted to get up today. Maybe it would be okay. The princess took a deep breath before slowly sitting up in her bed, taking another slow breath. She glanced over at her untouched practice papers she still needed to do but couldn't bring herself to complete. They sat mocking her from her desk, gloating in their power to decide if she was “good enough.”

For the first time that day, Sapphire slid one leg off her bed. Her dark skin seemed to disappear into the shadows. Carefully, she planted her other foot onto the carpet, the texture jarring after days of lying still. A jolt of pins and needles rushed up her leg, and she gasped, her foot tingling like she'd been shocked.

She winced.

This was a mistake.

Her eyes strayed towards the direction of her window, a tiny glimmer of hope turning her heartbeats painful.

Maybe… maybe just a little bit of light…

She shuffled slowly to the window, if it could still be called that. Wooden boards had long since blotted out any trace of the outside world. There was no removing them on her own. That left one other option, the doors she had been trying so hard to ignore. The balcony.

It was locked. She knew that.

But one of the kinder maids had slipped her the key once, whispering that a breath of outside air might help. However, that maid had been fired soon after for staying too long during one of Sapphire's...episodes.

Sapphire hesitated. Her fingers hovered over the key on the dresser. Then, almost on their own, they grabbed it. She slipped it into the lock. A sharp click echoed through the room, loud in the silence.

She froze.

Her breath caught. Her heart jumped. She stared at the unlocked door.

This isn't a good idea.

Her chest tightened. She backed away from the door, wide-eyed and trembling.

It’s not safe. Someone’s going to get in-

Something's going to get me-

A soft whimper escaped her lips. Her eyes darted wildly across the room, searching the dark.

Something’s already in here.

It’s watching me.

It’s going to kill me.

It’s—

Gold. Flashes of it. Everywhere.

Sapphire let out a choked scream as her knees buckled, but she couldn’t move, couldn’t run. The images struck her like lightning, trapping her in the room of horrors which was her mind.

The King and Queen on the ground

Gold gushing from them in endless fountains

Their eyes empty, glassy

Their chests torn open, hearts gone

Gold on them, on the floor, on Sapphire’s hands

She touched it

She touched them—

SHE’S COVERED IN IT

THEY’RE DEAD

SOMEONE DID THIS

WHITE EYES

THE WHITE EYES WERE STARING AT HER

THEY'RE COMING FOR ME I'M DEAD I'M DEAD I'M GOING TO DIE

i AM goInG TO DIE—

THE WHITE EYES

Something inside her cracked wide open. A scream tore from her throat, shrill and raw, so loud and sharp it startled even her.

“THE WHITE EYES—” she shrieked, crashing to the floor in a mess of thrashing limbs and sobs. “THEY’RE COMING! THEY’RE GOING TO KILL ME—” Her cries were cut off by violent hiccuping sobs, her chest seizing as she fought for air.

Gold. Gold. It’s everywhere. I’m dying. I’m dying I’m dying I—

“I SEE YOU! YOU CAN’T KILL ME—”

Suddenly, hands grabbed her, tight and forceful. She screamed again, struggling, kicking, clawing. Her fist connected. Someone cursed.

“That bitch!” a voice snarled.

Pain burst through her ribs as they were hit with a sharp blow. She curled instinctively, clutching her side as her body twisted in agony. All she could do was gasp out broken, babbling sounds as panic drowned her.

Then there was light. Blinding light she hadn't seen in days.

“It's us, Your Highness,” a voice sneered.

Sapphire flinched, her hands flying up to shield her starlit eyes. Slowly, she peeked through her fingers. A maid stood above her.

“T-t…turn…” she sobbed, unable to finish the sentence. Her body sagged, weak and trembling.

The maid’s lip curled. “No one is here. You're fine.”

Sapphire whimpered, curling into a ball despite the fire in her ribs. “...the…THE WHIte…no…”

The other maid hovered near the door. “Let's just go, Samari. We’ll get in trouble if we stay.”

