“No you’re not.” She sighed. “I’m just ungrateful and awkward.”

"I am. I'm a terrible father and a terrible husband and a terrible person."

“No you’re not,” she argued again. “Why would you say that?” Sure he’d been shitty to Lyra but that had nothing to do with Anneke.

"Anneke...." Tomhas closed his eyes, taking a shuddering breath. "People don't understand...she doesn't understand. But I should know better than to...I took..." He whimpered, pressing his face into the pillow. "I made vows and I broke them and I know I shouldn't have..."

(That's rad though)

Tomhas buried his face further into the pillow. "I've broken my vows," he mumbled.

She was quiet for a long moment, trying to work it out. What vows? They were still married. In sickness and in health. For richer or poorer. For better or worse. “… What vows?” She felt sick as a thought hit her, making her panic. “…You’re divorcing her?” Gods. Was she going to end up in the middle of a custody battle? Gods.

"No!" His head shot up. "Gods, no. But I should. She should divorce me. For what I did. But I couldn't--" His face was streaked with tears. "I couldn't help--I need to."

“…what did you do?” Maybe if she asked directly she would understand.

Tomhas rubbed at his face. "I don't--I don't want to..." He sighed heavily. "Gods...I betrayed her, Ky."

(It’s painful how dense she’s being)

“…you lied to her?” She felt like she was missing something obvious but couldn’t figure out what.

Every time I’ve gotten feedback that was hard to take it was usually hard to take because there was truth in it and I didn’t like that (or didn’t want to receive it). That’s not to say all harsh feedback is good or that we should be harsh for harshness’ sake, but learning to absorb truth without letting it break your inner core/break you is a lifelong skill that keeps your mind elastic and open to learning.
