There was a burst of warmth from within as Shea and Forrest entered. Behind them came Gowan, stamping snow off his shoes and puffing out steamy breath, which lingered only a moment before dissipating.

The carpeted entry hall was narrow and had low ceilings. There were two lanes that servants traveled up and down, but other than that there was very little wiggle room. The upside to this, Shea knew, was that the heat dispersed more slowly. She'd seen many hallways like this in the other Keeps; it seemed to be an architectural must up here.

The hall split into two more hallways, down the left of which Constance and Arianna guided the group. Torches were high on the walls, lighting them well but burning soot onto the ceiling. The hall wound left and right until they came to a windowless dining room with a table just large enough to accommodate a party their size--not nearly as grandiose as the Ashes'. Venr Ash had wanted to make a statement when he built that Keep. The Barrasters were more conscious with their conservation of heat and stone, it was quite clear. That said, they did not allow the walls and floors to go unadorned. Mythical and historical scenes played out in stylized relief, threaded throughout with runic verse in Nortung. At the end of the room behind the table head was a roaring fire.

"Sit wherever you like," Constance said cheerily, beckoning them all inside.

"You will sit beside Reputation Ennen and myself," Gowan muttered to Lia and Rana. "And you'll eat what they serve and like it."

(gosh I forgot the hit of dopamine that comes with a notification from this RP xD)
(I know it was my go and I was the hold up, to be clear, but it's nice being back to it is what I mean)

Rana felt trapped and anxious, like the walls were closing in around her. Why were the ceilings so low? The hall so narrow? It felt like they were burying themselves in a cave with no exit. She had an inexplicable urge to bolt and run back outside, but instead, she gave a tight nod and sat down, forcing Lia to take the spot between herself and their father.

"Yes, Father!" Lia said, forcing a half-hearted smile and sitting down. She also felt a little uneasy with how constricted this space felt, but she wasn't quite sure what to make of the feeling or fully where it was coming from. Just that her chest felt a little tight. And now she was anxious that they were going to be fed terrible food. What had Father meant by that? Would they be served worms? She'd heard of savages eating worms. Hopefully the nobles up here didn't have to eat them, too. She really didn't want to eat worms. Especially not frozen ones.

Servants entered one by one and laid food out on the table. Hot glögg was brought out in a pitcher and offered to each of the guests in turn, as well as coffee and tea for those who didn't drink alcohol.

The food consisted of cubed potatoes; oatmeal herring; various greens; lichen bread; white rolls with honey, butter, and jam; and tripe. Arianna helped herself to lichen bread and herring as well as a mug of coffee.

Shea surveyed the options and eagerly chose the potatoes and herring, along with a helping of vegetables. Forrest did the same.
Gowan took a bit of everything with the exception of the tripe.

"May I ask," Constance said as she buttered her lichen bread, "what you young ladies are studying right now? I know the schools in the East are magnificent--our son Ewan spent two years there when he was younger.

Lia and Rana both carefully watched their father and emulated his plate, though they both took much smaller portions of the weird green... bread? It looked moldy, but clearly everyone else seemed to think it was fine.

Lia had been hesitating to eat, but upon realizing she was nearly about to be forced to engage, directly -- terrifying -- she quickly shoveled potatoes into her mouth and looked to Rana to reply to Lady Constance.

Rana wasn't surprised by the response, or, she supposed, lack thereof. She smiled politely as she replied on behalf of both of them, "We've got a fair spread of topics, depending on interests. We've got the privilege of a more individualized education than many people are able to receive. So my education focuses fairly heavily on languages and writing, as that's my interest, although of course I also study the usuals -- math, science, history, and such. Lia's mostly focused on the core subjects so far but is starting to develop an interest in art so she's been learning a bit about theory and art history in addition to her base education. What did your son study?"

Lia blushed and nodded, carefully avoiding eye contact.

"He studied law, specifically the development of lawmaking systems in Orthos," Constance replied. "He's something of a historian--an avid scholar of Orthos specifically, but he enjoys all things archaic."

"Such studies are very helpful for a future Lord," Arianna added. Especially one whose parents were currently in wartime and had not had the same rigorous education. Ewan had already pulled out several legal strategies that could help them build a case against Lord Tarr's warmongering. "Matters of law are quite important up here; most disputes are resolved through court cases."

"And the occasional war, it would seem." Shea took a slice of herring on her knife and ate it.

(ooh nice!)

Rana nodded politely, taking a sip of her drink. She wasn't going to touch that one with a ten-foot pole. "Did he enjoy his time in the East?"

Constance looked up as the door to the dining room opened. "You'll have to ask him. Good morning, gents!"
Arianna looked to her left and saw her son entering with Maxwell, his father.

"Ask me what?" Ewan was wrapped in a warm bearskin dressing gown and a fur shawl was draped about his shoulders. He was a tall, very heavyset young man of eighteen with curly black hair and twinkling dark eyes. An unruly beard and mustache sprouted from his face; it was clear he'd only just woken up.

Maxwell, who had sired him, was of average height and broad-chested, with light brown hair just beginning to gray at the temples. He'd taken the time to braid his beard before coming downstairs. There was an evenness in his disposition and the way he carried himself; he was observant and generally good-humored.

"Ah, there are my boys!" Constance beckoned Ewan and Maxwell over. "Reputations, you remember my son Ewan and his father, Maxwell Eden."

"Of course." Shea rose with some effort and shook both their hands. She had a mild dislike for Maxwell--not a personal matter, simply conflicting personalities. She found him exceedingly boring.

"We were telling young Rana and Lia Gowan here that you'd been to the East to study law," Constance explained. "Rana asked if you enjoyed your time in the East."

"Of course!" Seeing there was nowhere to sit, Ewan leaned himself against the wall, crossing one leg over the other. "It's much different from here, of course--the buildings are fantastic to behold with all the gilding and filigree. And your people have some of the best educational institutions in the known world. I have a deep, deep admiration for them."

Rana smiled and inclined her head, feeling oddly bashful. She wasn't sure why. "I'm glad to hear that. Where did you attend?"

"Myneram University," he responded, returning the smile. "Which is mostly known for its advancements in astronomy, I know, but the legal curriculum there was surprisingly robust. Are you currently a university student, Miss Rana?"

(Typically one would spend 4 years at the university, from 16 to 20, but Ewan only had two years because he's got duties here)

(sounds good, thanks!)

"Um..." Rana hesitated, blushing a little. She felt childish to have to admit she wasn't. "No, not quite. I plan to enroll next academic year, though."

"Any universities that you have in mind? What areas of study will you be focusing on?"

"Have some breakfast, dear," Arianna said mildly, and Ewan dipped his head a bit sheepishly, approaching the breakfast table.

“I quite enjoy languages and literature, so likely something related to those.” She felt guilty taking a seat when he didn’t have one; should she offer him hers? Or would that be more insulting?

"Ah, languages!" Ewan's huge eyebrow shot up as he added some of everything to his plate. "That's fascinating! I never good get a very good handle on anything beyond Orthoan and Essian...do you have a specialty? Any aspect of language you most enjoy?"