Samari scowled. “Yeah. You’re right.” She stomped away, flicking the lights off before slamming the door behind her. Darkness returned.

Sapphire stayed crumpled on the floor, her sobs fading into hiccups, then into silence. Her glittery tears shimmered beneath her cheek, a small galaxy spilled beside her.

“Ma…momma… I’m sorry…” she whispered, voice cracking. “I tried to save you… Papa…”

Another sob built in her throat but never made it out. She was too tired. Too tired to fight anymore, too tired to even cry.

The glow from her hair and eyes dimmed as her body slackened. Fingers twitching, she reached out to nothing, then let her hand fall.

“I… I’m scared, Momma,” she breathed, voice barely a thread.

“I don’t want the white eyes to kill me…”
You want me to kidnap your daughter so she doesn't get kidnapped? -Yes! Precisely!

'Sir Leone,

Upon careful evaluation of our candidates, you have been selected as a recruit for a special assignment. Please report to the Palace as soon as possible. Details will be revealed upon your arrival.'

Leone could still hardly believe the words written in his letter, nor the familiar seal of the Emperor's family crest. As he gathered supplies from his desk, his vibrant peridot-green eyes kept drifting back to the parchment with a mixture of fascination, excitement, and concern.

On one hand, he was flattered and amazed that he had been selected out of presumably many more qualified and experienced candidates. On the other hand, the matter sounded very serious. He had heard news of the Emperor and Empress's assassination already—a tragic revelation for the Zodiac Realm. It made him sick to his stomach. He couldn't help but imagine that was the purpose of this special assignment—something to do with the dead rulers, or perhaps the heiress they left behind.

Trying to focus, Leone threw a couple of papers and other common supplies into his large pack. He had been busy gathering up his belongings, across his room in the training barracks. This letter had come in the nick of time—he was already on his way out of this place, mid-transition between this place and becoming a member of the Emperor's Guard.

As he riffled through his bedside drawer, he noticed something he had thrown in there long ago. A down-facing picture frame, simple and easy to store.

Leone slowly reached for the frame, but hesitated to look at the picture inside.

He had the figures on the other side memorized. There was himself, a younger version at least. There was his brother with a blond mane, like their father, and their younger sister with near-black locks like their mother. Both parents were present in the photo behind them, and the five of them all seemed so happy.

Perhaps for the latter two, it was. But for the other three, what a facade that image was.

Leone sighed heavily, quickly moving the photo into his pack. Though he still refused to look at it, the memories had stirred his thoughts, and they kept him pondering as he finished packing and left his room for the last time.

\\\\\

After a decent trek from his academy, Leone could finally see the long path he recognized so much, winding into the dark marshes and black chasms that currently claimed the landscape. There was no mistaking that it was August, the Month of Scorpio. Leone wasn't quite as fond of these moist terrains—biased he may be, but his favorite was the Month of Leo. When the golden savannahs would reclaim these hillsides once more, the view would be even better.

He was already daydreaming of the power he felt, charging through the flowing grass and feeling like he had absorbed its energy. He would put it toward whatever his goal of the day was. Play, sport, or sometimes—admittedly—a more devious ambition. Whatever it was, he almost always won. He hated the feeling of defeat, and the weight of disappointment.

Finally, after a few more minutes, he made it to his target. It was no manor, but it was a very decent-sized house. The outside was smooth ivory-hued stone, with pillars decorated by rings of goldish-bronze at their bases and tips. A similar hue of metal decorated the many windows, and the railing of the upstairs balcony. Dusky gray-toned curtains blocked most of the inside view.

After climbing the chiseled stairs of the front porch, Leone sighed heavily, eyes cast down. For a brief moment, he thought about turning right back around. A part of him wanted to say something, but most of him didn't even know what.

Unfortunately, he wouldn't get much of a choice.

