“Thank you.” Ky nodded to her with a smile. “It was nice to meet you.”

"You as well." She turned and strode off, and Gaius turned towards the door, glancing at Ky. "She's every inch a soldier," he said to her quietly. "An excellent warrior but stern as anything."

Ky nodded. That much was painfully clear. Ky was sure she was a lovely human who would help her learn an excellent fighting style. That it would be an overall positive experience. And yet Ky couldn’t seem to get past the fact that Kazrha basically embodied all the most terrifying parts of soldiers. And they’d already established how she felt about them. “I’m sure it serves her very well.”

Gaius opened the door and held it for her. "I think she would be good for you, but more importantly I'd like for you to be comfortable around your trainer. If she frightens you or anything like that, we'll find someone else."

“Thank you.” Ky nodded to him and stepped through, thinking of how to respond to his comment. She hesitated a moment, then, “I think I’d like to talk to all three before I decide.”

"A wise decision." Gaius headed towards another door on the same hallway. "Gisli is a formidable fighter as well, but he's something of a one-trick pony."

"He mostly uses the greatsword, which makes it difficult for beginners to fight with him."

“Oh,” Ky said, imagining him lumbering towards her a blade the size of the one he’d been using. She was pretty sure she wouldn’t be able stop his blows even if she managed to get her sword up in time; he’d probably still just plow her over with the force of his swing. “Yeah, that would be challenging no doubt.”

"I certainly wouldn't want to go up against him." Gaius came to the door and knocked. "Who's that?" came General Xander's thin voice. "Lord Ash." There was a pause, then Xander opened the door. He was tall and sallow-cheeked, with a neatly cared for mustache and cool blue eyes. "What can I do for you, sir?" "I hope you're not too busy; I was hoping you might be free to talk with Ky about what we discussed," Gaius replied. "Certainly." Xander held the door open. "Please come in, both of you."

They were agreed on that, at least. She didn’t want to go up against him, either.
Ky smiled and dipped her head to him, stepping inside and to the side, awkwardly waiting to be told what to do next

The office was smaller than Gaius's but still a fair size. There were two armchairs facing the desk and bookcases lining one of the walls, and a window looked out at the back area of the barracks. Xander came to stand in front of his desk, hands clasped over each other. "So, you're looking for a teacher for swordsmanship, I understand." He glanced at Gaius. "Lord Ash has spoken to me about potential candidates, myself being one of them. May I ask what you're looking for in a teacher?"

Ky was glad Gaius had asked her the same question so it didn’t take her completely off guard. But she still felt juvenile saying it directly to a potential teacher. Was she pathetic? Well, yes, of course she was. But did she want to reveal that to Xander so soon? May as well. He’d figure it out with minutes of training if he was the one who got stuck with her. “Um… I could use patience. I’ve only been training a few weeks, so I’m still terrible… but I try very hard.”

"We all started out terrible," General Xander said with a lip twitch that might generously be called a smile. "I can't promise conventional patience, but none of us that Lord Ash has picked out will get angry at you if you struggle or need a little extra help. Anything else?"

“No, sir.” Goddamn it. “… what do you look for in a student?”
