Welcome to the Deep OOC
Welcome, sailors! This OOC thread is where we'll have most of our discussion, sign-ups, some general information, and character banners.

This is an alternate history storybook! As a result, we are not necessarily constricted to the true order of events-- for example, you might have noticed none of the cities named in the storybook description existed in our 1793. My thinking is that much of the geography of the area has been named (ex. the Bering Sea, the Cascades, Vancouver Island), but territories, provinces and states don't exist yet (ex. no British Columbia or Oregon Territory). The cities are anachronously there to possibly give our crew interesting places to visit!
On a similar note, don't feel like you have to know a ton of history for this SB-- I'm no historian either! Because things are flexible, feel free to weave around history if you have an idea for something: try not to give your character a cellphone, of course, but if you want an invention from our 1830 to exist here or for an event in our 1760 to have happened more recently, just let me know and that should be cool.
The crew is likely going to be quite diverse, as these pirates have probably come from afar and all over. Naval powers like the English, Spanish and Russians, as well as local Indigenous and First Nations groups like the Coast Salish, Tlingit, and Chinook come to mind, but there's no reason your character has to be limited to any of those.
Magic exists! Isn't that neat. Your character might have a power, or they could have a magical artifact that grants them an ability-- or maybe they have neither and just pirate around the old fashioned way. The strength of the Siren's Fleet comes in part due to giving mages the autonomy that helps them serve their crew in the way they feel is best. On the flip side, magical beasts and sea monsters-- some of which pirates from far away are not familiar with-- can be a pain for sailors.
~ Storybook Information ~
This is a moderately-paced storybook. I would love it if we could put out one post a month, but what's more important to me is that we all enjoy the story and make sure to have fun!
If there is interest, I can set up a Discord server for communication, as well as a place to store plot ideas, writing quotes, character art, and so on.
Here's a little guide to the seven roles:
- Captain- commander of the ship, leader of the crew
- First Mate- second-in-command, reports to captain
- Quartermaster- head planner, usually in charge of supplies
- Astronomer- lead navigator, sets course using the stars and creates maps
- Master Gunner- in charge of artillery/cannons, leader in fights
- Medic- sees to wounded, acts as surgeon, may be a magic healer
- Battlemage- a mage who uses their magic to fight in clashes with other ships
You may have noticed I am not claiming the role of the captain even though I'm the DM! This is a role open to anyone who has the character inspiration for it. There's probably going to be some extra plotting and planning with me and whoever takes this role as this story plays out.
Did I say have fun? Have fun!
