How YWS Moderators Are Selected
Understandably, YWS members are sometimes curious how moderators are selected. While throughout the years as the needs of the site have changed some of these processes have shifted, this is a summary of our current process.
Junior Moderator Selection
Once every few months, or when there is specific need for extra staff, there is a "nomination round" for Junior Moderators. During this process, all Admins, Global Moderators, and Junior Moderators, can bring forward nominations of active YWS users of people they think would be good candidates to serve as Junior Moderators. Retired Moderators can also participate in this process. Once nominations have been made, there is a thorough search done for each nominated individual to determine information regarding their participation and also to determine if the nominated individual has had any history of moderating concern (ie. breaking the rules, review-spam, member-reports). After the history and current participation is presented for each nominee, current and retired moderators make votes based on two categories: Activity and Maturity. Because of the responsibilities involved, in order for a nominee to be selected as a moderator, they must have at least a 70% approval rating from this process. Top nominees are chosen based on current site needs, and then added into their chosen crews. Given the need for candor and honesty in these discussions, the specific nominations and content of these discussions are considered confidential and are not shared outside of the nomination thread itself for any reason.
Global Moderator Selection
Global Moderators are also chosen upon the basis of maturity and activity level demonstrated during their time as a Junior Moderator. Nominations occur less frequently because there are fewer Global Moderators - but given the level of responsibility an almost unanimous vote of approval from current and participating retired Global Moderators and Admins is needed to bring on a new Global Moderator. These discussions like the ones for JM's are confidential.
