Why is there a dot?

Maybe it's supposed to look like an exclamation point with the heart replacing the line? I've never questioned that before, but now I'm really intrigued. >>

That's a good point, I always thought it looked like the top half of one of those giant rings you see in movies.

I thought it is blood that is coming out of the heart.

Heart Exclamation was approved as part of Unicode 1.1 in 1993 under the name “Heavy Heart Exclamation Mark Ornament” and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
