The 2016 Writing Olympics

Ten Events on Eleven Consecutive Days

Do you have what it takes to be a YWS Olympian?

What's going on?

Beginning August 5th and going through August 16th, the Young Writers Society will once again be hosting our very own Writing Olympics! Each day there will be a new event with events lasting only 24 hours. On the last two days, there will be an epic scavenger hunt calling for you to scour the deepest depths of YWS for answers!

Winners and Prizes

For each event, there will be a gold medal, a silver medal, and a bronze medal. Gold earns you 3 points, silver earns you two points, and bronze earns you a point. At the end of the Writing Olympics, these points get tallied up and the top three are announced. This means that it is definitely possible to never earn a gold medal but still finish first overall!

First place will win a choice of anything in the YWS store under $30 USD. Second place will win anything under $20 USD. Third place will own anything under $15 USD.

Teams!

You can also form and create your own teams. To start a team, simply create a topic in the Writing Olympics forum. Here's an example from the 2012 Writing Olympics:

A team can be open or closed -- it's completely up to you. At the end of the Writing Olympics, the points earned by the individual team members will be added up, and this will be used to determine the winning team (this will be decided by points per capita rather than overall points). The winning team will earn bragging rights for all!

Please note that is absolutely not necessary to join a team, and that teams exist mainly for moral support.

Hey there Igg. As a relatively new member, I'm somewhat unfamiliar with what kind of events you're talking about. Is that classified? Can I at the very least know what you're looking for in these events (writing, reviewing, trivia, etc.)?

@ellstar, there's going to be a schedule posted soon that will show you what events will be happening. They are all writing-based (minus the scavenger hunt) and will focus on prose, poetry, and even a little bit of storybooking! Each event thread will explain the event in detail, so that should help as well. But for some quick examples, there may be events like writing haikus, writing a six-sentence story, writing a vignette, etc. :)

Hope that helps!

@Poopsie - entering an event will depend on the host running the event. Some will want you to PM your entry to them, some will want you to post it in the thread, and some might do it entirely different. In each event thread, you'll see just how the host wants you to enter their event, so read carefully and follow their instructions. Hope that helps!

Hi me again. :D
Can we enter pieces that have already been written?

@felistia - that will depend entirely on the host of the event. Please ask them if it's okay or not before submitting. :)

What happens if there is no top three and there are just 10 people with 3 points from winning gold. What happens then?

When do we find out the winners for the individual contests? Thanks!

@felistia, I'll cross that bridge if/when I come to it ;)

@km1717, when the judges finish judging, they will post a thread with the results.

OK, can we change Writhlete to Authlete or something? Writhlete sounds like it's derived from writhe rather than write. Authlete is a pun on author (but if that's not obvious don't use it, although it's less awkward than writhelete).
