The creature turned, and a powerful tail swung around to curl behind it. It was a troll, not nearly as big as the first one Ky had seen but still very large, with wild gray hair and a face the color and texture of pine wood. It had small, beady black eyes and smile lines, as well as a large, shovel-like nose. It wore fur-lined clothes much like a human would, but its feet were bare. It stared down at Ky, blinking slowly.

The horse tripped and stumbled forward, snorting and tossing his head. Ky screamed again, terrified. Monsters behind; monsters ahead? Where did that leave her?

Ky squeaked, not sure what to say. Would it be offensive if she said yes? It’d clearly be a lie if she said no. She needed to trust what he said— that he didn’t want to hurt her. She just needed to be sure she didn’t give him a reason to. “S-sorry… w-who are you?”
