Sera held out her hand for the cup as he finished. "I daresay you look worse than before you drank it. What's the matter?"
"The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that." -Karis Nemik

"Nothing." He handed her the cup then bent down to pull his slippers off.

Sera raised an eyebrow. "Best to spit it out now before it worsens."

"I already told you," he grumbled. "I just stubbed them."

He pulled off his slipper. There was a spot of blood on the bandages covering his stubs. He cringed again. For as much blood as he drew from Ky and Tadaaki you'd think he'd be used to it, but seeing his own blood put a bitter taste in his mouth.

"Did Lord Ash say something distressing?" she pressed, moving off to set the cup by a wash basin.

Aleth blinked, genuinely surprised by the question. "Did you expect him to?"

"Lord Ash says what he wishes," she replied with a shrug. "He sometimes forgets people don't always take kindly to being bombarded with questions."

"Oh." Aleth shook his head, settling back into the pillows. "No. We were getting along swimmingly. I just got distracted and didn't take care with where I put my feet... won't be making that mistake again."

"I expect not." Sera gave his foot a cursory glance. "I should probably have offered you a cane. Would you like one?"

Aleth hesitated. His pride certainly didn't want one. But, he supposed it would make him look less threatening. And would give him the semblance of a weapon -- not that it'd be particularly efficient. But, most of all, it would give the appearance of Aleth taking Ash's suggestion. So, he inclined his head, "If you think that's best."

"I think for now it would do you good not to put too much weight on that foot. Wait one moment." She disappeared into her office and returned with a simple wooden cane, which had a simple crook at the top to serve as a handle. "See if this suits you."

(Gotta go to be now, goodnight!)

(Night!)

Aleth took it and stood back up, leaning his weight against the cane. It would be an adjustment to walk with for sure, but he could already feel it being easier to stand using it than before. He nodded. "This will do fine, thank you."

"Excellent. Glad that's settled, then. Is there anything else you need?"

"No, I think this is all," Aleth answered. "Thank you."

Generally speaking, a howling wilderness does not howl: it is the imagination of the traveler that does the howling.
