“We’re in high school now! I’m excited! But I kind of miss Iron Horse still though, it was more of a home and cozier…Now we don’t know where to go or anything…But still…”. I said as we walked along the trail.

We both loved the trail that ran through the Leigh Valley, connecting three neighboring towns. It was early evening; the sun was setting over the hills that rose before us in the distance and the silhouettes of the palm trees and weeping willows lined the narrow paved path. We walked at a calm pace and inhaling the calm, listening to the barely audible whispers of the leaves as the wind swayed them to and fro. Everything was okay back then, everything had its place, our lives were balanced between school and school sports, and we were content to a degree. No, it wasn’t perfect, but it was satisfactory, we discussed this as we walked farther and farther towards the setting sun among the hills.

--“What classes do you have tomorrow?” I asked without turning my head away from the sight of the sun setting.
--“Oceanography, Math, and Spanish…God, I hate Spanish! But my teacher’s okay I guess, he’s funny…” Answered Jen after taking a moment to remember what classes she had the next day.

It was her second year taking Spanish 1 and she wasn’t too excited about it. We didn’t have any of the same classes first semester which was pretty disappointing, we could’ve at least had English History or PE together, but not even that. I should add that in the same class we probably cause more trouble than any other person. Maybe it was a good thing we didn’t have classes, I don’t know…

--“Let’s turn around, it’s getting kind of cold, and I don’t have a sweatshirt, besides, we wanted to watch that movie at your house, remember?” I said, gesturing for us to turn around.
--“Okay, but lets walk down there…” said Jen pointing towards the lower path outside the fenced tunnel that surrounded the main trail. The trail ran through a golf course and the fence prevented the golf balls from flying into the people casually strolling by. The lower path wasn’t surrounded by a mesh tunnel and unlike the main trail was a one made of dirt instead of concrete; just for that quality we liked it better.

--“Hey, look! It’s one of those sewer lids, and it’s only covering the hole half way, let’s go look!” I yelped excitedly letting my adventurous nature take over.
--“That’s kind of creepy…Let’s just go, okay?” Said Jen nervously, looking into the dark opening peeking out from under the sewer lid.

Jen had a cautious nature and was my complete opposite, I guess what they say about opposites attracting is true. Our energies balanced each other out. Her calm spirit tamed my wild one and together they existed in harmony.

--“No, wait, get back here! Let’s throw rocks in there! I bet there’s like a hobo living in these sewer tunnels…” I said laughing as I threw a stone and heard it hit the water with a dull splash.

........continued........

I threw more rocks into the shadowed opening and was delighted at the sound of water splashing below the ground. Jen even threw a few but didn’t overindulge in this activity and just stood by watching me.

--“Stop it!” A barking voice came from inside the darkness leading into the sewer tunnels.

I dropped the rock I was holding on the ready to throw and ran blindly, screaming, in the direction of home. All time for me stopped and fear overpowered my senses making me deaf to all sound for those abrupt moments. I ran without turning and when I finally did, feeling as though I were a safe distance away from all danger, I saw Jen running after me, stumbling in her flip-flops and yelling for me to stop.

--“You just like left me there and ran away, and I’m not wearing sneakers so I can’t even run and you like desert me!” Said Jen between gasps for air as her body adjusted after running so fast.
--“Sorry, it’s just that I got scared and when something scares me I run, I wouldn’t leave you behind, don’t worry…That was freaking scary though! You heard it, right?” I said still trying to process what happened back at the sewer lid.
--“No, I didn’t hear anything, what was it?” she asked, obviously interested in my side of the story.
--“The guy! There was a guy in the sewer, and he told me to stop throwing rocks at him, he like barked it at me. It was so freaking scary!” I said with determination to make her feel what I felt back there.
--“You’re joking; I’m not falling for this again…nope.” Jen said with a smirk on her face as she started walking on.
--“No, I swear! This time I’m serious…there was a guy in the sewer!” I said desperate for her to believe me.

I was known to take advantage of how gullible some people were. And Jen was as gullible as it gets. Maybe not quite as bad as it gets, but definitely on the right track. She knew this and every once in a while would decide not to believe what I said, especially something as unusual as a man in a sewer yelling for me to stop chucking rocks at him. But in this case I had to prove to her that I was completely serious, even if my story was a little hard to believe.
