That felt like a rhetorical question but Ky shook her head anyway. No. No she didn’t want to tell her any of this. How could she? She couldn’t.

"I'd appreciate it if you did, so I know how we should move forward."

Ky rubbed her arm, shoulders rounded, and glanced away. “You can’t tell them. Either of them. It’s fine; I overreacted.”

“…someone came in my room,” she admitted, glancing at her and then away quickly. “I don’t know who it was… but he knew I have a rune and was angry about it. Wanting me to give it to him… I don’t know if he’s still in my room or not. I ran… accidentally woke up Lyra when I was yelling at him.”

"Someone--a spirit, you mean? What did he look like, Ky?"

“He stayed in the shadows.” She shook her head, blinking rapidly as she remembered the way he’d lunged for her. What if she’d taken off her rune before bed? What if it’d broken in her sleep? “I don’t know.”

She needed to be careful. Needed to be sure Sera didn’t recognize Michael. She took a deep breath. “He had a really high voice,” she lied. “And… he dug through all of my stuff. I pretended to be asleep but then I accidentally flinched and he demanded I give him my charm and said he knew I had one.”

She hesitated. "Who would have told him that? Did you tell someone?"

“No.” She shook her head, eyes dribbling tears. “I didn’t tell anyone I promise.”

"I believe you." She nodded and rose. "Let's you and me have some tea, alright? Let's think about this."

Ky nodded. She didn’t want tea and she didn’t want to think about this. But she’d learned well by now that refusing tea from these Northerners was a near impossible task, no matter how little you wanted it. May as well just let it happen. Pretend to calm down so Sera would let her go. If she forced it, she risked Sera telling Gaius or Tomhas. That was a risk anyhow. Best not increase it.

Sera exited and headed to the infirmary. She opened the door. "Can you think of any way he'd have heard about the bone?"

Ky followed and shook her head. “I mean… unless people we’re talking about it.” Or fucking Septimus. Goddamn that bastard.

So, please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookcase on the wall.
