Ky tried for a ‘yes’m’ but it came out a squeak. She nodded weakly and settled back against the pillows. That was disappointing. She wanted to curl up and die, not sit up. And certainly not consume anything else. That’s what had gotten her into this mess in the first place.

Tadaaki was quiet for a moment, racking his brain to try to remember more of the past week, but he couldn’t. Gods. Had he taken his eyes off her long enough for her to eat something bad for her? Was this his fault? “…I… I don’t think so. Ma’am.”
The more he thought about it, the surer he got. If she’d found something she thought was edible she would have forced him to eat it — she wouldn’t have kept it for herself sneakily. And he was certain he hadn’t had anything to eat.

Ky was trembling badly, too tired to be able to tilt her head to look at… at… the woman. “…Hot.” Not cold. She was very hot.

Ky nodded just as weakly. It took so much energy to sit up. To even breathe. Exist. She curled into her pillow, sliding down to a half-lying half-propped up position.

It would be generous to consider Aleth conscious. He was vaguely aware of what was going on, but he couldn’t have moved if he tried — which he didn’t — and he also made no effort to answer. The poppy was… helping… sort of. No. It was. It’d be much worse without it. But. This was still bad.