The front door creaked open, catching him off guard and making him flinch. A woman peeked out from the other side, keeping the door ajar. She was notably aged, but far from elderly, and she was dressed down in a simple, long single-strapped dress. It was the hue of terracotta, with a sheer gold-hued scarf covering the shoulders. Her near-black hair likewise sat in a thick braid, hanging over her shoulder. The traits of her Zodiac included humble backward-curving horns, deep espresso scales along the legs and feet, and frilled fins extending from the calves. Her soft brown eyes, with their rectangular pupils, squinted as if she couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"Leone?" She gained an expression of mixed sorrow and confusion, creasing her lightly-tanned skin at the brow and eyes. She opened the door wider, quickly taking a step out. "What are you doing back here? There's no way you've finished your academy time that quickly."

Leone nodded to her. "Mother. And actually, it's been months."

"It has?" She sighed, pressing one hand to her forehead. "R-Right. I'm sorry, dear, the years...they seem to blur together now. Especially since..."

Leone pursed his lips, his tail swishing as if he was trying to subconsciously swipe the issue away. Even so, he found words slipping out.

Through a half-arsed throat-clearing noise, he asked, "So, is Father in?"

His mother perked up a bit. "Yes, he is. I'm not sure how willing he is to talk..." Unable to dodge the subject much longer, she stammered, "I-I don't suppose—I know you all have your reasons for not speaking with eachother, but I need to ask. Have you heard anything from Sirene or Leif?"

There, Leone felt a flurry of strong emotions. Anger drove him to snap, to tell his mother how foolish she was for even thinking about his selfish brother and sister, then to chew them out as well. Sorrow and empathy drove him to comfort her, maybe even fool her with a little white lie. Just a vague one that would convince her that her two lost children were perfectly fine. Even guilt forced him to think, in the back of his mind, about his own role in this unhealed, ever-lingering fracture that divided their family.

Ultimately, Leone found himself stuck somewhere between those options, reluctantly answering, "I haven't exactly heard from them, no. But I have heard of them, in a way. You know, word of mouth, rumors, snooping about, etcetera."

His mother didn't seem quite happy. "Oh..."

"They're doing fine, though!" Leone insisted. "They're...Well, I don't know exactly what they're doing, but they seem...well-adjusted?"

There was a moment of silence that followed him, and the air between them quickly turned awkward. Pride, perhaps? Its paradox, shame? Even just the knowledge (as had been proven many times in their past) that they were all prone to temperamental explosions? Either way, it had long infected their family, leading to many moments like this.

His mother sighed again, adjusting her braid. "Well, I guess that's better than nothing."

With a sick feeling in his gut, enough to make him feel drained, Leone stepped back. "Look, I won't stay long, and I don't want to pester Father. I just came here to tell you that I got accepted into the Emperor's Guard."

His mother gasped, "What?!"

"They even selected me for a special assignment. I'll be setting out for the Palace soon, and I just figured I should let either of you know. So, if you have to send any letters or such, send them that way. Not to the academy."

"Leone, before you go, you should-"

"Sorry, I don't have a lot of time," Leone said dismissively, already heading back down the stairs. "Bye."

At the bottom of the stairs, he brought himself to glance back once. His mother was silent, yet she was giving him the most piteous look.

"I-I'll send an update when I get there," he said reassuringly, whipping up a cunning smirk. "Don't worry about me, I can handle myself."

His mother managed a small grin and nodded. "Of course. Good luck, Leone..."

With that, Leone turned and started back down the path. This time, he didn't glance back even once, focused on the new opportunity that lay ahead of him.

Theodore awoke to the sound of intent rapping on his door. He sighed, rubbed the sleep from his eyes and stretched. The knocking resumed hesitantly, and Theodore opened his mouth to answer. "I'm coming," he told the knocker in a voice gravelly with sleep, grabbing the white silken shirt from atop a coat hanger by the door to his room and sliding it on, buttoning it up smoothly.

Once he was fully dressed properly, Theodore opened the door. He was met with the sight of Allan, the messenger. "Sorry to wake you so early, mate, but there's some important mail for you, sir. With the seal, it looks like it came straight from the Palace."

