Ky pushed the door open and hesitated in the doorway.

A very, very old man well into his eighties or early nineties was stooped under one of the dozens of perches in the rookery tower, fumbling with one of the water fountains. He was stick-thin, though not as thin as Gaius, and had no hair to speak of. He turned to face her and straightened, revealing one of his eyes to be covered by a patch. "Hullo, young missy! What can I do for you?" he asked.

"Hello!" She smiled and held up the letters. "Gaius asked me to bring these up here. They need to go to Tomhas and Anneke. Please."

He approached her with a surprisingly steady gait and took the letters, weighing them in his hands. "How urgent are we talking, dearie? Lots of letters headed that way already."

"Um..." she hesitated. "Fairly? Gaius wants to hear back from them before Sara takes a trip, which, um... will hopefully be soon?"

"Fastest bird can get there in four days," he replied. "Weather and gods willing. Kirri, hear love!" He clicked his tongue and rubbed his fingers together, and a massive raven swooped down from the very top of the tower to rest on his feces-covered sleeve. She settled there and clacked her beak. "Strips for Kirri?" she croaked, and the old man chuckled.

"Four?" Her eyebrows shot up. Two weeks her ass. They must be giving her the geriatric ravens. But she admired Kirri and looked at her for a long moment with a little smile. "Hello beautiful."

"Hello beautiful," Kirri replied as the old man fished some dried meat strips out of his apron and tossed them to her. "Fancy going to see Tomhas, girlie?" he asked, and Kirri ruffled her wings as she snapped the meat up. "She's a quick, reliable bird, miss; she'll get those letters to him right quick, make no mistake."

Ky smiled even more as Kirri echoed her. Being called pretty by a bird hadn't been on her radar of things she needed, but now that it'd happened, it definitely was.
She looked at the man as he addressed her and dipped her head. "I appreciate that."

He rolled the letters into neat little scrolls along with their envelopes and tied them to the bird's leg with green ribbons that matched the one permanently around her ankle, then headed for a set of stairs.

Ky followed after him a step behind, hoping he didn't tell her she had to leave. She wanted to watch.

He glanced over his shoulder. "You're a curious one, aren't you? What's your name, missy?" He pushed open a door into the windy outdoors.

"Oh, sorry," she hesitated, stopping mid-step and slowly lowering her foot back to the ground where she stood. "I didn't -- sorry, I didn't mean to be a pest. I'm, uh, Ky." She flashed a little nervous smile. "And you?"

"Ky?" His eyebrows shot up. "Oh, Tomhas's lass! I was wondering if I'd see you. How do you do?" He held out a wizened hand. "There are some who call me Tim."
