April 1st
Won’t you play with me?
So I can rip off your wretched wings and chain you to the ground?
Dance with me?
So I can extricate your soul and leave you an empty shell?
Care for me?
So I can feed you to the monsters when you love me the most?
Won’t you?

April 4th

It' not whistling,
Or whispering,
Or singing songs of days long past.
It's just the wind.

(Whew, four days since I wrote the last one. How embarrassing!)

Computer
Maybe one day I could escape the screen
(The document titled “Life” already exists. Would you like to replace it?)
And laugh and write and think and dream,
(Fragment, consider revising)
But I’ll never be good enough,
Never,
Ever
(Installing update 1,247 of 2,683)
So I’ll just sit right here, and wonder forever.

Feet

Oh, wonderful appendages of mine,
Liberated from thy worn woolen cage
Swaddled in socks of brightly colored cotton,
Acquired from Delia's.
My eyes feast on the
perfect proportions, the delicate arch from heel to pad,
The bone structure so exquisite,
so exotic, so-
Hmm, I should really clip my toenails.

Moss grows on the bricks
Tree roots push against pavement
Silent rebellion.

They hate each other,
But they clink glasses and smile,
Smile for the children
Smile for the world.

Apple Picking

A sacred fruit,
Plush, lush and tempting,
Unlock the treasures
With green paper keys.

So wonderfully juicy,
Red, round and luscious, but
Please wait ‘till purchase
To eat the apples, please.

I am told to be myself,
I am told to follow my own path.
“Be your own person!” and, “Don’t be afraid to be you!”
Yet somehow I find myself bending to their will,
Striving to please without knowing why.
I tell myself that I am unique,
Special,
Different,
But in the end they always win.

Every once in a while, I look out my window.
I peer at the people
With gusty grey coats and big bursting backpacks,
Tip-tapping on teeny-tiny phones.
I see them, but they do not see me,
I am alone in my wondrous window world.
Headbands, hats and headphones,
Generic, guarded, gauche,
Deceptively different, yet all slipping down the same street.
Every once in a while, I look out my window.

Make sure you marry someone who laughs at the same things you do.
