"But he has a right to know, doesn't he?"

“Why?” She asked, resting her chin on her knees and staring at the wall ahead of her. Maybe she didn’t like having parents after all. At least not aunts and uncles anyway. “I’m here to be safe. I’m safe.”

"You're safe, but you're not happy, right?" Sara leaned back. "I know this isn't the same, but if a friend asked you to watch their bird for them and the bird stopped eating, wouldn't fly, wouldn't sing, you'd tell your friend, right?"

Ky knew what she was doing; and she didn’t like that she had a point. “… my friend would take the bird home.”

"What if your friend was far away and couldn't get to the bird? Let's say they're sick, recovering from broken legs. Or they're worried the bird will be harmed on the journey home. They'd give you instructions on how to care for the bird, right? They'd offer advice. But Gaius hoped for your sake that he would let me take you home rather than come here himself. None of us could have predicted him doing what he did."

“He…” Ky sighed. This was Gaius’s fault. Even if she couldn’t figure out how to articulate how.

“I told him I wanted to come home. In a way that didn’t upset him,” she said. “Gaius could have figured out a way, too. But he didn’t.”

"I imagine he was hoping it would show Tomhas that you weren't just homesick and it wasn't something you'd just get over."

“Well… he succeeded, apparently,” she said stiffly. Tomhas successfully manipulated. Good job Gaius.

"Not in the way he wanted," she pointed out. "Again, nobody wanted or expected this outcome."

Ky nodded sourly. “That doesn’t change it.”

She regretted running into Sara. She should have stayed in the parlor until she calmed down. She wanted nothing to do with any of the Ashes at this point. And yet she was going to have to tolerate them for the next year. And so a good enough job of faking that she liked them that they didn’t beg her father to kill himself. Again.

(I would never want Tomhas to lol himself)

"I'm sorry, Ky," she said quietly. "I know this isn't what you wanted. Gaius and I will try to talk him into bringing you home."
