It took her a little to find his foot prints past the shoveled snow, since she’d originally checked going towards the grove. But she figured it out and furrowed her brow, stomach clenching with anxiety. She quickly followed him out, tearing up when she realized he wasn’t in sight. She quickly followed his footsteps.

His teeth were chattering now; he could feel his joints aching, and his legs were unwilling to move. He made them keep going, though. Just a little further and then he could lie down.

She was tearing up, which stung her eyes with the cold air chilling them immediately. She reached into her pocket and realized she still had her pen knife. She quickly pulled it out and dug the tip into her thumb until there was a beadlet of blood, then she smeared it across her forehead and murmured under her breath, “Haelar I’m sorry I don’t have fire but please make him be okay. Tomhas. My father. Protect him. Please. Please. I beg. Please.” She smeared more blood on her forehead for good measure and mixed in some tears in place of ashes.

Tomhas reached a part of the thicket where he believed he was a satisfactory distance from the Keep. He'd been walking at a mostly steady pace for about an hour at this point, and his beard had ice crystals on it. He slumped down on his knees in the snow, then let himself lie on his stomach. He closed his eyes and turned his head to the side, letting the snow fall over him.

Ky was on the brink of a complete meltdown. She was trying her damndest to keep it together. To find any scrap of Kyber that still existed and channel him. For Tomhas. This wasn’t a fucking walk; not this long. They were both missing dinner by this point. He was doing something stupid. She was sure of it. She rushed onward, stumbling and falling a couple times. Her body was getting numb.

She stumbled onward, knocking the scab off her thumb to smear more blood on her face as she prayed for safety. But she couldn’t hear or feel anything but the howling of the bitter wind against her and the the way the snowflakes felt like little razors against her face.

Tomhas was beginning to drift off to sleep. He wondered if he'd wake up and get the option to be a ghost. He'd probably say no.

Her heart lurched, then fell into her stomach and died entirely when she saw him laying ahead of her, already partially covered in snow. “Tomhas!” She ran towards him, falling over and scrambling forward on her hands and feet as she rushed to him and rolled him over.

Tomhas didn't stir; his face was dark with frostbite and his breath was coming out shallowly.

“Tomhas!” She screeched, terrified. Her worst nightmare was coming true. Not one but two fathers killing themselves because of her. She shrugged off her coat and wrapped it around him, since it was already pre-warmed with her body heat. Then she searched around and found his and wrapped it around him, too. She hugged him close, trying to transfer as much of her body heat into him as she could; sobbing. “Wake up. Father. Papa. Wake up.”

His eyelids fluttered, ice crusting over his lashes. "Ky?" Rönn's deep voice sounded behind her. "What happening? You too far out--" He cut himself off as he saw Tomhas.

She turned towards him, still hugging Tomhas close, and tried to explain. But before she even got a single word out she started sobbing so hard she coughed, mucus draining down her face and throat and mixing with the tears. Thank gods he was here. “Fire?” She didn’t know what else to do.
