"Yessir." Kieran dipped his head and walked toward his bunk.

Jerica didn't understand why they were getting exiled to the village. Nor did she understand why Derik was being so vague and unwilling to answer her questions, especially now that they were alone.
But it was pissing her off.
So she waited until he fell asleep, then snuck down to the tavern.
She'd been watching the outside world through the window for most of the afternoon to get a feel for how many layers the locals wore, to be sure she didn't mark herself as a foreigner right away by bundling up too much and looking weak. So she did her best to blend in and strode through the doors confidently, glancing around.

The tavern was quite full. At the center a bard was tapping out music on a weathered drum, and several women with green arm bands were sitting beside patrons, talking to them. Two patrons sat off to the side with their tankards of ale, watching the merriment. They were a giant man with flaming red hair and an older woman with graying hair and a morose expression. They murmured to each other occasionally.

The bartender was a grizzle-bearded northerner with one blue eye and one empty socket. He grinned at her as she approached. "Evening, missy. What can I get for you?"