Theodore's eyebrows flicked up in surprise, his chocolate brown eyes switching from making eye contact with Allan as he spoke to the letter in his hands. Allan immediately shoved it forward into Theodore's hands, which had twitched forward a mere breath earlier. Theodore's fingers traced the wax of the seal. Well, Allan hadn't been lying about the palace seal being on the letter. "Thank you, Allan. Is that all?"

Allan shrugged. "Most men would hardly ask if a letter from the palace was "all", but yeah, captain. No letters from your family this time."

Theodore chuckled softly and gave the messenger a warm smile. "Alright. Thanks, Allan."

"No problem, captain." The messenger slid away into the night and Theodore closed the door.

A letter from the palace. He mused. Now, what in the realm could this be about?

He thumbed it open carefully, unfolding the expensive-looking parchment inside.

'Captain Tyson,
Upon careful evaluation of our candidates, you have been accepted as a recruit for a special assignment. Please report to the Palace as soon as possible. Details will be revealed upon your arrival.'

Theodore blinked, surprise flooding his features.

"Well, then," he muttered like something had been decided.

He folded up the letter, placed in the drawer of his nightstand, and fell back to sleep.

~~~
Theodore's cousin was just as charming as ever when she traipsed into his room the next morning. "By the grace of all the stars in the sky, get up, Teddy," she said exasperatedly, chucking a book at his feet under the covers.
Theodore chuckled. "Good morning to you too, Netty."
Antoinette scowled. "If anybody knocks on my door in the middle of the night saying, "Please, Netty, I've nowhere else to go", then I'll know it's you and I'll lock the door."
Theodore grinned and stretched across his bed.
"I heard you got mail. Important mail. From the palace." Antoinette's arms were crossed as she kept her stony gaze on Theodore while he got out of bed.
"There's no beating around the bush with you, eh?" He asked rhetorically as he changed into his usual guard uniform, his captain badge gleaming from its position pinned on his chest.
"Word travels fast," she said bluntly.
Theodore huffed a laugh and opened the drawer in his nightstand, taking the letter and throwing it at his cousin, who caught it deftly. He found a suitcase and began to pack while Antoinette read the letter, her lips moving along to the words.
"By the stars, Teddy, the palace has a special job for you?" She exclaimed, a wide grin across her face.
Theodore's lips were in a pouty frown as he grabbed the book at the foot of his bed and held it up to show her. "Seriously, Netty? You threw the book of our childhood bedtime stories at me to wake me up?" He sounded wounded.
Antoinette snorted. "Of course you'd focus on that instead of this."
"This is a precious book!" He defended himself.
"And this is a precious opportunity. You've chosen to do it, haven't you, Teddy?"
His silence as he placed the book delicately into his suitcase was very telling.
She grinned and slapped him lightly in the chest with the flimsy letter. "Hey. This is awesome."
"Not so awesome," he corrected her, turning to meet her eyes under pointedly raised brows, "under the circumstance that the Emperor and Empress were slaughtered and their daughter remains vulnerable."
The happiness leeched from his cousin's face, replaced by sorrow. "Yeah, that does make it considerably less awesome," she muttered. "And it'll definitely be dangerous."
Theodore quirked his lips up into a playful smile. "That's the fun of it though, right?" He asked teasingly, throwing back the words she's said in response to him saying the same thing years before.
Antoinette snorted and clapped him on the back. "Alright, Teddy. Up to the Palace you go."
Theodore mirrored her grin and returned to his packing as she walked out the door, leaving the letter on his dresser.
Mallory blinked the sleep from her eyes as she heard intense rapping on wood. "Who is it?" She grumbled in a voice rough with sleep, rubbing her eyes and trying to get out of the headspace of her dream.
"For some unfathomable reason, there's a letter from the palace for you," a crisp voice mused, sounding unimpressed. "Probably adhering to your captain's complaints and dismissing you from the guard."
Mallory contemplated flopping back under her covers like a displeased fish, but settled for sitting up and flashing the messenger a wide, crooked grin. "Been snooping, have we, Allan?"
