"She seems like a good mom. Tomhas loves her a lot."

Ky's throat constricted and she looked away. Way to rub salt in the wound. Remind Ky of what a wonderful mother she was being denied.

He wasn't trying to do that. She knew he wasn't. But. Well. He still was, whether he meant to be or not.

Fifteen years without a mother.

Then having one for all of thirty seconds before her life went back to shit.

And now where were they?

Two weeks away, that's where. Motherless, again.

He glanced at her uncomfortably. "Sorry. I know you miss her too."

She swallowed past the lump in her throat, frowning as she shrugged. "It's whatever."

He was silent as they finally got down to the first floor.

Ky let the silence hang for a few moments, too down in the dumps to even be anxious about the silence. Who even cared at this point? Not her, that's for sure. She didn't care about anything.

... Except.

"... so this it, then?" Ky said as they walked. "A lap around this floor then I can go?"

"Yeah. You might want to go check on Tomhas after this, right?"

Ky hesitated, frowning at him as her conscience said yes while her brain said no. It was an odd spot to be in. "...Why?"

He shrugged. "We talked about it up on floor 3. I just figured you didn't get much time with him."

Ky bristled. That didn't make her feel even a little bit better about things. The reminder that she was being a pissy asshole and squandering the little time she had with her father, after he'd almost died in an effort to come see her. She was being a bitch. She was always a bitch. But the guilt of it this time was almost too much to bear. "I'm going home."

"For sure. I just mean, you know, since he and Gaius got all bitchy early."

"Nope. I guess they both have good reason to be angry with one another."

"Oh?" She looked over at him curiously. The only reason Tomhas had to be angry with Gaius was that Gaius was angry with him... right? What else had he done?

"You know, Gaius getting his leg chopped off and whatnot. Tomhas would be pissed about something so rash, right?"
