After while it gets you down, this game,
you no longer know what it was set you out to achieve
instead of exposing yourself to life
and doing something useful with your hands.

That's when you can't escape,
when pain is a figure tearing the fog
that shrouds you, striking away
the obstacles one by one, covering
the swiftly decreasing distance, now
so close you can make out nothing
but his mug wider than the sky.

1. wolves

We, the chosen twelve, whisper our howls
to the moon, pregnant and glaucous
but no longer ours to disturb.
The taste of dust burnt
on our tongues, nostalgia stuck
like ash in between our teeth;
we are rotten battleships
lurched on the stony shore, rough
and old and stubbled, silver shadows
slated to die in earthly prisons
as we forget how the stars smell.

2. shedding

I am stretched so thin (like the retreating
of a tide from a shore) that my skin slips
off in the bath, and I am eviscerated
imperceptibly (like an evaporating
puddle lingering in a gutter) until bits
of me float in the water, and I descend
into lawlessness.
By the taps the sinews
and bones that were once my hands
flick through the pages of the holy bible,
and underwater my lips blow bubbles
of scripture soundlessly (like muted
characters on a television screen).

I dissipate into the steaming
water (the bible splits into books into
chapters into verses into lines into letters
into serifs into atoms) and hope whatever
rises from the depths of the porcelain
is a strong swimmer (like a fibrous
whale with unshatterable faith in the
glory of the sea).

3. the things I no longer get to enjoy

Fresh paint spring grass,
demarcating.

New net hard court,
invigorating.

Cold cider icy glass,
masticating.

Summer haze warm days,
conjugating.

Extra gin old friends,
desecrating.

Leg pain no sleep
dead brain knee creak
forever waiting.

4. whitefish montana

My mother keeps a Stetson from Whitefish, Montana, locked
in her spare bedroom, at the bottom of the walk-in wardrobe
amongst the vintage dresses. She bought it from nobody in particular
and I am the only man in her life now, on holiday weekends, so
I figure it's mine to try, but in front of the mirror before I put it on
I know it's not for my head, because my two week old beard might be
scratching at my chin but I am still playing grown-up at twenty-six,
but it's not mine, it never was, and my father is a no good son of a
bitch who doesn't deserve a fine hat like this and never will. The Stetson
goes back in the closet, and I remember that sometimes it's better
to leave things shut than release them into the world before they're good and ready.

5. if it wasn't for the birds singing on the barren trees

Coiled like a rattlesnake
we wait like fools on the precipice;
walking in the shadows of winter
hoping for it to spring and bite
and poison us with hope.

Patience is the strength of the weak, impatience is the weakness of the strong.