The messenger raised an elegant brow at her. "It's no secret that Captain Dedros hates you. That doesn't bother you?"
She grinned fiendishly at him, crossing her legs so she sat primly like a four-year-old on the carpets at school. "Does it bother you that I'm so awesome?" She asked, winking at him and throwing her head back laughing when he wrinkled his nose.
"Considering how untrue that is, stars no," the messenger answered dryly. He dropped the letter on her bed.
Mallory followed his example and wrinkled her nose at the letter. "You're sure it isn't from Suzanne-- that lovely woman who works at the bakery down the street? She promised she'd send me a note next time they had a sale on their blueberry muffins." She eyed the letter like it held promise.
"I am certain that it is from the palace, not Suzanne from the bakery down the street," Allan said primly.
Mallory picked up the letter like it no longer held promise, holding the corner of it like the clean edge of a snotrag as she rotated it to see the sigil. When she saw the wax seal of the palace, she groaned. "You don't think it could be a fake?" She asked the messenger hopefully.
He looked at her like she was insane. "By the stars, open the letter! Captain Dedros asked me to describe the look on your face when you were let go in exquisite detail or else I'd lose my job, so please hurry up."
Mallory's lips stretched into a thin, displeased line. "Fine," she muttered, ripping past the wax seal without a care to it, unfolding the letter and reading it as she spoke to the messenger. "But you can tell Captain Dedros that I faced the termination of my post with a gracefulness that far surpasses his-" She stopped, her jaw dropping.
Allan's voice somehow carried itself to her ears. "Alright, the usual insane amount of arrogance and unseriousness until reading the letter, upon which, shock and disbelief caused her mouth to open, presumably to begin to exclaim about the unfairness of it all-"
"How in the name of all the stars did I get this? There must be some mistake," Mallory insisted, eyes rereading the letter frantically.
Allan quirked a brow dryly, unimpressed. "Are you really lowering yourself to this?"
Mallory shook her head. "No, no, listen. 'Upon careful evaluation of our candidates, you have been accepted as a recruit for a special assignment. Please report to the Palace as soon as possible. Details will be revealed upon your arrival."
Allan paled. "That can't be. Captain Tyson got a letter just like that-- I delivered it to him this morning and managed to sneak a peak."
"I thought the same, but it is literally addressed to 'Lady Troy'." Mallory's tail curled around her leg before swishing up over the sheets, a terrible sign of her anxiety and concern over this before she read on and it relaxed. "Ah. This makes sense. Listen: 'Upon further consideration of your unique qualifications, we have selected another one of your kind to accompany you on this special assignment. You are expected to still make haste to the Palace.' Huh. They still want me to go despite finding a replacement. How odd." Mallory remarked, flummoxed.
Allan gave her a look comprising of furrowed brows and confused, judging eyes. "You're not actually going to go, are you?"
Mallory tossed him a careless grin. "Yes, I am."
The messenger gulped. "He's really going to ensure I lose my job when I tell him about this," he said gloomily, tugging on his collar worryingly.
Mallory pursed her lips and gave him a pitying look. "I'm sure Captain Tyson will stand up for you. From what I've heard, he doesn't stoop to Captain Dedros's level, and that alone makes him more than alright in my book."
Allan huffed, rolling his eyes. "Wish me luck, Troy," he said.
Mallory flicked her eyebrows up spookily. "Good luck," she whispered, waggling her brows playfully.
The messenger gave her an unimpressed look, his lips curling into a sneer before he left, closing the door with noticeable aggression.
Mallory looked over the letter once more, her lips pursed and wrinkle between her furrowed brows.
It didn't make her feel like an extra when they added that part about a replacement in her letter. No, not at all. Still, unease curdled in her stomach as she mulled it over. She sighed and dropped the letter onto the covers, rubbing her eyes and muttering, "I could use a blueberry muffin right about now."
