I think it is a really good start! He definitely has a chance at it! Just keep him practicing and maybe even try mimicking some already-made characters? Good luck!

Just a suggestion, but how about you call him to join this place himself? From what I saw, he's not only on a pretty good path with the drawings, but the stories accompanying them as well! He could post his works, both drawn and written, here as he makes them, and get some constructive feedback on it too =)
